And the Futurists quickly latched on to cinema as a device with great potential to manipulate our perceptions in order to create a new world. In the edited collection Futurist Cinema, Rossella Catanese explores that conjunction, bringing in avant-garde artists and their manifestos to show how painters and other artists turned to cinema as a model for overcoming the inherently static nature of painting in order to rethink it for a new era.
From Sensation to Synaesthesia in Film and New Media, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2019
This collection of essays focuses on current theories of sensation and synaesthesia in films and ... more This collection of essays focuses on current theories of sensation and synaesthesia in films and audiovisual works from a variety of methodological perspectives. It offers an insightful exploration of recent film theories about the cinematic experience. Film spectatorship and its extension in new media as a similar form of audience enjoyment stimulates both our senses and mind by creating immersive environments that involve different levels of emotion and consciousness. The collection addresses these topics through its five sections. The first, “Perception,” focuses on the synaesthetic mechanism underpinning film perception and its connection with affect, cognition, and emotions. The second part, “Movement,” calls into question the role of gesture and movement within the synaesthetic properties of film. The third section, “Senses,” examines how movies stimulate all senses, such as olfaction and haptics, and how senses flow into each other according to a-modal perception. The fourth, “Abstractions,” addresses how avant-garde and abstract cinema trigger synaesthetic reactions in the viewers. The fifth part, “New Media and Media Art,” explores the deep involvement of the human body through the experience of new media and a variety of synaesthetic implications theorized in different perspectives.

If fiction cinema is based on the construction of a story and on the criterion of narration, “other” audiovisual forms (non-fiction) can be traced back to alternative criteria of construction of meaning: namely, «in producing non-fiction, a communicator uses some unit of motion picture footage in an e!ort to assert that something is (or was, or will be, or could be) the case»1. Within the macro-category of non-fiction, utility films draw a peculiar relationship between visuality, power, and industrial organizations: in the 1950s, industrial films and photography have seen a period of maximum flowering, taking place in other countries besides Italy.

As the ViCTOR-E project focused primarily on non-fiction cinema as an agent of post-war reconstruction of the public space, the discussion deals primarily with this type of archive collections and the status and possibilities of their valorisation

Such events o er the lms' material quality as a contrast to the planned obsolescence common in the IT industry. Currently, many lmmakers, artists and collectives create spaces, cooperatives, and independent labs to construct a media archaeology approach that is based on the experimental, hands-on re-enactment of traditional and obsolete practices. These lm performance events thus exhibit the counter-cultural research performatively pursued by lmmakers, artists and collectives in an attempt to attract a perceptive audience capable of fully understanding this complex fruitive experience.

An alternative film history could be written by film archives, which let cinema tell its stories in a new way, through the relationship among cultural establishments.
In Italy wide access policies have not always been the standard for film archives, and this access has been achieved hardly; this may depend on a misunderstanding on the relevance of film heritage. Italy’s overflowing visual environment, filled with artworks, has shaped the conventions towards mass culture, so film heritage has always been acknowledged as subaltern to the traditional cultural heritage’s preservation priorities, which are more respected by the governmental institutions.
This paper introduces some cases of collaboration among educational institutions and film archives for today and tomorrow's personnel training.

_______
In the night of December 28th 1908, the shores of the Strait of Messina witnessed the worst disaster that the young kingdom of Italy had to face: an earthquake followed by a tsunami, occurred at 5:21am, in 37 seconds destroyed severely the cities of Messina and Reggio. Due to the massive loss of human lives and the destruction suffered by hundreds of centres between Calabria and Sicily, the earthquake had a tremendous impact on the coeval public opinion, but also on the historical memory of the country.
L’orfanella di Messina (1909), attributed to Giovanni Vitrotti, who directed the photography, combined an exemplar plot of Christian charity with the emotional power of the catastrophe, and elaborates the themes of loss and mourning through an effective management of superimposition and cross-fading. In this transparency the phantom of a dead little girl takes shape, appearing to her parents and showing them another superimposition: the recent memory of the disaster, as a warning of an ethical imperative.
The case of the film L’orfanella di Messina emblematically places itself into a specific choice of the narrative will, i.e. in re-interpreting the recent memory of trauma as a starting point for a reflection on imagery, emotion, ethics.

This article addresses handmade films and especially artist-run labs as sites of hands-on film culture that reactivate moments and materials from media history. Drawing on existing research, discourses and discussions with contemporary experimental filmmakers affiliated with labs or practicing their work in relation to film lab infrastructure, we focus on these sites of creation, preservation and circulation of technical knowledge about analog film. But instead of reinforcing the binary of
analog vs. digital, we argue that the various material practices from self-made apparatuses to photochemistry and film emulsions are ways of understanding the multiple materials and layered histories that define post-digital culture of film. This focus links our discussion with some themes in media archaeology (experimental media archaeology as a practice) and to current discussions about labs as arts and humanities infrastructure for collective project and practice-based methods.

Within a monograph dedicated to the concept of fear, this article proposes an analysis of the horror film Il demonio (=The Demon, Brunello Rondi, 1963), which aims to build a story on obsession and abjection, observed by a thorough exploration of the popular traditions of Lucania about the supernatural, such as fascination, hex, possession and exorcism. In fact, from the beginning, the famous studies by Ernesto De Martino on Basilicata, described in Magic: A Theory from the South (1959) are explicitly quoted.
The methodology adopted in the interpretation mean to combine the exegesis, typical of film analysis, with the demo-ethno-anthropological research pursued by the director, in an interdisciplinary approach. It points out the ambiguity of the religious dimension of the rural communities in southern Italy society, that in the film shows its hidden side: the pain of desire.

Starting with the case of Pirata! (Cult Movie) (Paolo Ciaffi Ricagno, 1984) the essay aims at pursuing a reflection on the impact of the Punk and Post-Punk scene in the Italian cultural landscape of the Eighties. Together with a few titles of the same time, the film elaborates a dystopian tale which introduces imagery, aesthetics and sounds tied to the youth subcultures.
During these years we attend the gradual failure of the traditional forms of identity construction, in an age of change in social landmarks, which appoints its own expression in a subversion of the clothing and of the symbolic items, outside the models of family and politics that have crossed the previous ages.

In particular, we have pursued the mapping, the cataloguing and the digitization of articles from the journals Cahiers du cinema and Positif for France and Film Comment for the USA, covering the decade 2007-2017, in order to build a digital database. Thus, we have collected a selection of the data provided by the specialized press about the spread and promotion abroad of Italian national cinematographic culture. Such data allows us to emphasize some pivotal stakeholders in the circulation and valorization of Italian cinema through critical reflection, reviews, and interviews. provocazione esplicita e ammiccante.
By analyzing these films, we can find a kind of evolution throughout the “musicarelli” genre. The main motifs focus on references addressed to rock and pop music, parties, and dance. Moreover, these films include many insights on the goods and products of the Italian economic miracle of the 1960s, such as the jukeboxes, the famous made-in-Italy scooters, the clothes, and fashion.
The youth that acts as protagonist in these films was inspired by a contaminated Anglo-American culture; at the same time, the Italian answer to the strong influence of the US and UK music was a hybrid cultural entity that combined the stylish mods and yé-yé girls choreographies to the revolution of the new cultural habits of a transnational society.
In fact, 21st century media art experiences are not only devoted to the incorporeal, unsubstantial and non- isomorphic digital devices. New paths in the current scenario are pursuing research on the materiality of the audiovisual artworks, which actually become labor-intensive processes.
The medium specificity is at the core of the research on analog film: the artisanal process of the cinema medium returns it to its original physicality.
This is the case of the REMI project: REMI is the acronym of Re-Engineering the Moving Image, i.e. a cooperation project run by Mire (Nantes, FR), WORM.Filmwerkplaats (Rotterdam, NL) and LaborBerlin (Berlin, DE), which is focused on the creation, preservation and circulation of technical knowledge about analog film as a creative medium.
Experiments on how to produce the emulsion allow artists to actually reinvent the medium of film. By running many tests (plus developing some educational programs, seminars, artists residencies and workshops), the artists can discover new textures, colours and the motley responses of the photosensitive elements to images.
