Eurovision: Germany: "Women Rule the World."

And here is my personal pick for Eurovision 2007!

This swingin' tune from Roger Cicero is big and brassy and without even knowing what the lyrics mean it totally works. Cicero is smooth with his vocals, delivering a hip, Michael Buble-like performance that would have Sinatra toe-tappin'.

Amid all the EV hands-in-the air songs this is likely to be remembered as "that swingin' big band song", creating a point of difference for Germany.

"Frauen regier'n die Welt" means literally "Women Rule the World."

The lyrics of the song are topical and pay homage to the female gender who commandeer men with a mere look or glance. Personally I've always felt men rule the world, but women rule the universe (think about it!). Cicero will sing the final verse in English. It even includes a reference to:

They build up Beckham and topple Clinton, Without even starting a political party.

First Review: Masters of Horror 2

This anthology series coming to the Showtime Channel will feature brand new stories by legendary directors.

First up is
the offering from Joe Dante, "The Screwfly Solution." Best known for The Howling and Gremlins, Dante's direction is like an out-of-control trainwreck in need of a decent script editor. Jason Priestley stars in a story about a virus which causes men to kill women. As it sweeps the globe there are confusing messages about aliens, and a shift from the hero's journey to a role played by Kerry Norton. In a supporting role is Elliot Gould, but he all but disappears without explanation for most of the story.

More satisfying is "Family" directed by John Landis. He has previously directed The Blues Brothers, Animal House and American Werewolf in London.

In this delightfully-bent tale, the new neighbours of George Wendt ('Norm' from Cheers) harbors a deep, dark secret that shows all is not quite right in suburbia. Borrowing a little black comedy from Desperate Housewives, at times it is crude and definitely in-your-face! It's great to see Wendt in a villainous role, and nice to see Landis back at the screen.

Each week Showtime will screen one story, including new offerings from John Carpenter and Tope Hooper.

Masters of Horror 2 premieres with 'Screwfly Solution' at 8:30pm Fri May 18 on Showtime.

Thomas outs himself

Details are still sketchy at this stage but TV Tonight has it on good authority that Big Brother's Thomas has outed himself as bisexual.

Thomas has so far come across as a nice guy in the house, and his towering build and good looks haven't done him any harm, either.

As this news broke on Friday and the production shoots at least 24 hours ahead, we shouldn't expect to see this on air until at least Sunday.

Eurovision's Semi-Final has now taken place in Helsinki but this site won't be telling you who made it through to the Final. You'll have to search online for that.

And Aussie viewers can also participate in a no-prize vote being hosted by journalist Alistair Birch, who is in Helsinki. Birch has an extensive blog running on his website, thankfully with a spoiler-free section too.

Alistair will also be talking to TV Tonight in our fourth Eurovision preview airing today from 5- 6pm on JOY 94.9. You can hear the special online at www.joy.org.au. Spoiler free!

And if you are wondering who is in the photo here, it's Spanish entry Nash, whose song "I Love You Mi Vida" is a catchy little number. If they dress like this they'll be sure to get plenty of votes!

NB: No comments with winners spoiled will be approved.

BB: Intruders confirmed

When in doubt, send in more?

With disappointing ratings this year Big Brother is turning to its bag of tricks. And unfortunately their choice is to just flood the house with more people.

TV Tonight has confirmed Intruders will enter the house in a Special to air Tuesday May 22 at 7:30pm.

Unfortunately Big Brother has boxed itself into a corner this year. Under increasing parliamentary, media and community cynicism about previous stunts it is difficult for Producers to orchestrate moves that deliver shortcut solutions. So it is more dependent on the housemates to create storylines of interest.

Pivotal to this is BB's casting choices, which this year have been criticised for mirroring previous seasons of partying 20-somethings. BB has also placed much emphasis on romantic storylines which have worked well with couples like Peter & Christina, Marty & Jess, Peter & Turkan, Jamie & Katie. But are viewers bored with safe options?

One of the other problems is that viewers may be overwhelmed with the number of characters (I can barely pick one blonde from another). Since sending in the original housemates BB has already added 5 extra housemates, and is now set to send in Intruders. And the move so early also diminishes a mid-season spike when they are usually introduced.

Last night Big Brother had 878,000 viewers.

But if BB is to attack the ratings spiral it must send in Intruders who are social opposites to these twenty-somethings. Romance is one thing, but the basis of all drama, scripted or unscripted, is conflict. We need housemates who are older, from a different class and life experience. Does anybody remember how The Hothouse was addressed when all those young couples suddenly had to deal with Pete & Tina from Adelaide? They nearly won the thing and they plugged viewer disinterest.

BB send in somebody over the age of 50, or preferably 60! Then we'll watch!

The scheduling of the Intruders special also means a Special scheduled for Wed May 23 (previously May 16) is now dropped.

Keep up with latest scheduling via our Big Brother Watch.

Russ, what a gal.

Wait a minute. That guy in the UK entry for Eurovision looks familiar.

Yep, Russ Spencer, the blonde boy in Scooch, may also be familiar to viewers of the reality parody Boys Will Be Girls which aired here on Pay TV. In the show, Spencer was one of three former pop band members who thought they were forming a new boyband for a reality series. But once cast their pop managers told them they would have to drag it up as a girlband.

The series tracked their shock, anger, and eventual costume fittings, training and rehearsals as they tried to pass themselves off as The Honeytraps. Their one single reached #23 on the UK download chart.

Spencer rejoined his former Scooch group to take on Eurovision, eventually winning the UK vote with "Flying the Flag."

Eurovision: Russia: "Song Number 1."

Girls kick the flow!

Ok enough of the dud songs. Time to hear something good. Here's the Russian entry by girl group, Serebro. Part Britney, part Sugababes, it's a grinding little song with a driving riff. Admittedly it's a little derivative but it's pure pop.

Lyrics for this one include Oh! Don't call me funny bunny, I'll blow your money money, I'll get you to my bad ass spinning for you, Oh! I'll make it easy honey, I'll take your money yummy, I've got my bitches standing up next to me!

Don't expect the lengthy dance break to be incorporated into EV which has a 3:00min maximum, and of course only 7 performers total.

Russia is already through to the Final. Go girls!

Tomorrow I will post my favourite song, just prior to the big event.
