I WATCHED a bit of that new Shaun Micallef show Newstopia on Wednesday night. So that makes one of us.
Micallef has never really been much of a crowd-pleaser, and I can see how some of his material might require some degree of – I was going to say indulgence but that's not it . . . a different type of thinking, possibly. But if you're happy to just go along with him and let him do his thing, the rewards are there. He's a funny guy. He just looks funny, the way he moves his face a lot – although now that I say that, it occurred to me on Wednesday night he'd had a bit of smoothing toxin injected into the vicinity of his forehead.
It's less corrugated than I recall. I realise it's like pointing out somebody's got mascara on, suggesting there's been a cosmetic procedure performed, it's so very, very common these days and who cares. But still. Micallef? Maybe I'm wrong and it was the lighting.
It was an interesting juxtaposition, I'd just watched The Chaser. Pretty similar shows really.
Micallef raced through a lot of material, it was good, they're obviously trying a few things out. They had a pretty amusing skit on Al-Qaeda training camps – an inane pair from Ultra Dynamic Training International came in to do a workshop with these guys in masks, their names were Jim and June. It was so on the money.
Both The Chaser and Newstopia gave that footage of John Howard twitching weirdly during the worm debate a big run.
Do you know what I'm talking about? I thought he was about to have a seizure.
I kept waiting for Kevin Rudd to yell out, what more proof do you need? Howard reached somewhat unsteadily for his glass of water and it was over but it was so strange.
I was glad in a way they talked about it, because it was one of those insane moments where you go, did I just see that?
Micallef was the winner anyway. His was the funnier treatment I thought.
They played the footage, he did that thing he does where he kind of puts one hand up under his chin and goes hmmm, before he posed the question, I wonder what possible explanation there could be for that?
And then they cut briefly to vision of a hand chopping up lines of white powder with a credit card. Very, very funny. Maybe you had to be there. Which you should try to do next week. He could do with our support.
That makes at least 2 viewers of Newstopia this week! I like this show but I have always loved Shaun Micallef's stuff. I think I have a weird sense of humour though.. it's good to know someone else is watching.
