Shemar denies magazine's outing

Shemar Moore, that hot actor in Criminal Minds, denies there's anything behind a National Enquirer story about him swimming nude on a gay beach.

Moore says he was there with two females.

"I went on vacation with two girlfriends of mine who, interestingly enough, got cut out of the pictures. We found a nude beach that, as far as I know, was a unisex beach . . I had two hot chicks with me who wanted to go skinny dipping,” he said.

"I’ll say it right now: I’m not gay. I love women. Women are God’s greatest creation. But I have no problem with people who are gay."

Meanwhile if you want to see a lot Moore of his day at the beach (warning: nudity) keep reading.

Australian Idol Watch

If early publicity pics are anything to go by this should be the seating order of judges on the next Australian Idol.

The return of Dicko has created a dilemma for producers, potentially stuck with two nasty judges. Putting the ever-supportive Marcia between them seems a wise move, but assuming the direction does not alter, it allows Kyle the last word.

Another photo in the advance publicity pack shows the same seating line-up in the audition room.

In truth Dicko can be just as enthusiastic for contestants as he is critical. Idol may also choose to allow only 2 or 3 judges to comment on contestants in much the same way as judges on Dancing with the Stars. We'll have to wait and see.

The show launches on Sunday August 5 with a 90 minute audition pack from Brisbane and Darwin. On Monday its Adelaide and Perth.

Of the 35,000 auditionees there are 136 finalists (Sunday Aug 19) culled to a Top 24 (Monday Aug 20). the following week sees live semi-finals on Sunday - Thursday nights with 2 contestants making it through. The Wild Card show follows with the Final 12 revealed on Monday September 3rd.

Idol also has a new, purpose-built studio at Fox Studios, which is revealed in September. Not surprisingly producers are calling this their, "best top 24 in five years."

An Idol: Up Close and Personal special will also return.

Both John Foreman and Erena Clark return this year. Stylist is Sheridan Tyler.

The Top 136 breaks down as:
ACT: 2 (1m / 1f)
NSW: 49 (23m / 26f)
NT: 3 (2m / 1f)
QLD: 15 (7m / 8f)
SA: 10 (4m / 6f)
TAS: 1 (1m)
VIC: 35 (18m / 17f)
WA: 21 (9m / 12f)

First elimination: Holly Weinert
Second elimination: Brianna Carpenter
Third elimination: Lana Krost
Fourth elimination: Mark de Costa

First Review: Australia's Best Backyards

Next week Durie competes head-on with himself in a curious piece of Aussie network scheduling. Nine, which dropped his programme Backyard Blitz claiming the gardening genre had been exhausted, has been somewhat-embarrasingly attracting good figures for their unscreened episodes dusted off their shelves.

Seven, which was happy to snap up Durie, offers an alternative point of view, and a potentially fresh take on the genre via Australia's Best Backyards. (Nine is cheekily calling BB "Australia's best backyards" in its own promos).

The two viewpoints couldn't be more opposed. So who is on the money here?

After a look at Australia's Best Backyards I'd have to say Seven....

This thirty minute magazine-style show is effortlessly easy viewing.

Viewers get the chance to snoop into lush and varied properties, both suburb and and rural, with the same vouyerism that attracts an auction down your street. It's a no-fuss peek around a block with three gardening presenters on hand to illustrate and educate us on the flora. In this sense it really doesn't see the need to reinvent the wheel which has long been in place on host of other gardening and lifestyle shows.

Each week one garden is selected as the night's best to compete for a series title as "Australia's best", which serves neatly as a throughline.

Durie bookends the show with relaxed ease. He only appears in one location sequence (which probably fits into his Oprah-style schedule) and two co-presenters do two more.

The use of music and in particular, the computer-generated modellings of each garden, work well.

I'm not a regular viewer of this genre either, but I do feel I'd seen enough of down-and-out families having sandpits and pergolas thrown up in their backyards in record time on Nine.

In contrast it's easy to partake of a finished product and admire its achievements. Should fit well in a family-friendly Sunday slot.

Australia's Best Backyards premieres 6:30pm Sunday July 29 on Seven.

Bumped: Pirate Master

TEN has made Pirate Master walk the plank.

The show hosted by Aussie Cameron Daddo has been removed from its Thursday 7:30pm timeslot and will linger out in TEN's favourite dumping ground, Sunday afternoons.

This week it only had 622,000 viewers.

The show will next be seen at 12pm Sunday July 29 where it had previously bumped Teen Fit Camp and Celebrity Dog School.

And what's replacing the show?

You guessed it. Simpsons repeats.

Sunrise drops comedienne

Funny lady Fiona O'Loughlin has been dropped by the Sunrise team, at least for the time being.

O'Loughlin's brand of humour, which has been a part of The Nation, Rove and Spicks and Specks, was reportedly not sitting so well according to the Herald-Sun.

She was replaced this week by TV reviewer and cook Flip Shelton, who currently reviews on 3AW and Herald-Sun.
