NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER GPU Price Cuts Hit Retail, A Hint At RTX 50 Launch Closing Upon Us?

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER GPU is the fastest gaming graphics card that you can buy across all regions. While the RTX 4090 is the flagship, it is restricted in various regions due to its high TPP (Total Processing Power), mainly in China, while the RTX 4090D is only available in the Asian Pacific markets.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER is better than its non-SUPER sibling in all possible ways. It comes with the full AD103-400 GPU with 10,240 cores, 320 TMUs, 112 ROPs, and 64 MB of cache (L2). The GPU also features a boost clock of up to 2550 MHz and packs 16 GB of GDDR6X VRAM that's configured at 23 Gbps across a 256-bit bus interface for up to 736 GB/s of total bandwidth. The card features the same TGP at 320W (default) but custom variants do push it slightly close to 400W though the card being super efficient never actually consumes that much power when we compare the average figures which are mostly in the 250-300W range.

While the GPU doesn't offer a huge performance uplift (3-5% at best) over the Non-SUPER RTX 4080, it does have one big leverage and that's the price. The card originally launched at a $999 MSRP which was $200 US lower than the Non-SUPER variant. Retailers and AIBs had to cut the prices of the Non-SUPER variant drastically to make it relevant though it was too late and now, NVIDIA and its partners have ceased production of the Non-SUPER variant, focusing entirely on their newer RTX 4080 SUPER designs.

PNY has some great GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER designs such as the XLR8 and the Verto, featuring a triple-fan and triple-fan cooling solution. This model was priced in the $999 reference range but it has seen some discounts over the past couple of months. Just last month, we reported that the graphics card fell to $949.99 US for a short time and now, it is once again available at the same price point thanks to Newegg US.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER competes with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the RTX option looks more desirable from a gaming perspective given the loads of features it packs. The Radeon side has also upped its game with a strong set of features such as FSR 3, Frame Gen, and strong rasterization performance but NVIDIA's DLSS, RT, and Frame Gen performance and quality are ahead of the competition plus the rasterization performance differences between the RTX 4080 SUPER and the RX 7900 XTX vary from game to game. NVIDIA cards also run much more efficiently and there are tons of designs to select from.

AMD does have the upper hand in terms of pricing with its Radeon RX 7900 XTX currently available for as low as $899 US (Yeston Sakura) and several other variants in the $930-$980 US price range. The graphics card has also dropped down to $799 US at its lowest, a few months back. So it's a matter of what you want, slightly better value or an all-rounder package.
