It doesn't add up. More than half of the world's 25 most climate-vulnerable countries are affected by fragility or conflict, but they receive just 1% of the climate finance that flows to more stable areas. At the UN Summit for the Future earlier this week, ODI Global Risks and Resilience gathered partners to spotlight the need to re-imagine risks in complex contexts. This new animation sets out how we can build long-term resilience in fragile and conflict-affected countries. 🔎 #SummitOfTheFuture #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateFinance #Fragile States

Many congratulations to our inspirational trustee Rachel Kyte, who has been appointed by the Labour Party (UK) as climate envoy to lead the UK’s return to high-level environmental diplomacy! 👏 Rachel will undoubtedly bring much needed energy, urgency and experience to this role, and help put the UK at the centre of global efforts to tackle the climate and nature crises facing our planet. Best of luck, Rachel! #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateAction #ClimateDiplomacy

Can #SouthAfrica 🇿🇦 lead the way for a more equitable green trade agenda as it prepares to assume the #G20 presidency? This critical question took centre stage at our recent high-level webinar, hosted in collaboration with The Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, Trade Negotiations Investment Forum and the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea). Our panel, featuring Sara Pantuliano (Chair), Ambassador Amina Mohamed, Prof. Faizel Ismail, Fabio Veras Soares, Fernando Ribeiro and Jodie Keane, explored: ▪ Challenges and opportunities of greening production and trade ▪ Africa's vision for a just transition and the potential of #G20SouthAfrica's leadership ▪ T20 Brasil-#G20Brasil perspectives on trade and sustainability ▪ Principles for fairness and equity for developing nations ▪ The trade-climate-development nexus and its implications for COP29 Azerbaijan 📺 Watch the full recording: https://lnkd.in/euxQe46U #GreenTrade #JustTransition #Africa #COP29 #Sustainability #TradeandClimate #TradeandEnvironment #GreenSqueeze #G20Brazil

What a busy start to our second cohort's initiation retreat! Our leaders are embarking on their shared learning journey. A few highlights: 💡 Understanding how to adopt a 'growth mindset' and invest time in the 'learning zone’. 🧠 Recognising how motivations influence biases, and how to work with the brain to change habits. 🌟 Articulating their own leadership values and ethos. Here's the story of the week so far in photos. 📸

Russia's attempt to defer the UN Pact for the Future in New York last week garnered headlines – but one particularly heated area of negotiations has received less fanfare. Tense discussions over the links between climate change, conflict and security have split countries. Some worry that the "securitisation" of the climate agenda could justify responses which threaten countries' sovereignty and divert attention away from the primary drivers of conflict. Devex subscribers can read this new article featuring ODI Global Risks and Resilience's Mauricio Vazquez. #PactForTheFuture #SummitOfTheFuture #UNGA79 #ClimateSecurity

I'm so honoured and humbled to have been appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General an Independent Eminent Person for the 2025 #Peacebuilding Architecture Review, alongside inspirational politician Danilo Turk, economist Jayati Ghosh, climate advocate Joyce Mendez and diplomat Mohamed Edrees (here in New York without Mohamed). Commitments to #peace and #security and support for #peacebuilding form an important pillar of the #PactForTheFuture which has just been adopted at the #SummitOfTheFuture by the UN General Assembly. The Review will have to consider how turn those commitments into action, and hopefully help member states move past the inertia that has followed past reviews. https://lnkd.in/e2AyD9PY UN Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA)

🌍 Complexity is no longer an excuse for inaction Having spent the last few days in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, it’s clear that in a world where risks are becoming increasingly interconnected, we need to rethink how we manage them. The systems in place today often address one issue at a time, but this siloed approach isn’t enough to build resilience in the face of global challenges. In my latest blog, I explore how we can reimagine resilience through a holistic, risk-informed approach, leaning on insights from the United Nations Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction (GAR 2024). 🔍 Read the full article below to learn more about why bold action is needed to build a future that’s prepared for the complex threats we face.
