To do so, the author focuses on the Catholic and Communist audiences’ perception of the first TV programs. The investigation into these two main groups’ reception will be conduct- ed through the analysis of all the TV references published in the readers’ columns of the two most popular rotocalchi of those years: the Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana and the Communist weekly Vie Nuove. Showing the collective discourse about television, made by very different types of audiences through the use of letters published by these popular magazines, this study points out how television’s impact was also a mediated process. Therefore, the innovative proposal of this book is to suggest an in-depth study of the reception and cultural history of the early Italian television.

European productions, on the other hand, remain for the most part confined to national successes alone, with only few exceptions – such as Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis (Dany Boon 2008), The King’s Speech (Tom Hooper 2010) and, albeit to a lesser extent, Gomorra (Matteo Garrone 2008). In the meantime, the influence of media convergence and the proliferation of digital platforms has demonstrated a series of content circulation strategies that differ to the classic windows of the distribution industry; strategies that have since become central to contemporary debates on film distribution. In academic studies, these mutations have contributed to broadening focus beyond theatrical distribution, in order to account for the circulation of films via alternative, formal or informal channels too (Tryon 2009; Iordanova and Cunningham 2012; Cunningham and Silver 2013). Some recent studies have emphasized in particular how contemporary research on film distribution can no longer exclude informal or non-linear circulation channels (Lobato 2012; Crisp 2015; Lobato and Thomas 2015). With the aim of studying how this new technological context is changing current tendencies, and taking root in the “national interest research project” (PRIN 2015) on the international circulation of Italian cinema, the special issue No. 3/2018 focuses on the strategies and outcomes of European cinema distribution beyond national borders.

It will reconstruct the singularity of this case study in a comparative perspective, considering both the international circulation trends of European national cinemas and the distribution of contemporary Italian films in the United States. An integrated methodology will be adopted, combining film and media industry studies, cultural studies, and the field of art and culture economics. After an analysis of the tendencies of the distribution of Italian contemporary arthouse cinema in the United States, the specific distribution strategies adopted for Dogman will be considered against the background of the financing system within which the production model of the film is embedded. Further, the role of Magnolia Pictures, the North American distributor of Garrone's film, will be inspected through the discussion of some interviews with professionals directly involved in the promotion and distribution of the film.

We draw, moreover, on our experience working on “The International Circulation of Italian Cinema,” a project on which we both collaborated as postdoctoral researchers at different times between 2017 and 2020. Drawing from our experience and attempting to speak to some of the themes of this issue, in these reflections we address essentially two macro questions: first, the nature of individual and collaborative research in Italian film and media studies today, and how certain legal frameworks affect this balance; second, the extent to which the gender balance in public-funded projects is representative of the composition of academic positions in our field.

We compare two different patterns of dissemination of Italian culture during the last decade: on the one hand, the role of contemporary Italian cinema in several film festivals; on the other, the screenings, events and retrospective organized by a series of cultural centers. In the first part, we will provide a quantitative overview on the presence of non-theatrical circulation of Italian cinema abroad, with specific references to the United States, such as Italian cinema in U.S. film festivals and an overview of festivals specifically related to Italian cinema. We will compare this data to the numbers of screenings and retrospectives organized both by Italian cultural institutes and cultural venues in the U.S. during the last decade. In a second part, we will focus on two specific case studies in the American Midwest: the Italian Film Festival USA and the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus (Ohio). In the first case, we will trace the paths of what the Festival director Barbara Klein calls a “cinematic tour of Italy”: a touring festival that takes place every year in April across various cities of the Midwest and beyond, from Cleveland to Indianapolis. In the second case, we will discuss the cultural and social role of Italian cinema in the film programming of the Wexner Center for the Arts, the most important cultural hub of the area, located the Ohio State University campus in Columbus. Our sources are schedules, programs, and interviews with cultural professionals, as well as articles referring to these initiatives published in the local press. Taking these examples as a paradigm, we try to understand how these two different types of circulation influence the narrative patterns and the transnational reception of Italian culture storytelling abroad.

After an overview on the international theatrical distribution of his films, the paper will present some data regarding the admissions obtained by Guadagnino in the two markets of greatest circulation of Italian cinema abroad, the United States and France. Through an analysis of the results made by his last four films-I Am Love (2009), A Bigger Splash (2015), Call me by your name (2017) and Suspiria (2018)-the US case will be examined in depth. Then, the paper will trace themes and issues emerging from the U.S. critical reception of these films, considering both specialist and generalist critics. By proposing a focus on the interrelationship between industrial dynamics and international reception practices, the aim of this contribution is to underline which characters related to a specific idea of Italy and, on the other and, to global art cinema emerge from the international circulation of Guadagnino's films.

In the first part, we consider Federico Fellini’s entire filmography, focusing on the main cinematic texts that deal most explicitly with the world of television: Il bidone (The Swindle) (1955), La Dolce Vita (1960), Prova d’orchestra (Orchestra Rehearsal) (1979), Ginger e Fred (Ginger and Fred) (1986), Intervista (1988) and La voce della luna (The Voice of the Moon) (1989). In order to define Fellini’s thoughts on television and to compare this intellectual assertiveness to traces of his own involvement with several Italian television productions, we connect the analysis of his filmog- raphy with the study of Fellini’s comments, interviews and articles published in several Italian journals and magazines between the 1970s and 1980s. The aim of this article is to trace an organic relationship between Fellini and television, from the production of his films to his notes as an intellectual.

In an article with the challenging title ‘Against Realism’, Alan O'Leary and Catherine O'Rawe (20... more In an article with the challenging title ‘Against Realism’, Alan O'Leary and Catherine O'Rawe (2011) argued that Italian cinema studies needed to move forward. In their view, the abuse of ‘realism’ as a prescriptive as well as descriptive term had stunted research into Italian cinema of the postwar period, channelling it exclusively towards neorealist trends and thus devaluing study of the other forms, movements, auteurs and productions that emerged during the same period. This historiographical tendency, which Christopher Wagstaff aptly called the ‘institution of neorealism’ (2007, 37), encouraged the development of reverential study and by the 1960s had assumed the form of a canon. While the position taken by O'Leary and O'Rawe was certainly provocative, it has served to stimulate thinking about the areas of postwar Italian cinema that had remained in the shadows and unexplored. Starting to focus on an ‘other’ cinema has not had to mean ‘forgetting’ neorealism, but has brought changes to the way that it is studied. Almost ten years later, the challenge seems to be to rethink neorealism as a transnational phenomenon that straddles different periods, genres and contexts; while it has its roots in postwar European culture, it continues to be influential on a global level.

In the first part, it provides an overview of theatrical circulation strategies over the past few decades, offering a historical perspective on the economic and cultural distribution processes of Italian cinema in the United States. In the second, the article focuses on quantitative data in order to examine how many and what kinds of Italian films were distributed in American theatres over the past ten years, as well as their admissions and box office takings. Specifically, this contribution focuses on the two Italian auteurs who obtained the most visibility in the US thanks to the distribu- tion of 4 of their films between 2008 and 2017: Paolo Sorrentino and Luca Guadagnino. In order to define two different distribution models, we will identify the promotion strategies of the most widely circulated films directed by these auteurs: La grande bellezza/The Great Beauty (2013) and Youth (2015) by Sorrentino, and Io sono l’amore/I Am Love (2009) and A Bigger Splash by Guadagnino. In the final section, we relate these cases to the historical circulation patterns of Italian cinema.

the camp, she becomes a Kapò, a victim that the inhumane conditions of the Lager forced to become a collaborator of the persecutors, and then a perpetrator. The Lager in Pontecorvo’s intentions is nothing more than a transposition of society in the Marxist sense, in which the Nazi executioners metaphorically represent the bourgeois classes, while the victims are the proletarian classes oppressed by history and reduced to a subordinate condition. Starting from this, the character of Edith puts on a real awareness of her social condition (class), and at the same time of her identity. And it is precisely from the intersection between class consciousness and religious identity that the paper will begin, with the aim of giving an account both of the Marxist interpretation of the society made by Pontecorvo through the representation of the Lager, and of the "gray" historical condition of its ambiguous protagonist - also through a conclusive analysis of the Italian political reception of the film.

This renaissance of sorts in European scripted pay TV production is also bound up with major changes in the industry that affect how European fic- tion productions begin to circulate. Besides pay TV growth in all the main markets studied, it is also about the arrival of the global SVOD giants based in the US (Netflix and Amazon Prime Video), the explosion of European OTT platforms, and the ever-greater take-up of streaming technology by the more traditional networks (Lobato 2019). All these factors have led to both a certain uniformity in productions across Europe and an increased transnational circulation of these products. This chapter maps out the de- velopment of the transnational circulation of European series in the five sample countries from two distinct yet complementary standpoints. First, we explore the circulation of pay fiction in Europe from an export perspec- tive; second, we focus on how those countries have gone about importing European scripted pay fiction in this context
