COPE reposted this
I’m giving a talk at the APAME conference at the end of this month, comparing the 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 to the 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻. Research isn’t (or shouldn’t be) a “mass produced containerised commodity”. Still, the supply chain is a useful metaphor to think of the way that research is conducted and disseminated. It can help us identify the location of problems, and opportunities for cooperation and training. I experienced this first-hand. Some fifteen years ago I developed a training course for an Australian port about the supply chain. What I learnt is that although shipping lines, stevedores, and truck drivers all move the same containers, they have radically different incentives, and they really don’t understand each other. They blame each other for problems and inefficiencies, and none of them, in isolation, can solve the systematic flaws in the supply chain's broader incentive structure. Sound familiar? I think researchers and publishers may find it useful to reflect on their own place in the research supply chain, and how things may look different to others.

Global perspectives on making English-language publishing more accessible. COPE Members have responded to the editorial "Can we make English-language publishing more accessible?". They share their views on the challenges and potential solutions: • Prof. Dr Mingfang Lu (AiScholar): Increasing research output creates new pressures for authors writing in English as an additional language • Scott Wysong (Scribendi and Edanz): We must look again at peer review to address bias against authors with an additional language • Luz Becerra (Biteca): A Colombian perspective on the cycle of challenges • Spencer Moyes (Scribendi and Edanz): AI, professional editing, and educational reform can help close the gap • Dr Haseeb Irfanullah (Member, Advisory Cabinet of the Asian Council of Science Editors): Balancing accessibility with the business realities of scholarly publishing • Dr Chetan (University of Delhi): Challenges for Indian researchers getting published in high impact journal publication These viewpoints enrich the debate on making academic publishing more inclusive.
