At the end of October, representatives from more than 190 countries will come together in Colombia at COP16. The first UN biodiversity summit since the creation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15 in Montreal in 2022, it will be a key moment on the journey to translating this plan into national action. With that in mind, the Autumn issue of The Environment magazine explores some of the ways in which the water and environmental sector is working with and for nature. We take a look at overcoming the barriers to implementing large-scale nature-based solutions (NBS) to flood and coastal erosion risk management, speak to experts on paludiculture (farming on wetted peatland soil) and take a look at dam removals happening across Europe. We also explore the environmental aspirations for Sir Keir Starmer’s first year in power and discuss how nature recovery and resilience should play into the government’s growth agenda. We’ve got all the usual member news too, keeping you up-to-date on goings on at CIWEM and inspiring you to get more involved in the community! Just caught up with this podcast from The ENDS Report 'Highways from Hell'. The brilliant, straight-talking Jo Bradley Stormwater Shepherds discusses toxic road run-off, a big pollution source that's largely going un-monitored and un-managed. I was at Westminster Forum Projects Conference on water pollution last week: good to hear Helen Wakeham Director of Water Environment Agency call for the transport sector to put 'more effort' into monitoring and tackling pollution from highway outfalls. ➡ 📑 Read more in our joint report 'Highway run-off and the Water Environment' CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) & Stormwater Shepherds: https://lnkd.in/gW7SsQBN https://lnkd.in/erWB883P

It's great to see the second article in our "Breaking Silos" series published. In this release, Meredith Hanson and Marcus Rodin do a great job of highlighting the importance of cross-discipline collaboration to enabling climate resilience. They focus on a number of themes and calls-to-action including knowledge gaps, the need for overdesign(?), the use of nature-based solutions, the need to invest in developing economies, and the shared responsibility we all have to take individual action to increase our resilience to climate change. Well worth a read! #BreakingSilos #climateresilience CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Aimee Jones

CIWEM's Catherine Moncrieff took part in a panel yesterday at a conference on the next steps for tackling water pollution in England, run by the Westminster Energy, Environment & Transport Forum. During the panel, she said that it will be important for the upcoming Government review of water to not just be a Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs review, but to be independent and work across sectors. She also called for a system of ambitious catchment management to fundamentally tackle water quality issues. She added: “It's important that, whatever structure comes about, it is outcomes driven – so working towards water targets at a catchment scale that [then] contribute to higher level national targets. “There must be clear accountability for the delivery of these targets, underpinned by appropriate duties to cooperate.” Read more about the conference here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eqtstbqZ Westminster Forum Projects
