U.K. To Reintroduce National ID Cards

Posted by jtesta on May 25th, 2005

Guardian Unlimited: Parliament to see ID card bill anew

“The government will today reintroduce its controversial bill for identity cards, which could see compulsory cards as early as 2010.

Charles Clarke, the home secretary, will reintroduce the measures, which were first proposed in the last parliament and would see voluntary cards phased in alongside passports from 2007-8.

As well as the bill, the government is also this lunchtime publishing the results of a trial of the biometric technology on which the cards would be partially based. The trial, involving 10,000 people, was carried out last year by the UK Passport Service.

Recent opinion polls show public support for ID cards ranging up to 80%, although critics oppose them on grounds of civil liberties and of cost.”
