Problem statement: Data entry form is a convenient and successful tool for information collection by filling in the sheets using pen and handwriting. One of the most important fields in these forms is the data filled boxes. Extracting the handwriting from the data entry forms is important for many purposes such as in documenting and archiving. The extraction process is also important in situations such as when it is necessary to the handwritten recognition process. Approach: A simple and effective approach is presented to extract handwritten characters, including digits and letters of any language from data filled boxes of data entry form and to deal with cases of overlaps between the handwritten characters and boxes’ lines. Segmentation of human faces from still images is a research field of rapidly increasing interest. Although the field encounters several challenges, this paper seeks to present a novel face segmentation and facial feature extraction algorithm for gray intensity images (each containing a single face object). Face location and extraction must first be performed to obtain the approximate, if not exact, representation of a given face in an image. The proposed approach is based on the Voronoi diagram (VD), a well-known technique in computational geometry, which generates clusters of intensity values using information from the vertices of the external boundary of Delaunay triangulation (DT). The aim of image restoration is to restore the image affected by degradations to the most desired form. It comprises a set of techniques applied to the degraded image to remove or reduce the cause of degradations. This study focuses on Astronomy images. Astronomy images suffer from mainly two types of degradations: atmospheric turbulence blur and additive white Gaussian noise. This study presents a new method to restore astronomy images by proposing a hybrid method that combines three techniques to restore a degraded image. The first technique is phase preserving algorithm used for the denoising operation. Then a normalization operation is employed to provide the image its natural grayscale intensity. After that Richardson Lucy deblurring algorithm is used to deblur the image depending on the Point Spreading Function (PSF) determined earlier. When the deblurring process is completed, the anticipated image will be in the most desirable form.

This paper presents a novel algorithm to resolve an open problem to correctly locating letter boundaries in off-line unconstrained cursive handwritten word images. The proposed algorithm is based on vertical contour analysis. Following preprocessing, during the course of pre-segmentation vertical contours are analyzed from right to left. Furthermore to improve accuracy of segmentation, trained ANN is employed to validate segment points. For fair analysis, experiments were performed on IAM benchmark database. Results obtained thus show that the proposed approach is capable to accurately locating the letter boundaries for unconstrained cursive handwritten words.

This paper compares contour based and non-contours based techniques for extracting words from unconstrained handwritten text lines. Proposed novel approach is based on contours of the words rather only considering threshold for inter-word gaps as previous studies. In this approach, contour of each word is examined along with threshold for inter-word gaps to extract words with high confidence. Unlike previous studies, preprocessing technique is not applied, that enhance the speed significantly. Furthermore, a simple technique for punctuation detection is proposed to increase accuracy of word extraction. For fair comparison text lines are taken randomly from IAM benchmark database and threshold calculation is kept same for all techniques. Experiments thus performed, exhibit improved results and speed over the conventional word extraction methods. Furthermore, developed techniques and results are compared with the other approaches available in the literature using same benchmark database.
