The following hypothesis is proposed: the problem of ‘mediatization’ in relation to ‘politics’ is not that of the influence of ‘the media’ on political actors and
institutions; instead it should be read as a series of successive transformations in the production of the public as a space, as an environment, as a horizon for discourse reception. From this point of view, the widespread association between the ‘media’ and ‘mediatization’ is a historical contingency. Thus, at present, the ‘mediatization of politics’ cannot be considered without incorporating SNS-specific digital platforms as a main determinant. Moreover, platforms also transform the circumstances in which the media themselves (as institutions) are linked to ‘politics’ (other institutions) and to their own audiences. So the advent of the Internet has changed our own understanding of what the ‘media’ is. Ultimately, this paper is an attempt to present a number of reasons why it is necessary to move away from the term ‘mediatization of’ and to argue for the analytical productivity of the concept of ‘public-ness’ in examining the relations between communication technologies, political practices and the media.

This article aims at analyze those zones in Bourdieu`s, Giddens´s and Habermas´s theories, where the authors attempt to explain the sense production of social practices. This compels us to pay attention on the way each author reflects on the place of discourse on society. Furthermore, we seek to contribute to the dialogue between Social Theory and Communication Sciences, whereas both disciplines, historically, have tended to share (and actually share) objects and problems, in particular those related to the symbolic dimension of social life.

The purpose of this article is proceed to an analytical review of the concept of "mediatization" with special emphasis on what might be considered a sub-variant, "the mediation of politics", but considered from the point of view of the constitution a problematic field is actually an antecedent instead a derivative. The task that we propose has been performed, within a diverse scope of systematic effort, by other researchers. We join, then, a long list, but not to update a state of the art but to trim the theoretical properties of the concept (and therefore, to evaluate their heuristic potential), while we would suggest a distinction of analytical levels which can be useful in guiding future empirical research.

As there is no political representation without staging, and any staging needs a material surface for its deployment, the comparative reconstruction of scenes of representation is required for understanding the impact of socio-technological transformations in the political field. Our analysis assumes that the political dramaturgy of representation entails: (a) that the leader must show a way of connecting with his constituents; (b) therefore, the leader must configure a preferred political subject (i.e., a predominant form of figurative citizenry); and (c) that this configuration constitutes a possible portion of the entire population that can be represented. According to our analysis, each leader is associated with a di...
