This article aims to discuss digital reading in early childhood from the empirical analysis of reading events involving children and their parents engaged with literary apps. In a qualitative study, the shared reading of literary apps was observed and analyzed according to the theoretical and methodological framework of multimodal social semiotics, in dialogue with interdisciplinary theoretical discussions around embodiment, affect and agency. Both the readers' responses and the textual characteristics of the literature in app format were taken into account in the analysis of the meaning transactions occurred between child, parent(s) and literary text. The study points out three key dimensions in the reading of literary apps in childhood: (1) embodiment-the reader's body plays an essential role in the construction of meaning and in the phenomenological experience of digital reading; (2) affect-the reader exchanges, within the fictional world that they temporarily inhabit, intensities and emotions with fictional elements, such as characters, and with their parents; (3) agency-readers have agency to negotiate their participation and meaning-making in reading, in spite of design limitations, and expresses their agency through performance and subversion.

The Monster at the End of This Book (2011).

It tells the story of a boy who lives inside a comic book until is forced to move into a world of prose, where the images, colours and sounds of comics must be left behind and the boy must learn to live in a new form of narrative. The story blends the narrative forms of the picturebook, the comic book and of prose with ambiguous representations that generate uncertainty and indeterminacy in the narrative. Self-reflexive and metafictive, in The Panel Boy the protagonist reflects upon and comments on the nature of these different forms of fiction. Finally, several intertextual and intervisual allusions position the narrative in relation to both fine and commercial art, implicitly discussing the relationship between them and bringing awareness to the fact that the meanings of signs are attributed by the reader in relation to other texts and the context. It concludes with a reflection as to whether the limitations generated by the power imbalance between the child reader and the adults author and mediator within the spectrum of children's literature allow for a truly postmodern picturebook.

This thesis analyzes how playfulness is expressed in eight picturebook apps available for the iPa... more This thesis analyzes how playfulness is expressed in eight picturebook apps available for the iPad, four of them being born-digital picturebook apps and the other four picturebooks being transmediated into apps from print counterparts. These works of digital literature, aimed at children between 3 and 8 years old, underwent a close reading through the lenses of social semiotics, as presented by Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuwen, and its manifestation in picturebook theory, as presented by David Lewis’ ecology of the picturebook. Playfulness was analyzed according to the three categories proposed by Nikolajeva: through the interanimation among modes, through metafiction and through performance–implicit and explicit. One born-digital and one transmediated app was selected among a sample of 100 picturebook apps as quintessential examples of that type of playfulness, although all apps manifested on different levels all kinds of playfulness.
The multimodal analysis of these picturebook apps revealed that each app is unique in the way modes both individually and in combination work as a multimodal text in expressing playfulness. The different modes may work in counterpoint to generate irony, or they may complement each other building signs that are ironic in contrast with other signs inside the narrative. The inclusion of interactivity makes possible new combinations of modes that integrate reader inputs and various forms of participation. Participation is an important element in the construction of metafiction since, as interactive narratives, most texts manifest an overt recognition of the reader as a participant.
The differences between born-digital and transmediated apps are subtle, but this sample suggested that the counterpart among modes is used as a playful resource more significantly in transmediated apps, while the born-digital apps count more on interactivity and performance to generate playfulness. Half of the transmediated apps manifested covert metafiction, while all of the born-digital texts manifested overt metafiction. Finally, in terms of performance, the born-digital apps showed highly theatricalized participation of the reader and also promoted reader participation in co-authoring, which was not seen in the transmediated apps.

Enhanced e-picturebooks are electronic picturebooks equipped with audio (narration, sound effects), animation, interactivity and games, amongst other possible features, with the objective of enhancing the reading experience. According to David Lewis in his book Reading contemporary picturebooks: Picturing text, of 2001, the combination of text and images in picturebooks is limitless. Each picturebook is unique because the interanimation between a text and a image to the construction of meaning cannot be achieved the same way by any other combination. Extending that concept to enhanced e-picturebooks, the inclusion of multimedia and interactive elements generate a new process of meaning
making. By applying the ecological theoretical framework proposed by David Lewis, this study will close read three enhanced e-picturebook versions of the fairy tale of The Three Little
Pigs and analyze the how multimedia and interactive elements, together with texts and images, interanimate to create meaning.
Fairy tales are definitely the most popular genre in enhanced e-picturebooks. In November 2012, there were more than 90 different versions of the Tree Little pigs’ story in the iTunes
appstore. After a quick analysis, it is possible to see that the multimedia and interactive features used in those apps varied, as also varied the role they played in the narrative.
From that analysis, three categories emerged, according to the level of importance these features represent in the meaning making process: low level of participation, medium level of participation, high level of participation. Three apps were submitted to close reading in this study, one from each category, respectively: The Three Little Pigs, by Stepworks Books; The tree little pigs, by TapTap kids; 3 Little Pigs, by Nosy Crow. The analysis of these ebooks shows that the more the digital features are integrated into the narrative, the more novel and experimental these enhanced e-books are in comparison to print books, providing a more immersive and enhanced reading experienced. On the other hand, when the features do not have a clear participation in the narrative, they end up working more as a distraction than an enriching element.
Since a great number of book enhanced e-picturebooks for children are being published and accessed by children, it is important to understand how these digital narratives work and how they differ from print picturebooks. The findings of this study may help creators and publishers to understand the mechanics of this kind of narrative, contributing to the enhancement of their creative process, but may also help parents, teachers and librarians to establish criteria for evaluating what is already on the market.

ABSTRACT
This work explores the interactive book app for children
as a form of literary expression that requires from the
young reader the capacity to orchestrate various forms
of literacy to promote their ability to read critically
multimodal, digital and interactive texts. Serafini’s
model for the analysis of picturebooks in three levels,
perceptive, structural, and ideological (SERAFINI,
2010; 2015), is proposed as a didactic tool to promote
these multiliteracies at school through the reading of
picturebook apps.

Finally, in terms of performance, the born-digital apps showed highly theatricalized participation of the reader and also promoted reader participation in co-authoring, which was not seen in the transmediated apps.
analyses how animation works as a meaningful mode that conveys narrative in picturebooks. Starting with the different animations present in the codex picturebook, from the simple movement of turning the page to the paperengineered animations of pop-up books, we move to how animation is part of a multimodal meaning-making system in electronic picturebooks. Technical considerations include a comparison of embedded video animation and sprite animation adapted from videogame development. Examples of meaningful animation in selected e-picturebooks are discussed.

This paper will discuss the different forms through which performance takes place in picturebook apps, showing examples of well-established picturebook apps available for the iPad. Performance will be considered under the spectrum that ranges from explicit, when readers theatricalize the narrative, to implicit, when readers do not enact the narrative, but control through interactivity gestures performed by characters. Also, whether performing implicitly or explicitly, the position of the reader in relation to the narrative may be fictional, as they assume the role of a character while performing, or metafictional as they become participants in the narrative themselves.
In this paper, I will present my research methodology, which draws on multimodal epistemology, methods and analytic framework. Multimodality aligns with the constructionist epistemology, and considers that “meaning is understood as being realized in the iterative connection between the meaning potential of a material semiotic artefact, the meaning potential of the social and cultural environment it is encountered in, and the resources, intentions, and knowledge that people bring to that encounter” (Jewitt, 2013, p. 251). The observation of the reading events will be considered through multimodal data collection and transcription methods and I will analyze both picturebook apps and the reading events as multimodal texts, considering the three metafunctions of texts: the first function is to represent the world around us, the ideational or representational function; another function consists of establishing social interactions, the interpersonal or interactive function; finally, texts need to present coherence, both internal and with the context of production, the textual or compositional function. Both data collection and analysis will be exemplified with examples from my pilot study.

This case study will do an in-depth qualitative analysis of one child’s transactions with one fictional picturebook app in order to provide us with some insights of how children participate in the construction of meaning from multimodal and multimedia picturebook apps texts. The analysis will consider how children immerse themselves in the text both through its literary features and through its interactive features, as well as how children manifest their responses to the text in their gestures and dialogue with an adult co-reading. The adult contribution and influence upon the child’s responses will be also contemplated. The picturebook app text will be analyzed in terms of its meaning-making potential, and contrasted to what the reader really makes out of it as he/she makes decisions towards one in detriment of many other possible reading and narrative paths.
Data collection will constitute of video recordings of a child interacting with a picturebook app at a parent co-reading situation at home, in a naturalistic setting, and interviews with both children and parents.
The potential of the picturebook app text as well as how it is unfolded by this child reader in this unique situated reading experience will be analyzed under the light of a framework that encompasses picturebook theory, namely the work of David Lewis, Perry Nodelman, and Maria Nikolajeva and Carole Scott; reader-response theory, especially as it is framed by Louise Rosenblatt; and social semiotics, as described especially by Theo van Leeuwen and Gunther Kress. This case study is part of my PhD research about the construction of meaning of children reading picturebook apps.
In this paper I will analyze play and playfulness in the story app Little Red Riding Hood, by Nosy Crow. In this retelling of the classic fairy tale, reader’s participation help shaping the narrative, as they make decisions regarding the different paths Little Red must take, playing mini-games along the way. These decisions affect the outcomes the wolf faces, creating 8 slightly different narratives with 3 different endings.
While the text presents playful affordances, the stance readers take toward them and how they respond to their “blueprint” are equally fundamental for analyzing play and playfulness. Thus, besides considering the playful features of the text, my analysis will draw on the observation of 4-year-old children engaging with this app in joint-reading situations with a parent. With the combination of textual and empirical analysis, this paper aims to discuss the different meaning-making processes that promote play in these reading events and how playfulness is constructed in the combination of textual features, readers’ stances, and socio-cultural context.
