The secondary goal of this study was to shed light on the extent to which tweets a!ected the interpreting practice, recruitment of interpreters, and the discourse about TVI in general. The thematic analysis of the tweets showed that the viewers generally criticized interpreters based on their delivery, use of voice, and word choices. Complementary interviews conducted with TV interpreters and one executive revealed that tweets were instrumentalized by executives and recruiters both in real time and during the recruitment process; in this way they became a quality instrument with which to evaluate TV interpreters' performance. The findings are discussed in the light of the literature on TVI and are used to advance both practical and theoretical implications for the practice of TVI.

Comparing the source and target texts, we examine the rendition of numbers under the COVID-19 working conditions. In an attempt to address this question, semi-structured interviews with the interpreters of the Presidential Debates are corroborated with corpus analysis. The findings seem to suggest that numbers were either omitted or misinterpreted to a large extent in an atmosphere different from face-to-face working conditions. In conclusion, the paper shows that the interpreters’ inability to assist each other exacerbated the error rate as the interpreters did not prioritize numbers over other components of interpreting.

Julia Donaldson’s award-winning book The Gruffalo was translated into Turkish twice within a short span of time due to the transfer of the publishing rights from one publishing house to another. Gruffalo, the title given to the book and the main character of the book, translated as Tostoraman in the first translation evolved into Yayazula with this change. It is against this background that the paper attempts to examine the sound related translating strategies of the same source text. By comparing the two translations with the source text and with each other, the paper attempts to reveal the strategies resorted to by the two translations/translators/publishing houses. The paper argues that Tostoraman creates the effect aimed to be created in the source culture through attaching more importance on the use of sounds, rhyme, alliteration and the fonts. It is hoped that the paper contributes to the retranslation studies in children’s literature by shedding light on the strategies, and effects of the different translations.
Employing Podcasts as a Learning Tool in Interpreter Training: A Case Study. In M.D. Rodrigues Melchor, I. Horvath& K. Ferguson (Eds.), The Role of Technology in Conference Interpreting New Trends in Translation Studies volume 31. (pp. 179-203). Peter Lang., 2020

This paper focuses on the integration of podcasts into conference interpreting training classes. To this end, a pilot study was undertaken in which twenty minutes of each class was dedicated to podcast-related activities, be it in the form of introducing or listening to podcasts or having quizzes related to podcasts assigned each week to the students. The purpose of the article is to showcase the advantages of integrating podcasts into classroom activities in an attempt to introduce lifelong learning habits to the students as an indispensable skill of the interpreter they aim to become. The author begins by situating podcasts within the interpreting competence and describes their place vis-à-vis other competences. This is followed by an explanation of how podcasts were employed in interpreter training during the pilot study, and finally by an assessment of the survey and focus group that were conducted with the students in an attempt to obtain their comments on how podcasts helped them to acquire interpreting competence.

Turkey, a receiver of Marshall plan funds, became part and parcel of the anti-communist block. One outcome of this Turkish-American partnership was the influence that a constellation of American and Turkish organizations ended up exerting on the nascent field of interpreting in Turkey during the the Cold War. Through open-ended interviews with the interpreters who became witnesses of the era and who interpreted for statesmen and others during the Cold War, the paper seeks to shed light on the way the Cold War impacted interpreting. By drawing on the term gatekeeping, coined by Kurt Lewin (1947) at the beginning of the Cold War era, it is suggested that the Cold War impacted the topics that were interpreted, the common language pairs, and interpreters' lexical choices. Thus, the Cold War not only paved the way for the birth of the interpreting profession but also itself became a gate through which the interpreting topics, languages, lexical choices, and even the interpreters-all of which were instruments of the regime-had to pass through.

Almost all of humanity hunkered down in their homes to sustain a living of no school, no friends, and no close contact. Within such an atmosphere, children living in different parts of the world came to share the same broad experience. Against this shared background, a book by Liane Schneider, “Conni macht Mut in Zeiten von Corona”, was penned in German. Subsequently, it was translated into Turkish under the title “Elif Korona Günlerinde Cesaret Veriyor”. Parallel to this, the award winning internationally acclaimed illustrator undertook the illustration of a different book on the coronavirus, “Coronavirus A Book for Children”, which was also translated into Turkish under the title “Koronavirüs Çocuklar için Koronavirüs Kitabı”. This descriptive study, comparing the target texts against the source texts, aims to reveal the translation strategies such as addition, omission, substitution and the reasons behind these strategies. The paper argues that the pandemic measures taken in the target culture and the image of the child aimed to be created through translation in the target culture play central roles in the translation of these two books.

Interpreting during the Cold War era in Turkey An exercise in gatekeeping, 2020

Turkey became part of the anti-communist bloc, and one outcome of this Turkish-American partnership was the influence that a constellation of American and Turkish organizations exerted on the nascent field of interpreting. Through open-ended interviews with selected interpreters, the article seeks to shed light on the way the Cold War impacted the practice of interpreting. By drawing on Lewin’s (1947) concept of gatekeeping, it is suggested that the US-led anti-communist campaign of the Cold War affected the topics that were interpreted, the common language pairs, and interpreters’ lexical choices. The Cold War, thus, became a “gate” through which the interpreted topics, languages, lexical choices, and even the interpreters – all of which were instruments of the regime – had to pass through.

Full-time interpreters serving on TV outlets in Turkey hold two roles: they serve both as editors... more Full-time interpreters serving on TV outlets in Turkey hold two roles: they serve both as editors for the world news desk and as simultaneous interpreters. Drawing on interviews made with editor/interpreters and editors-in-chief and corroborating these with real-life interpreting instances, this paper investigates the relationship between editing and interpreting. It is found that the editing task assumed by interpreters/journalists bears upon the lexical choices made in interpreting on television news channels in Turkey. It is therefore claimed that familiarization with the language of the news helps staff interpreters in making renditions that follow the institutional policies of the outlets they serve, thus informing the interpreting output. Drawing on the term transediting, coined by Karen Stetting (1989) to describe the role of journalists, it is asserted that the role of these editor/interpreters might be described as that of ‘intereditors.’ It is the contention of the paper that interediting might prove useful in describing the TV interpreting of staff interpreters in Turkey.

Çanakkale war has been marked and commemorated as one of the sig- nificant events in the official history. The Çanakkale victory was hailed because it restored the national honor tarnished by the losses of the Bal- kan Wars and provided inspiration for the far of Independence.' As far as the order of the republican calendar is concerned, the Çanakkale victory has become the only event commemorated despite having taken place before the far of Independence. While commemorations for the
Çanakkale War initially were held locally, later March 18 was promulgated as the Day of Martyrs. Furthermore, while other events preserved in the national calendar gradually lost their allure in the eyes of public, the Çanakkale War has maintained its appeal in the collective memory of Turkey. Two main reasons comb to the fore to explain why the Gallipoli victory attained a special status among che other events on the republican ceremonial calendar. First, it is evident that the ongoing appeal has to do with the magnitude of carnage that the war inflicted on the fighters of both sides, which left unforgettable traces in the collective memory. Second, what the war represented provided politicians with a wide range of possibilities for instrumentalization of the victory for political purposes. While some lauded the war as the last victory accomplished by the Ottomans against the Western powers and thus as a harbinger of Islamist revival, others saluted it for making a national hero of Mustafa Kemal, who would lead the War of Independence and be the founder of the new Republic. These political perspectives are reflected in a variety of commemorations for the Çanakkale War. They now run the gamut of
ceremonies, from pilgrimages to religious solemnities organized by vari- ous groups. This chapter highlights milestones of the ongoing evolution of commemorative discourses formed around the Çanakkale War. It also sheds light on how different political actors instrumentalized commemo- rations for their own political purposes and otters explanations as to why commemorative discourses were changed. Different parties and political groups were continuously involved in the formulation and reformulation of their own narratives and strove to make them part of the official discourse.

In this vein, this article draws on gatekeeping, which is a term widely used in media studies. The article investigates gatekeeping in TV interpreting in Turkey, drawing on a larger empirical study. TV interpreting has recently come to be recognised as notably different from conference interpreting. One of the outcomes of the institutionalization of the practices involved in interpreting on TV in Turkey is that a gatekeeping process has become commonplace. It is hypothesised that lexical transformations are indicative of gatekeeping in TV interpreting performed in Turkey. This hypothesis will be tested on the basis of an analysis of official guidelines, self-narratives of the interpreters and actual cases of interpreters themselves rendering the terms denoting " Iraqi Kurdistan " into Turkish. The findings suggest that state policy serves as a gate in interpreting for the Turkish audience on TV.
“The Commemoration of the Gallipoli Victory in Turkey”, 2013. Gelibolu, Tarih, Efsane ve Anı. Istanbul: Istanbul Medeniyet Üniversitesi. , 2013
The Battle of Çanakkale has been to be the only Ottoman military victory commemorated by the Turk... more The Battle of Çanakkale has been to be the only Ottoman military victory commemorated by the Turkish authorities since 1916. Although it took some time for the particular day to gain a national status, the battle has always been remembered by the locals who tended to consider Çanakkale as a battle in which religious motivations were of utmost importance.
The paper analyses the commemoration ceremonies of the Battle of Çanakkale within the context of the relationship between nationalism and commemorations. It focuses on the dominant discourse that comes out in the official or non-official ceremonies. By analyzing the narratives and public discourses, it argues that the importance attached to the commemorations has surged in 1934 with the famous statement of Atatürk addressing the Anzac mothers . In considering the goals of this statement and the reasons lying behind the sudden upsurge of interest in Çanakkale, gaining control of the Straits and internationalization of the ceremonies come to the fore.
By conceptualizing the ceremonies within the framework of the connection between nationalism and the commemorations, the commemoration of the Battle of Çanakkale has been used in creating collective memory, national identity and building legitimacy by the governing forces. Yet, it seems as if the commemorations have started to serve different purposes than they were initially assumed. The commemorations of the Battle of Çanakkale have been exploited or tried to be manipulated by different political parties, political groups or the governing forces depending upon the internal politics and the world trends of the particular era especially from 1960 until today. Moreover, the governing forces or the opposition seems to have used or abused the commemoration ceremonies and the narrative of the Battle of Çanakkale to bash the others. Although the actors have changed, the Battle of Çanakkale has sustained its position to be a criticism point for the political actors.
Upon a detailed research of newspapers, the Great National Assembly’s proceedings, books, and articles, it is argued that the commemorations of the Battle of Çanakkale help to serve the goals set by the state or the government of the particular period. They are also dominated by a national narrative resting on the principles of solidarity, national unity and ethnic homogeneity depending upon the internal politics. Hence, the 18 March commemorations provided a tool which the governing power used to legitimize and boost its identity by re-constructing the suitable memory and identity that it deems appropriate for the citizens. In a nutshell, the thesis argues that no matter who is in power, the Çanakkale commemorations have been exploited for different actors to their own goals and the changing role of the commemoration ceremonies of the Battle of Çanakkale in the articulation of political legitimacy is revealed.
