Australian Idol Watch

If early publicity pics are anything to go by this should be the seating order of judges on the next Australian Idol.

The return of Dicko has created a dilemma for producers, potentially stuck with two nasty judges. Putting the ever-supportive Marcia between them seems a wise move, but assuming the direction does not alter, it allows Kyle the last word.

Another photo in the advance publicity pack shows the same seating line-up in the audition room.

In truth Dicko can be just as enthusiastic for contestants as he is critical. Idol may also choose to allow only 2 or 3 judges to comment on contestants in much the same way as judges on Dancing with the Stars. We'll have to wait and see.

The show launches on Sunday August 5 with a 90 minute audition pack from Brisbane and Darwin. On Monday its Adelaide and Perth.

Of the 35,000 auditionees there are 136 finalists (Sunday Aug 19) culled to a Top 24 (Monday Aug 20). the following week sees live semi-finals on Sunday - Thursday nights with 2 contestants making it through. The Wild Card show follows with the Final 12 revealed on Monday September 3rd.

Idol also has a new, purpose-built studio at Fox Studios, which is revealed in September. Not surprisingly producers are calling this their, "best top 24 in five years."

An Idol: Up Close and Personal special will also return.

Both John Foreman and Erena Clark return this year. Stylist is Sheridan Tyler.

The Top 136 breaks down as:
ACT: 2 (1m / 1f)
NSW: 49 (23m / 26f)
NT: 3 (2m / 1f)
QLD: 15 (7m / 8f)
SA: 10 (4m / 6f)
TAS: 1 (1m)
VIC: 35 (18m / 17f)
WA: 21 (9m / 12f)

First elimination: Holly Weinert
Second elimination: Brianna Carpenter
Third elimination: Lana Krost
Fourth elimination: Mark de Costa
Fifth elimination: Jacob Butler
Sixth elimination: Ben McKenzie
Seventh elimination: Daniel Mifsud

Seeing as Dicko is back, they should ditch Kyle. At least Dicko has some cred with the music business and knows what he's talking about, Kyle's level of expertise is spinning CDs on breakfast radio and is having a relationship with a Popstars contestant, and considers that making offensive remarks gives him some sort of "talent". His little tanty on Big Brother might have got some extra viewers tuned into BB but I don't think it will do any favours to Idol. Let him go.

have they done the all-in-one week semi-finals before? I didn't watch it last year but i recall from previous years each semi final was on a sunday with results given on monday, similar to the top 12 or whatever it is these days.

Last week was the first year they did a full week of semis. It worked very well as a ratings winner and in generating buzz.

Still no REAL album from last years winner, makes it a little jokeable doesn't it?

I'm certain that an album will be released once Damien is satisfied with his work, and I'm glad that he's not selling out just for the sake of releasing an album unlike some of the other Idol contestants.

And I agree with the top poster on ditching Kyle. He has no discernable talent whatsoever, and nobody gives a damn what he thinks.

Damien Leith released a new single yesterday and his album is out next month. He's been doing a lot of promotion on radio over the past couple of weeks for it. For the producers, there really was no rush this year to get an album out because they made an absolute fortune with Damien's live album....a very clever marketing move which resulted in them moving far more units than Kate and Casey's releases combined.

After Kyle's offensive performance on Big Brother recently, he should be "boned" from Idol altogether!
I won't be watching Idol until they get to the final 12 anyway... the rest is just crap.

well i think idol shouldn't even have judges, i mean what is the point when the australian public votes anyway, i mean what are they there for, just to boost ratings and personally i think they learn scripts before they go on air, it is the same thing every year mr potato head kyle says something about someone's weight when he should be on the biggest loser and marcia loves everyone, mark with his hasbeen words, i mean the guy is a reject from the 70's he should have stayed there and dicko with his usually comments about weight but for me it is more about the judges then the singers, the only people that have credibility are marcia and dicko and lastly kyle should just stick to radio i mean for a guy that just sits in a room and plays music and thinks he is king shit he knows absoulutely nothing about music, why because he has a little record label with the only act on it is his girlfriend, come on
