It's official. Battlestar surrenders.

The fourth series of Battlestar Galactica which kicks off in November, will be its last.

The 22 episode season promises to end with a bang, offering fans a "wild ride" in the meantime.

The decision was made by the show's creatives, executive producers Ronald Moore and David Eick.

The early episodes, which under Australian director Michael Rymer received critical acclaim, were screened on TEN but were bumped to a late-night timeslot following disappointing ratings (let's hope Torchwood fares better).

The US Sci-Fi Channel has denied rumours about the show's demise for some time but latest reports quote the producers as saying, "This show was always meant to have a beginning, a middle and, finally, an end."

Returning: Weeds.

Great to hear Weeds will be back on Nine in about a month's time!

The darkly comic drama from Showtime caused quite a ruckus with Nine's largely older audience for its supposed-endorsement of marijuana in the suburbs. It was also strong on four-letter words and sex.

But did that mean such liberations were without consequence? Of course not! It was the best new show over summer.

Meanwhile Series 3 of the drama gets underway in the US in late July.

In other news, Nine has confirmed ER is likely to return in about 2 months, but Men in Trees will be a summer filler.

TV Tonight will bring you and airdate in coming weeks.

Throughout its long history, several famous names have made appearances on the show, including Phyllis Diller, Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, Betty White, Usher, Charlton Heston, Erik Estrada and Dionne Warwick.

Producer Bradley P. Bell travelled to Oz with his mother, co-creator Lee Phillip Bell and actors Ron Moss, Katherine Kelly Lang, MacKenzie Mauzy and Kyle Lowder.

David Hyde Pierce outs

Well he's a wonderful actor but David Hyde Pierce needs better performance skills if he thought we would be surprised by his official coming out as a gay man.

The actor who plays 'Niles' from Frasier has mentioned his partner for the first time, in an article which acknowledges, "Pierce got to Los Angeles in the early 1990s when his partner, actor-writer-producer Brian Hargrove, wanted to write for television."

The line was buried deep in an article on CNN.

Ironically the butchest character in the sitcom, sports commentator 'Bulldog' was played by openly-gay actor Dan Butler, who outed himself years ago, including while the show was on-air.

Pierce has been performing in the stage production of Spamalot.

Hands up anyone who is actually surprised.

Teen trouble at Ten

TEN's new observational series Teen Fit Camp had a disappointing debut last night with only 735,000 viewers nationally.

Those are the kind of figures which saw Yasmine's Getting Married dropped.

In the same timeslot Seven had How I Met Your Mother / My Name is Earl on 1.2m / 1.3m and Nine got 1.2m for Getaway.

Last night's Big Brother also slipped under the 900,000 barrier coming in with 892,000. Unusually TEN was silent with its daily breakdown of figures in its prized 18 - 49 demographic.

TEN's evening share was 21.4% to Seven and Nine's 29% tie. It will try a repeat screening this Sunday at 12.00pm. But if it doesn't generate much interest next week these are figures they can't afford to sustain for very long...

Bye, bye Jamie.

It's a monumental day in Australian media as James Packer relinquishes control of PBL media and the Nine Network.

In reducing his shares to 25% Packer effectively closes a chapter of the legendary Australian family's media ownership.

His grandfather was a newspaper magnate, his dad a TV boss and now the heir apparent will focus on his gambling empire.

In just two weeks we have seen the CEO exit, the Nine logo 'balls' return and now the owner pass on his control.

I can't help but feel that accountants will now be running our oldest television network, who won't have any history or emotional attachment, other than to see the company in the black.

All of the above is a continued fallout from the death of Kerry in December 2005, together with changes in media ownership under Helen Coonan.

Watch now for on-air changes for the next 12 months.

[SBS/8:30pm] Big Love. Premiere. Hit HBO series Big Love will be screening on SBS at 8:30 pm on Sundays from 3rd June. Think having three wives is a dream come true? Meet Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton), a modern-day Utah polygamist who lives in suburban Salt Lake City with his three wives, seven children, and a mounting avalanche of debt and demands. The owner of a growing chain of home improvement stores, Bill struggles to balance the financial and emotional needs of Barb, Nicki and Margene (Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloë Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin), who live in separate, adjacent houses and take turns sharing their husband each night. While managing the household finances together and routinely sharing "family home nights," they try to keep simmering jealousies in check and their arrangement a secret - polygamy is illegal in Utah and banned by the mainstream Mormon Church. Adding to Bill's woes are a series of crises affecting his parents (Bruce Dern and Grace Zabriskie), who live on a fundamentalist compound in rural Utah, and his ruthless father-in-law, Roman (Harry Dean Stanton), the powerful head of the polygamist commune where his parents live. Bold, funny and wholly original, Big Love explores the evolving institution of marriage through a typically atypical family. Bill Henrickson has not been himself lately. The stress of opening the second of his "Henrickson's Home Plus" superstores has been getting to him, and he is struggling to keep up with the mounting demands from his wives and kids at home. Barb, the oldest of his wives, recently returned to substitute teaching, and she needs him to pick up some of the slack with the errands. Nicki, the second wife, wants more money to fix up her house - after all, Barb got to do hers. And Margene, the third wife, with two boys under two, is preoccupied with losing her baby weight - and with Bill's inability to get an erection with her. Things get even more complicated when news arrives from Bill's ne'er-do-well brother Joey that their father Franklin may be meeting his end. He makes a long-avoided return to the rural Juniper Creek Compound where he was raised, only to discover his father foaming at the mouth on the living room floor. His mother, Lois, couldn't pick him up, and she refuses to take him to a hospital ("it just brings more attention to us"), leaving it up to Bill and Joey to sneak him out when she leaves for work. Back in suburban Salt Lake City, Bill's oldest daughter Sarah unwittingly befriends the daughter of a state trooper - putting the family's secret at risk. Ben, his oldest son, wants a new gun. Teenie, the 8-year-old, calls her dad to ask him to get grub for her lizard. And Nicki's two young boys have been clamoring to be picked up and played with in the pool. Through all this, Bill manages to make it to the grand opening of his second store, but his celebratory spirit comes to an abrupt end with a surprise visit from Roman, the ruthless head of the Juniper Creek compound and Nicki's father. Roman helped Bill finance his first Home Plus store, and now he wants a cut of the profits on the second. Bill refuses, and the stalemate threatens their relationship - and possibly more. Adding to Bill's anxiety, the hospital calls with toxicology tests on his father. He's full of arsenic.

RAN Episode 1: Helen Tremain returns to the island, where she has spent the last five years as remote area nurse, with a strong sense that this place is now her only home. Her mother has died and Helen is the last of her family. But the island isn’t the tropical paradise she remembers. The substitute nurse was a disaster and the indigenous health workers are rebelling. And there’s Myrtle. Intellectually disabled, Myrtle is pregnant yet again to another anonymous stranger. She pleads with Helen to let her have the baby on the island. Even though it’s against the rules of the health department. Helen takes the risk that threatens her career - she will help Myrtle deliver her baby in secret. But she needs the help of Paul, the chief health worker who has gone walkabout. She finds him at his father’s home - the Island Chairman, Russ Fenton. Russ is a charming man who runs the island with an iron grip. He offers to straighten Paul out and volunteers his daughter, Nancy - home from her studies as a doctor - to get the clinic operational again. Helen can’t help but wonder what Russ wants in exchange. And so Helen, Nancy and the prodigal Paul prepare to keep Myrtle on the island for the birth. But the visiting doctor discovers their plan and sends a posse to the island. Myrtle is tackled in Russ’ front garden, forcibly sedated and helicoptered off to the mainland. Russ is furious. And Helen faces the sack.
