[FESTIVAL]
Spider-Man Week in NYC
Last summer the crew of Spider-Man III swooped down on the city, blocking sidewalks, streets, and subway entrances and forcing Gothamites to do what they hate the most—take the long way around. But this week Peter Parker (a/k/a Tobey Maguire) and the gang are back not to inconvenience you but to entertain you with Spider-Man Week in NYC. Today see the cast at Rockefeller Plaza from 7 to 10 a.m. for a “webslinger showdown” on the Today show. Other Spidey highlights include a never-before-displayed Spider-Man comic book collection at the New York Public Library, a midnight screening of the new movie at Forbidden Planet (840 Broadway) on May 3, and “Free Comic Book Day” at participating stores on May 5. The festivities conclude with an evening of urban poets performing Spider-Man raps at the Apollo Theater on May 6. (Ashman)

Butterfly Conservatory
While the temperature may be dropping outside, spring has just arrived at the Butterfly Conservatory, a 1,300-square-foot enclosure designed to resemble a rainforest, with lush tropical vegetation and flowering plants. Inside, get up close to more than 500 brilliantly colored butterflies as they float freely about the greenery, often landing on visitors’ heads and clothes. Now in its ninth year, the exhibit features illustrated displays, including a case of cocoons and emerging pupae, and nectar-stocked feeding stations. (Ashman)
Daily from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. through May 28, American Museum of Natural History Central Park W & 79th St New York, NY 10024 Upper West Side (212) 769-5100 www.amnh.org/ , $16–$25

More Fear: The Final Call
Two photographers, both of whom focus their lenses mostly on African-American communities in the city, team up for the extraordinary exhibit More Fear: The Final Call. Akintola Hanif’s previous work has been shown at Iandor Fine Arts Gallery, among others, and he is currently a resident documentarian for Youthbuild Newark. Jamel Shabazz has been capturing urban life for more than three decades, and is the author of Back in the Days and A Time Before Crack. This show is subtitled “A Visual Diary of the Finest and Most Nadir Moments of a People Neglected,” and it is exactly that: from shots of affluent pre-schoolers dressed in matching Morehouse College sweatshirts, frolicking on plush lawns, to a double-amputee picking through a dumpster. (Switzer)
From 3 to 6, through May 4, Harriet's Alter Ego 293 Flatbush Ave between St Mark's and Prospect Pl Brooklyn, NY 11217 Park Slope (718) 783-2074 harrietsalterego.com, $free

SonicVision
What if you could actually see images as Goldfrapp’s “Strict Machine” blasts through the speakers? It might look a lot like this digital music show featuring kaleidoscopic visuals compliments of the Museum and MTV2. It’s like Disney’s Fantasia for adults, with animation synchronized to songs by Coldplay, Stereolab, Moby, and U2 instead of Beethoven, Bach, and Stravinsky. (Franklin)
Ongoing, American Museum of Natural History Central Park W & 79th St New York, NY 10024 Upper West Side (212) 769-5100 www.amnh.org/ , $12-$15

[PARTY]
François K
The defunct Body & Soul party was legendary for a few reasons, and DJ François K was the biggest one. The man (and his B&S; brethren) has a patent on the recipe for throwing good weeklies. His Deep Space shindig continues to take listeners to the farthest reaches of dub and house music, and has earned him many accolades among the nightlife cognoscenti, including a Club World Award last year for “Best Resident DJ.” Tonight’s party is a culmination of a month-long celebration of four years of success with plenty of spacey, abstract grooves and dub poems by guest lyricist Infinity.
