VDD detains a non-citizen of Latvia on suspicion of self-training for terrorism

On 2 May, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) detained a non-citizen of Latvia on suspicion of self-training for terrorism and distributing content inciting to terrorism to other persons.

The criminal case against the person was initiated on 22 April 2024 pursuant to Section 794 Paragraph 1 and Section 796 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law.

During the investigation, VDD established that the person supports the ideology preached by the terrorist group Daesh. The Service found that the person intensively engaged in correspondence within groups supporting extremism and terrorism on the communication platform Telegram, where ideological materials of terrorist organizations, as well as various instructions for carrying out terrorist acts, are distributed. 

In addition to the detention, on 2 May VDD conducted criminal proceedings at the person's place of residence in Riga, during which several data carriers, notes, documents, as well as explosive TNT and ammunition were seized for further examination.

The suspect has been applied the security measure – detention. The investigation is ongoing, and VDD will provide additional information according to the progress of the criminal case.
