The BIM process applied to the built environment represents a much debated topic in the last decade, but it still contains unanswered questions. National and international frameworks introduced standards mainly focused on the levels of detail definition related to new project, leaving a wide interpretation on the 3D reconstruction of existing building. On the other hand, the increase in the use of this modeling approach and the possible expansion of this application in the nearly future lead to predict a significant rise in built field, requiring a general assessment both on global methodology and on its peculiarities. Starting from the complete description and analysis of two modern railway architectures, based on integrated survey, 2D representation up to 3D modeling in BIM environments, the article tries to highlight the limits in the 3D BIM modeling applied on existing construction, suggesting possible solutions in relation with the obtained results. The process is critically evaluated in each passage, in order to focus the BIM research areas useful for built environment analysis.

Various studies have investigated the enduring connections between writing and power. As well, the relationships between architecture and power—between city and power—that testify to the functionality of an architectural work or urban space in transmitting a message have also been addressed. To understand these phenomena fully, it is first necessary to evaluate the way in which they occupy space and especially the relationship established with the buildings on which they are situated. However, it is also necessary to analyze them carefully with design tools, that is, using procedures based on rigorous geometrical/projection fundamentals and on geometrical/proportional analysis. This is in order to accurately understand the formal characteristics, i.e., the graphical/geometrical characteristics, to reveal the means of design and to deeply understand the meaning. This is what the present paper aims to do by adopting a paradigmatic case study: some of the buildings in Rome's University City, which was inaugurated on 31 October 1935. It is an emblematic case which can be defined, according to Petrucci's definition [5], as the expression of an intentional 'program of graphic display' realized by direct will of the power.

A few months by the earthquake, the research proposes a method of “instant modeling” for the reconstruction of the urban digital model of Amatrice. The method underlying the described procedures allows to extract data from the web that flow into the model and conform it. In the case of Amatrice, model becomes an editable storage, able to integrate the data and at the same time freely queryable. Furthermore, the used procedures identify a method with which to represent informed model of any urban center; the results of the process are the basis on which to set a communication project of the cultural good, subject of the representation. The opening of the method to a continuous implementation of the model, means that research is a serious contribution to the theme of the Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM).
