El Cid in History and Literature
This volume brings together a number of distinguished scholars in the field of Poema de mio Cid studies. It provides an informed introduction to key literary aspects of the poem, and thoroughly examines many of the complex issues that are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the work (historical context, ideological motivations, prosification in medieval chronicles, the poem’s place in the canon of Spanish literature). Equally important are the new findings that have been put forward since the 1970s, when scholars started to challenge Ramón Menéndez Pidal’s theories that had dominated the philological discourse since the beginning of the twentieth century.
Contributors are Matthew Bailey, Simon Barton, Francisco Bautista, Juan Carlos Bayo Julve, Federico Corriente, Leonardo Funes, Luis Galván, Fernando Gómez Redondo, Eukene Lacarra Lanz, Salvatore Luongo, Georges Martin, Alberto Montaner, Javier Rodríguez Molina, Mercedes Vaquero, Roger Wright, and Irene Zaderenko.

The criticism of greed is an element common to La Araucana de Ercilla and La Austríada de Rufo. Although the latter was inspired by the former, the presence of this topic does not depend on its influence, but responds to the proven Virgilian aphorism auri sacra fames, an idea that is recurrent in the Spanish Early Modern epics, as in Oña’s Arauco domado and Lope de Vega’s La Dragontea. However, this common place covers various situations, because, while in the poems on Mapuche wars it involves a censure of the collective greed of the conquistadores, which threatens the social order, in the other two poems it implies a criticism of the particular greed of the soldiers, which puts in check the good order and decorum of the militia.

to the legends of the Irish hero Cú Chulainn and one of the Horatii roman triplets. According to him, both legends show rites of passage, as it is proved by the comparison with the one performed in the sacred cannibal dance of the Canadian Kwakiutl Tribe. After a detailed review of the evidence, it is
concluded that Cú Chulainn shows, in fact, three kinds of fury, one related to the initation trance, and two others as varieties of true battle fury. Only the rst one can be twined with the Kwakiutl rite, while the young Horatius’ story has no relation with this phenomenon and must be explained as a legal and
etiologic legend.

Rada.

archive. A philological, diplomatic and legal analysis shows that the documents kept in the archive and used for the preparation of the biography were six: the marriage agreement between Rodrigo and Jimena (1074 or 1079), the lists of prisoners of the battles of Morella (1084) and Tevar (1090), the granting of several castles by Alfonso VI (1087 or 1088), the king’s command to attend the campaign of Aledo (1089) and the provision of furnishings proper for Mozarabic liturgical rite for the Valencian mosque Christianized as St. Mary's Church (1094 or
1096), prior to the consecration of the cathedral presided over by bishop Jerome in the Latin rite (1098). From this data, the present study draws historical and historiographical conclusions that change some of the often accepted facts about El Cid, revealing the biography to be a much more elaborate work than was previously thought.

ABSTRACT: The Historia Roderici, a Latin biography of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, The Cid, accurately records many historical facts about its hero (due in part to the use of Rodrigo’s personal archive). At the same time, however, the chronicle includes several anachronisms that point to a date of composition around the end of the twelfth century (about 1190). An analysis of this seeming contradiction underscores the presence of a historical consciousness that might be called “archaeological”, as well as a shortened (or slowed-down) perception of time, which explains why after a couple of generations, any phenomenon is likely to be seen as immemorial. The present paper explores the way in which the dialectics between these two attitudes shapes the making of the biography of Rodrigo the Battler, a hero presented at once as a singular and an exemplary person.

The goal of the present paper is to address the typology of textual errors and to deepen into the aetiology of the erratum or unconscious error, through a joint analysis of both the psychomotricity of the act of copying and the interference of cognitive bias. It is thus intended to arrive at a better understanding of the origin of the error which, in addition, make it possible a more solid foundation of the eventual amendment. Finally, the role of working hypotheses in textual scholarship is reconsidered, by applying it, not to the critical edition itself (which is provisional, not hypothetical), but to its basis, that is, to the theory of a given work’s textuality that allows to establish its edition.
purposes. The protocol is designed for obtaining an image as close to the original object as possible. The first section
provides a detailed description of the materials necessary for photographing handwritten or printed texts. The next section
describes a method adapted to the new circumstances of digital photography, in two steps: capturing RAW images, then
editing them. This study gives a systematic description of the first part, describing, step by step, the technical decisions
related to photographic shot settings in different lighting situations, with the aims of maximizing the quality of the result
and preventing any loss of relevant data.

through documentary channels allow us to approach several cases in which the etymological analysis is interrelated with that of the material and sociocultural features of the referent. There are words related to liturgical and domestic furnishing (alfagiara, alhagara, alfas), textiles and fur (duzuri, alfaneque), euphemisms (gafo, marrano), institutional positions (aluazil, zabascorta) and other terms (cafiz, zemila), as well as the alleged calque of ḫums or ḫammās by the Quintana toponym. On that basis, the Arabism transmission through merchants, slaves, migrants, and settlers is also explored.

Abstract: After analysing the semantic and legal evolution of mark, and the semantic and graphic evolution of logotype, a proposal is made to differentiate between logotype and verbal emblem, and imagotype or iconotype as a graphic emblem. In addition, a proposal is made, in the field of industrial property, to differentiate between three types of distinguishing elements: the trade names of companies, or of their products and services, marks or logotypes, and iconotypes that identify both, and commercial models or typical design elements that form part of the product, of its wrapping or of its accessories (which permits the inclusion of other aspects of the corporate image).
An analysis of the historical, social and cultural composition of present day Ukraine allows to reveal what the true political situation in Ukraine is. This paper deals with the oligarchy and corruption in Ukraine, the ideological orientation of the Maidan, and the role of the extreme right and extreme nationalism. It is shown that impeachment against Yanukovich was, in legal terms, a coup. The reaction of Crimea and the southern and eastern Ukraine regions is not explained as mainly pro-Russian, but anti-nationalist and anti-fascist.
