1 vs 100 in studio

Heading off to the shoot for 1 Vs 100 this Thursday, and expecting Eddie McGuire to emerge as the host. This hasn't been officially confirmed by Nine yet, but it's a widely-held view that Nine needs Eddie back on screen. He may not be everybody's favourite, but he's a good performer and Nine are going to need all their biggest guns this year.

The format is sort of Deal meets Millionaire. A wall of 100 people stacked on top of one another will share in prizemoney if a single contestant can't get the question right. Each time one of "the mob" gets a question right they are eliminated, and the contestant's prize kitty rises. There are versions of Millionaire lifelines too for when the questions get hard. And again, the ultimate prize is $1M. It's a pretty good format, and the gigantic set, which Nine will shoot at Central Studios, Docklands, certainly has the wow factor. The beloved Studio 9 at Richmond just wasn't big enough to build the thing.

Nine has a lot riding on this, particularly if Eddie is the host. If it fails (and I don't think it will) he will wear a lot of flak. Just having him back on screen will immediately move him back into the firing line for Sydney journos. Nine is also promising Show Me The Money another game show with dancing girls who each bear a different cash prize. In the US it was hosted by the shat-tastic William Shatner but it died instantly. So why bring this back and rest Millionaire? I suppose because 1 Vs 100 is already too similar? And who would host Show Me The Money? Bert would be a camp Shatner equivalent, but not if 20 to 1 is back in primetime (and they reckon it will be). Jules Lund is often mentioned. Yeah well Big Questions was hardly must-see TV so I wouldn't go there, guys...

You can see a preview of the American 1 Vs 100 with the eye-popping, Muppet Show set.

Will and Grace finale, finally.

Seven have advised me the final (double) episode of Will and Grace will finally air on Thursday Feb 1st at 7:30pm. Good news!

Pity the episode isn't very good, but I'll talk more about that later...

A dangerous liaison

Sheesh the claws are really out for Matthew Newton this year.

Ok the NYE antics were more fun for those in the studio than those watching at home. But now someone's gone and leaked a story that he allegedly assaulted former girlfriend Brooke Satchwell after a bitter break-up. If you look closely at the story you'll see this happened in October, when Brooke was shooting Dangerous.

So why is the story making the press now, the same week as Dangerous' debut? Seems a tad too coincidental....We've all reacted badly to a break up at one time or another. Matthew and Brooke both seem like nice kids. Here's hoping they can remain so.

Update: Newton and NOVA FM agree not to start a new radio show amid the media flurry. (Jan 15). More here.

Solitaire the only game on TEN News

Sydney Confidential picked up on a blunder by TEN's Adelaide Sports Presenter who had a rather unfortunate on air moment last week. Seems during a live cross to Natarsha Belling his PC screen behind him lit up, showing us just what he had been up to prior to the cross. No it wasn't porn (damn!), just a little Solitaire. Still it got Natarsha laughing, especially when a technician reached in to subtly flick it off.

Meanwhile TEN has announced several new changes to its News line-ups around the country:

Bill Woods is the new anchor of Ten’s Weekend News, Natarsha Belling will host Ten’s Morning News from Monday - Friday, Brad McEwan will join Sandra Sully on the Late News with Sports Tonight and AFL great Michael Voss is becoming part of the Brisbane News at Five team.

Finally I'm on TV tonight.

Who was that masked reviewer? Yeah if you didn't blink on Friday night while watching A Current Affair you would have caught yours truly. The gang at ACA rang me to see if I would give some comment on the sale of a Kath & Kim spinoff to the US. Well sure, why not? So there I was actually participating in one of the very shows I scrutinise! In this case it seemed harmless enough, and it was nice to be asked. I even got more airtime than the luvly Peter Timms at TV Week (well he's prettier).

My feeling on the spinoff is that it will be difficult to make it work, given the show is so intrinsically Australian in the use of the vernacular. The US has a checkered history with transporting overseas sitcoms. Some worked well (Sanford & Son, All in the Family, Three's Company, The Office) while others failed dismally. We all remember the Fawlty Towers ripoff. However, I have faith in Jane and Gina. Surely they would have sewn up a deal that gives them some creative control over the product.

It's not the first time an Aussie show has had foreign spinoffs. Prisoner had an American-made series following the success of the Aussie version on prime time TV there. And if you've ever seen the Argentinian version of Mother and Son you'll know that old ladies can drop oranges on coffins anywhere and it's still funny.

I was scrounging for inspiration when Ben at ACA asked me who they should cast in the US. Rosie O'Donnell as Sharon? Yeah great but she'd never do it. Kirsty Alley as Kim? Also great but also too old? Teri Garr as Kath... maybe.... I just gave up in despair and suggested Florence Henderson make a comeback. Kidding.

The transfer of The Office also by NBC, suggests that they will now make sitcoms that aren't necessarily studio bound multicam, laugh track formats. Here's hoping they maintain the fly on the wall Sylvania Waters style shoot.

While we're at it. let's not forget this is just a pilot. The Americans make pilots on a daily basis. It's no greenlight yet, but I hope Jane and Gina can make this work...

Meanwhile.... jeez guys did the camera hafta be so close on my ugly mug? Lol....

Trouble with TEN downloads

Seems Ten's downloads are not running as smoothly as possible, which isn't a good sign when the network wants to embrace internet platforms in 2007. I loved the idea of new episode downloads, but not if it's riddled with technical problems. CNET says they gave up in despair citing conflicting technical advice, annoying installations blah blah blah.

They've aptly titled their article
10 Things Wrong with TEN's download service. Ouch. Read more...

Queer Eye axed

Well tzjush mah mouth. Bravo has finally gone and announced the demise of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. It was still going?

Carson will no doubt live on with his inimitable quips, and America is big enough to suck up the other four ...so to speak. Jai is already pencilled in for You're The One That I Want.

I doubt they will be missed. Sure they served a purpose, defining the metrosexual amongst straight men. And for once gay men were heroes rather than comic foils or tragic characters. But five years was about four too long.
