Rock & Ritual. Caves, Rocky Places and Religious Practices in the Ancient Mediterranean, 2021

However, both are difficult to define and, because of our lack of knowledge in this area and the mysticism that surrounds them, both are difficult to interpret. Rural shrines would be the chosen spaces to manifest this rituality, with caves and rock shelters being the only places where archaeology can detect the presence of a devotion surely linked to rites of passage and initiation.
One of these locations is the Font Major Cave in L’Espluga de Francolí (Tarragona, Spain). The size of the cave and the quantity and quality of the finds make it a unique feature of the geographical and cultural area in
which it is located, i.e. the region of the Cessetans.

Our starting point is that, in small-scale societies, commensality rituals are one of the contexts where the ideological strategies are usually materialized in a more emphasized form, because feasting articulates important socio-economic aspects such as managing food resources, the generation and storage of surpluses, the articulation of systems of exchange and the consumption and/or display of the prestige goods.
In order to advance in this line of research, we made a detailed study of the material assemblages (ceramic vessels, metallic elements and liturgical instruments) and performed an in depth analysis of those contexts (consumption spaces, storage spaces and certain graves) which have provided evidences associated with the ritual uses of food and drink.

VII-I a. C.).

One example is the association established by Salvador Vilaseca in 1939 between the human remains and grooved pottery discovered in the Cova de Marcó in Tivissa (Ribera d'Ebre, Catalonia). This association has been accepted until today and even become a paradigm for the mixing of autochthonism (inhumation rites) with the introduction of material novelties such as grooved pottery and incineration rites during the first period of the Late Bronze Age. Direct radiocarbon (14 C) dating of human remains from the Cova de Marcó shows that the remains originate from the Chalcolithic period. This indicates that there is no relationship between the sepulchral episode and the grooved pottery associated with it and used to date it. This disputes the paradigm regarding the coexistence of these two funerary practices during the Late Bronze Age and invites scholars to conduct a critical review using absolute dating techniques directly on the human remains of similar cases in order to verify or disprove the paradigm's validity.

The focus has been particularly effective for assessing the development of socio-political complexity and the evolution of socialization strategies that characterize many small-scale societies. In seeking to provide a similar assessment, this study analyses a set of ceramic tableware recovered from the early Iron Age site (seventh to sixth centuries BC) of Sant Jaume (Alcanar, Catalonia) and its associated domestic spaces and architectonic structures. Drawing on the postulates of commensality studies, we examine the functional and symbolic characteristics of these artefacts and the social practices linked to them.

Together, these changes resulted in the emergence of the so-called Iberian culture by the middle of the sixth century bce.
