[SBS/10:00pm] Sex‘N’Pop. Sexual Healing – Black Music And Sexuality. Ever since the fifties, when the raunchy performances of Elvis and Little Richard changed the music scene forever, sex and pop music have been inextricably linked. This five-part documentary series examines the complex relationship of sex and pop music, asking questions like: to what social contexts is pop music confined? What music turns audiences on and why? How do gender roles change and how does pop music loosen peoples’ inhibitions? Few styles of music are sexy, and no other kind of music has had a more profound influence on global youth culture over the last 15 years than Hip Hop and R&B.; Despite this unparalleled triumph, Hip Hop and R&B are harshly criticised – sexism, chauvinism, homophobia and the glorification of violence are all obvious elements of much contemporary Hip Hop. This episode includes the rhythms of James Brown and R. Kelly, of Kurtis Blow and Snoop Dogg, people whose music helped enable the sexual revolution. [ABC/8:30pm] Kylie Showgirl Homecoming Tour, screens on ABC TV, Sunday March 4 at 8.30pm. This 90-minute uninterrupted television event was filmed at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena in December 2006. Kylie Showgirl Homecoming Tour is a completely revamped version of the Showgirl Greatest Hits Tour, and captures Kylie's excitement at being able to share a truly unique concert experience with Australia. “This is one of the most enchanting looking shows you will ever see - with the work of arguably the world’s three best choreographers, beautiful stage and lighting design, and Kylie’s finesse over the whole project. I’ve recorded literally a hundred live broadcasts for TV, but this was far and away the most exciting I’ve ever been involved with,” said producer Paul Clarke (Love is in the Air, Long Way to the Top). The production also features new, show-stopping costumes from the world’s leading designers including Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Dolce & Gabbana, Gareth Pugh, and up-and-coming Perth-born designer, Richard Niccoll. The famed Lido of Paris lent Kylie's 13 dancers spectacular headdresses and classic feather costumes, never before seen outside France. “Kylie is much-loved and admired by so many Australians, so we are very pleased to be able to bring this fabulous show to Australian audiences”, says Marena Manzoufas, ABC TV Head of Programming. This is tricky. This concert shot in Melbourne is a triumphant return, but like the Fever tour it’s also William Baker excess. Under the feathers, the Hindu puppet and the channeling of Eartha Kitt in a homoerotic gymnasium, somewhere is our Min. What’s Bollywood got to do with lyrics of Confide in Me, a classic song that works on its sumptuous string hook alone? As a result this celebration of hits (too many of which are drawn from the euphoric-less Body Language) plataeaus early on leaving the audience patter, when Kylie truly connects with her audience, as the highlight. That said, it’s a visual and aural feast, including some gay tributes to Judy, Madonna and Yazz.
