One of the biggest reasons arts and culture organisations fail in their equity and inclusion efforts? Lack of context. I live by the adage that content is king, but rather than examining the specific needs / challenges / obstacles within their business, many organisations are still continuing the absolutely terrible habit of setting inclusion targets based on external optics and current "hot topics" without thinking properly about what equity looks like in their space. 🎯 (This has also been made worse by institutional arts funders who have insisted on targets being set, without intelligently interrogating whether or not they're the right ones - a whole other conversation for another day...🙃) That's why it was such an enormous breath of fresh air to sit down with Gemma Johnson and Scott Morrison to hear about the work being done at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music to make their workforce more financially inclusive. 💷 Why financial inclusion? Because it was one of the biggest challenges faced by people locally, and local people are the most obvious talent pool to recruit from.
