Seven drops the Twist

"For the first time ever disco will be added to the dance styles performed and there will be a big twist during the series for the celebrities."
- Seven Press Release 31 January 2007.

As Dancing with the Stars approaches its final episode of the series, Seven is backing down from its promise to deliver a twist.

When last I spoke with the Executive Producer he was coy about when "or if" the show would unveil its promised twist. So far nobody from Publicity has bothered to clarify whether it will go ahead either. It seems clear that it was an early idea which has now fallen through.

In the UK the producers of Come Strictly Dancing floated the idea of bringing back an eliminated dancer too, but after the remaining contestants cried foul, that stunt fell through as well. Perhaps producers here are sticking closer to the UK format than they intended!

No other media seems to have picked up on this glaring omission from the nation's highest rated show. Perhaps they just don't remember?

Seeing as Today Tonight has made a habit of sensationalist stories about its own stable shows (cross promotion, cross promotion), maybe they might like to get an answer out of Seven for me?

Or better yet, just get Kate and Fifi to actually dance The Twist and write it off as a play on words.

Cruzin out of the White Room

Cruz has quit the White Room in Big Brother for the grand total of only $750.

In an effort to resolve a mexican standoff where nobody was budging, BB offered the housemates ten seconds to "take the money and run."

BB first offered the four $500. Nobody accepted it. But at $750 Cruz pressed the red button.

So it's official. A reality contestant can be bought off with no more than $750!

Cruz could have gotten a lot more than that. But he said boredom had set in and was first to quit.

Only one of the remaining three will enter the BB house which will take effect on Wednesday night.

In other BB news, the secrets of Hayley and Andrew's relationship and ex-boyfriend Billy were revealed to the housemates.

Australia's got Talent?

A twelve year old vocalist has been declared the winner of Australia's Got Talent.

Bonnie Anderson may be a diva in waiting, and with the leg-up of $250,000 and network adulation she wouldn't be out of place making star demands.

Anderson defeated a gum-leaf blower. Yep, a gum-leaf blower. Well, I guess he put the 'Australia' in Australia's Got Talent.

But seriously, is this the best we have to offer?

This is a show which harks back to the days of variety and vaudeville. Some of the acts were unapologetically old-fashioned with their bag of tricks: jugglers, magicians, sword-swallowers, singers and dancers.

As with any reality talent shows deserving contestants don't necessarily make it to the end, and while there is talent amongst the final bunch, not all of them have the point of difference upon which the show lays. Here was a chance to unveil some legitimate non-Idol performers.

But a gum-leaf blower? What showbiz engagements are going to pay his rent? And there are plenty of talented 12 year olds at shopping centre quests the land over.

I guess I thought there would be some eye-popping, staggering acts that never had an opportunity to strut their stuff. You know, that rare one-of-a-kind performer that deserves a real career.

But no, it seems we love kids singing songs that were meant for black divas in American musicals.

Maybe the show, fronted by the host with more exuberance than Kermit the Frog, just needs a new title.

Or a question mark.

David Spade for Neighbours

The news just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

David Spade from Just Shoot Me has agreed to an appearance on Neighbours.

Seems Spade has a friendship with actress Nicky Whelan who plays 'Pepper.'

"I don't know what I will be doing on it yet, but we will think of something fun,"said Spade.

With all the changes moving in to Ramsay Street it may soon be hard to recognise the same show (not that there's anything wrong with that).

No real change as Seven wins.

The more things change the more they stay the same. Seven has won its 9th week of official ratings this year.

It had a 27.4% share over Nine’s 26.6%, TEN’s 23.7%, ABC’s 16.4%, and SBS’ 5.8%.

In a week in which TEN made a pitch for ratings glory, Seven and Nine both lost ground but not enough to alter the status quo. And while TEN finished with its best weekly share this year it only edged up by .6%. Last year when TEN premiered the opening of Big Brother in the same week as The Biggest Loser finale it won its first ratings week in eleven years. Without Thank God You’re Here and a diminished interest in both its reality formats this year there was no chance of that being repeated.

Nevertheless The Biggest Loser will end the week as the number #1 show.

Nine's second position will be all the more frustrating given it won the week in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. But Seven ranking a close second and taking out Perth and Adelaide again cemented a win for Week 17 (and further underlines PBL's need to take the Perth affiliate from WIN Television).

Dancing with the Stars was again Seven’s top show. Seven’s other biggies included All Saints, Seven News, TT, Australia’s Got Talent and Desperate Housewives. Seven won Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

While Seven and TEN brawled for the same viewers on Sunday, Nine sailed through with a win. 60 Minutes was its top show followed by Sunday’s News, ACA, weeknight News, 1 vs 100 and McLeod’s Daughters. It also won Saturday.

Aside from Biggest Loser’s finale, TEN’s best were Big Brother, House, Law and Order: CI and a good public holiday win for its News on Wednesday. TEN won Thursday.

The ABC again caused headaches for the commercials with its Spicks and Specks / Chaser double. Next best was Curtin and Robin Hood.

Of concern this week are the following:
Big Brother is down on where it should be.
Nine’s News and ACA is dragged down by Bert’s Family Feud as Seven News is habitually taking the out the #1 show for the evening.
Nine needs to re-jig Tuesdays.
Ugly Betty has levelled out and may suffer from a BB leak.
8:30pm Wednesdays are under a renewed push and win by the ABC. House is been regularly toppled.
The Sideshow is only gaining modest figures in its Saturday slot.
