To support our theoretical analysis, we investigate the coverage of two cases in the Finnish right‐wing counter‐media online publication MV‐lehti. Our findings enable new readings on the nature of both counter‐media work and remix cul‐ ture. In fact, counter‐media publishing leans more in the direction of remix culture—which is based on the act of using pre‐existing materials to produce something new—than towards traditional journalistic convention, with its rules and eth‐ ical guidelines. MV‐lehti’s practice of combining and layering different material is discernibly political, often resembling media activism. "Käsittelen tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassani historian uudelleentuottamis... more "Käsittelen tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassani historian uudelleentuottamista sanomalehtitekstissä. Empiirinen huomioni on kuusikymmentäluvun rakentumisessa vuoden 2008 Helsingin Sanomissa (HS). Historian kautta lehti rakentaa ”me”-kuvaa, jossa historiallisesti katsoen etenkin kommunismi edustaa ”toiseutta”. Tutkimuksen merkittävin teoreettinen näkökulma koskee sanomalehteä menneisyyden ja tulevaisuuden leikkauspisteessä, nykyisyydessä. Sanomalehden yksi päätehtävistä on historian ja ajan näkökulmasta kertoa lukijalle, että tänään on todella ”tänään”. Toinen tehtävä on rakentaa lukijan identiteettiä osana yhteisöä, jolla on tietynlainen menneisyys ja ajatus omasta tulevaisuudesta. Lukija hahmottaa näin itsensä ajassa ja osana lehden kuviteltua yhteisöä. Asiasanat: historian uudelleentuottaminen, historiakuvat, 1960-luku, Helsingin Sanomat"

We rely on mature tools and technologies, like R, WebAnno or Prolog, that are combined in a highly automated pipeline. Such architecture can deal well with underspecified and frequently changing requirements and allow a continuous exchange of information between the computational and domain experts in all stages of the project. The workflow description is illustrated on a concrete example concerning news media analysis.

In lieu of describing the actual results from our analyses, we instead describe our approach, and how it led into a versatile general template for an iterative and discursive approach to digital humanities research, which moves toward questions of interest both fast, as well as with high capability to truly capture the phenomena from all viewpoints of interest.

Tutkimuksen teoria-rakenne pohjaa journalismintut¬kimuksen ohella historiatieteeseen. Tutkimuksen analyysikehikko on rakennettu erilaisten tutkimuksellisten inter-ventioiden varaan. Tutkimus etenee koko aineiston sisällön erittelystä kohti raja-tumpia interventioita. Tutkimuksen aineiston käsittelyssä on hyödynnetty sisällön analyysia ja historiantutkimukselle ominaista lähdekritiikkiä. Erilaisten lähestymis-tapojen vuoksi tutkimuksessa toteutuu ajatus menetelmä- tai teoriatriangulaatiosta: laajempaa tutkimusteemaa lähestytään eri näkökulmista, jotta kokonaiskuva vastaisi mahdollisimman hyvin tutkimuskysymyksiin. Tutkimuksen perusteella suuri osa sanomalehden esittämästä historiasta syntyy muita asioita koskevien esitysten sivutuotteena. Sanomalehden arkisin histo¬ria on faktanomaista käsiteltävän asian taustan toteamista. Murroksen aihekirjo on aineistossa laaja. We consider the discussion on the differences and similarities surrounding both the legacy media, and newcomers such as countermedia, to be part of journalism’s boundary work: the ongoing, yet temporally fickle, process of marking the boundaries between journalism and non-journalism. We demonstrate how both legacy and countermedia actors drew boundaries through vocabulary, institutional reflection, demarcation practices, and ethos. While the Finnish media underlined its institutional autonomy and dominance by defending the social good of journalism and dubbing countermedia as fake media, countermedia actor MV-lehti drew its own boundaries by ridiculing media professionals, media institutions, and journalists. Our findings illustrate how these actors consistently asserted the flawed ideological foundations of “the other”, with the consequence ...

Pirkkalan peruskoulussa toteutettiin vuosina 1973-1975 opetuskokeilu, jota Leskinen kutsuu kirjansa esipuheessa lasten mielten myrkyttämiseksi kommunistisella pro-pagandaopetuksella. Leskinen keskittyy tutkimuksessaan osoittamaan, kuinka koulukokeilu liittyi Sdp:n tavoitteeseen siirtää Suomi koulutuspolitiikan avulla sosialistiseen järjestel-mään.
&... more "Tutkimus käsittelee 1960-luvun aseistakieltäytymistä osana radikalismiksi ja sukupolvikonfliktiksi kutsuttuja ilmiöitä. Sodanjälkeiset sukupolvet mobilisoituivat aiemmista sukupolvista poikkeavalla tavalla eri puolilla maailmaa.

Tutkittujen lehtien perusteella Euroopan integraatioon liittyvillä vuosipäivillä on vakiintunut asema suomalaisessa ...

The Image of Urho Kekkonen in Helsingin Sanomat’s References to the 1960s This article explores the history of President Urho Kekkonen as it appeared in the pages of daily newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat (HS). His history is produced in different sections and historical references in every-day work of a newspaper. Separate pieces of representations produced by writers, editors and interviewees construct the image which is as much about representing and remembering as it is about forgetting and omitting. This article’s material is limited to references to the 1960s in the HS’s volumes of 2008 and 2013. The sample is limited in order to analyse the idea of “different types of Kekkonen” in Finnish history culture. This study shows that the image of Kekkonen constructed in these references to 1960s is that of a powerful president. For example, young Kekkonen, Prime Minister Kekkonen, and the frail President after 25 years reign, are all omitted. Representations and mean...

Aineistona on vuoden 2008 Helsingin Sanomien 1960-lukua koskevat viittaukset.

English abstract for my PhD "Journalistic History-Making - 1960's in Helsingin Sanomat in 2008 and 2013":
This study explores¬ journalistic history-making through references to the 1960s in the daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat (HS). The aim is to understand how and why journalism represents past the way it does. Theoretical framework of the study is built on journalism studies and historical theory.
The empirical data has been gathered from volumes of 2008 and 2013 in HS. The data consists of 3 789 independent news or other journalistic items which refer to the 1960s. Additionally 101 history-based articles or article collections are used separately or as a sample. Majority of these history-based articles and a greater quantity of references to the 1960s are in the volume of 2008, which points to 2008 being a particular year of remembrance of the 1960s.
The analytical framework of this study is built on multiple research interventions. The study starts from a broad content analysis and proceeds to more limited interventions. Both qualitative and quantitative analytical tools are used in addition to source criticism, which is more common in historical research. Different methods and theoretical approaches are characteristic to triangulation: illuminating the subject of the study from different perspectives sheds light on the big picture.
Most of history in a newspaper emerge as by-products of representations of other things. The most common references – especially in news journalism – are factual statements of any given subjects’ past. History and its interpretations are part of more magazine-like and “soft” journalism in a newspaper. They give journalism a chance to immerse in the subject’s background, the people’s experience, the roots of different phenomena, and the stories encircling all of these.
This study concludes that HS addresses the 1960s in Finland as a decade of rupture and modernization. The spectrum of this rupture is extensive in the data, but the rupture itself is represented in a uniform manner. This makes into a dominant story form, when journalism reaffirms this one interpretation of a decade’s nature by repeating, recycling, and reducing. Furthermore HS fails to build meaningful connections between this rupture and today’s world. For example the birth of welfare state politics in Finland is represented as natural and consistent development, which has very little in common with today’s welfare state and its challenges.
Also, the newspaper utilizes event-year pairings as a way to summarise international events’ background in an economic way. These pairings are called myth keys, as reader needs to fill in the gaps between today’s events and past events.
As for Finland’s international position HS sees Finland as part of the West. HS’s own community i.e. “us” is situated on the Cold War winner’s side, although Finland’s position in the 1960s Cold War era remains debatable in its pages. The way HS values liberal democracy and free speech in its references to 1960s emphasizes its roots in the western Euro-Atlantic journalistic tradition.
History and journalism are viewed as truthful narratives in this study, as they are both linked by systematic curiousness. Source criticism can be seen as a practical dimension of that curiousness, although by tradition it’s different in both fields. History and journalism represent past in different ways, because they differ in certain important aspects such as work practices, time span, commercialism, and understanding of truth. For example journalism addresses memory and source representativeness differently from academic history. If exaggerated, a journalist can write a story, which is journalistically right, but historically wrong.
This study suggests that the ritual view of communication affects journalistic history-making by strengthening the community and weakening the criticism in editorial process. This is emphasized by journalism’s trait to affirm communality and celebrate its community’s shared values through anniversary and history journalism. The archetypal case under a ritual view is a sacred ceremony that draws people together in fellowship. It confirms instead of informs. This sort of journalism is commemoration willed in the present, and it is foreign to historical research.
It has been said that journalism leans forward to future and predictive speculation, but this study indicates that the past is still a relevant dimension in everyday journalism. Journalists are public historians, who participate in the social process of history-making and the construction of a shared past.

Tutkimuksen teoria-rakenne pohjaa journalismintut¬kimuksen ohella historiatieteeseen.
Empiirinen aineisto koostuu vuosien 2008 ja 2013 HS:sta sekä niissä esiintyvistä jutuista, joissa viitataan 1960-lukuun. Aineistossa on yhteensä 3 789 itsenäistä juttua.
Tutkimuksen analyysikehikko on rakennettu erilaisten tutkimuksellisten inter-ventioiden varaan. Tutkimus etenee koko aineiston sisällön erittelystä kohti raja-tumpia interventioita. Tutkimuksen aineiston käsittelyssä on hyödynnetty sisällön analyysia ja historiantutkimukselle ominaista lähdekritiikkiä. Erilaisten lähestymis-tapojen vuoksi tutkimuksessa toteutuu ajatus menetelmä- tai teoriatriangulaatiosta: laajempaa tutkimusteemaa lähestytään eri näkökulmista, jotta kokonaiskuva vastaisi mahdollisimman hyvin tutkimuskysymyksiin.
Tutkimuksen perusteella suuri osa sanomalehden esittämästä historiasta syntyy muita asioita koskevien esitysten sivutuotteena. Sanomalehden arkisin histo¬ria on faktanomaista käsiteltävän asian taustan toteamista.
Murroksen aihekirjo on aineistossa laaja.
