In dialogue with the recent monograph by Marcello Pera, entitled "Lo sguardo della caduta. Agostino e la superbia del secolarismo" (2022), this note aims to analyze the Augustinian conception of the relationship between biblical exegesis and natural sciences which can be drawn from the pages of "De Genesi ad litteram". What emerges from the analysis is that Augustine's reflection differs significantly from what, in modernity, will be the position theorised by Galileo. At the same time, it attempts to demonstrate that and why it is incorrect to state that Augustine theorized a priority or superiority of biblical revelation over scientific research regarding knowledge of the natural world.

In this work a reading guide of theDe libero arbitriois offered. In the dialogue, shortly after his conversion, Augustine questions the nature and the origin of moralevil, showing that God cannot be considered the author of the voluntary evil for havinggiven man the gift of free will. God, the creator and supreme administrator of all things, should therefore be thought of not only as good and omnipotent, but also just.

The paper aims to show that representing Augustine’s doctrine of creation through the triad creatio-conversio-formatio is only partially correct. Augustine, in fact, uses “creatio” to designate the achievement of the divine creation, rather than (as we normally do) its first stage. Moreover, he conceives of the creation as a two-stage process, that the divine Trinity both started and accomplished.

This paper focuses on the question of Plotinus’ influence on Augustine’s
conception of the matter of the corporeal world, in order to highlight not only the undeniable tangency points, but also the relevant theoretical differences between the two thinkers. The following topics will be covered: (1) the relationship between the concept of matter and the notions of form, privation, mass, and non-being; (2) the epistemological and ontological status of formless matter; and (3) its ethical and metaphysical implications.

In book X of his De Genesi ad litteram, Augustine devotes extensive relection to the origin of the souls of Eve and Adam’s successor, that, in its initial part, is viewed by most scholars as unclear and not linear. The article proposes an analysis of chapters 1-5 of book X, in which three hypotheses on the origin of the human souls are set out and discussed, in order to highlight the logic and demonstrate the consistency of Augustine’s argumentation.

The paper aims to focus on Augustine’s “De Genesi ad litteram”, in order to study the wide use of philosophical terms, notions and arguments made by the Bishop of Hippo in his twelve books commentary on Genesis 1-3. The main themes examined are: the creation of the spiritual creature, the process of angelic knowledge, the formation of living beings, the double action of divine Providence, the nature of human soul, the different types of vision. Finally, the paper underlines Augustine’s positive attitude towards scientic research, thus highlighting his harmonious conception of the relationship between faith and reason.

In a few texts, Augustine equalizes the chaotic status of primordial matter to the chaos of the Greek poetical tradition. This idea doesn’t appear in the Confessions and in later works, where Augustine elaborates a strictly philosophical description of matter. By highlighting some of the most significant aspects of Augustine's conception of matter, the paper tries to explain the meaning of the reference to the image of chaos and to show that Augustine never considers chaos in negative terms.

examination of all the occurrences of the Latin lemmas "materia" and "materies" in his works; second, to discuss more in detail the vexed question of Plotinus' influence on Augustine’s conception of matter, in order to highlight that the major meeting points between Augustine and Plotinus rest on a purely literal level, and to rather point out the significant conceptual differences between these two thinkers.

Gn. adv. Man., I,xxiii,35-xxv,43).
