Carefully considering social value has the potential to more than double the contribution the civil nuclear power sector delivers to the UK economy. In a new article first published by New Civil Engineer, our technical director for social value Caron Dunlop, outlines the potential of the development of small modular reactors (SMRs) nuclear power stations to extend these benefits even further, creating skilled job opportunities and social value in new regions. Caron said that learning from Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C shows it's clear that a robust social value strategy can lead to remarkable outcomes: 1,320 apprenticeships, support for 22,000 sustainable jobs, and a £24M investment in local education and skills. As we look ahead, SMRs present an opportunity to redefine the landscape of social value in energy investments. We are thrilled to announce that The City of Calgary has appointed us to redesign an 8km section of the Overhead Catenary System (OCS) and its associated #railway infrastructure between University Station and Crowfoot Station, situated along the Calgary C-Train’s Red Line (Northwest Line) 👏. Our team comprises notable partners, including Platinum Engineering and Tulloch Engineering. This section of the OCS supports the Calgary C-Train, a light rail #transit system serving thousands of passengers daily. The team’s main objective will be to improve the OCS performance (reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety) for Calgary Transit by reducing contact wire wear and the number of splices required across this section of line. Enhancing the OCS performance will lead to a more dependable and stress-free transit service for Calgary's residents 🚉. The project will also provide enhanced safety measures and #infrastructure reliability, contributing to a safer travel environment for commuters and transit staff. We’re connecting new #renewable projects at less than half the rate needed for the #energy transition in Australia. Paul Currie, energy lead for Asia Pacific, New Zealand and Australia contributed his thoughts on the challenge we’re facing and how we can overcome this in the latest Australian British Chamber of Commerce magazine. The article explores whether consumer energy resources (CER), such as rooftop solar, and collaborative delivery across supply chains could play a bigger role in the #EnergyTransition. CER present significant advantages over conventional large-scale power generation. They are not only swift to deploy but also strategically positioned near demand points, which diminishes the necessity for extensive network infrastructure. Plus, by using already developed land, CERs are less intrusive to local communities and biodiversity. On the other hand, forming genuine collaborative partnerships with supply chain partners through alliance contracting can enable us to speed up manufacturing and development processes. We're proud to be partnering with West Virginia American Water (WVAW) on a project to keep lead out of our drinking water by eliminating lead services lines to homes.💧 Through point of entry surveys conducted by our team members, and a web-based application where customers can self-report, WVAW is encouraging and enabling customers in West Virginia to look at and report their water service line materials. If lead is found, WVAW is replacing the pipes at no charge. “We feel like our contractors, Mott MacDonald, are doing a really excellent job working individually with our customers as they’re going door-to-door and providing excellent information,” said Megan Hannah, senior manager of government and external affairs at West Virginia American Water. How do you ensure #bridge stability and prevent intense resonant oscillations caused by wind loading? #ThenNowTomorrow This was the challenge facing engineers following the dramatic failure of the Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge in the US in 1940. As consulting engineer to the proposed Forth Road Bridge our founder David Anderson investigated solutions to this problem using state of the art aerodynamic modelling leading to new design features. 🎂 The new crossing opened on 4 September 1964 and this year, we're proud to celebrate its 60th birthday. When it opened, the Forth Road Bridge was at the forefront of state of the art #BridgeDesign and construction. Its 1,006m central span was the first time that any bridge outside the US had exceeded 1km. 🌉 Its two soaring 150m steel towers support the main cables made up of 11,618 steel wires, transferring the bridge loads into piers founded on Mackintosh Rock in the Firth of Forth, and into huge 56m-long concrete filled anchorage #tunnels at either end of the bridge. Anderson’s work on the bridge actually began with a report in 1926. This became a foundation of our ongoing innovation. Decades later, our specialists continue to drive the evolution of #BridgeEngineering and provide essential support to ensure #heritage structures benefit society long into the future.
