ABC signs Russell's Rabbitohs

The ABC is making a six part series on struggling South Sydney Football Club, to be called South Side Story.

The team has overcome its woes to carve out success under its new directors, Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court, who sank $3.8m into the team.

Airing later this year, the show will give "an insider's glimpse into the club - from dressing sheds to the boardrooms, the terraces to the public bars - it is an in-depth look at the staggering change of fortune in this the club's 100th season."

Press Release:

The intimate goings-on of the South Sydney Football Club, which has overcome extinction to fight for survival under new high-profile owners Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court, will be captured in a documentary series, the South Side Story, for ABC TV.

Beyond Productions started filming last week at the beginning of the 2007 football year and will continue to follow the team throughout the season. The 6 x 30 min series will screen on ABC TV later this year.

South Sydney Rabbitohs are one of the most well-publicised rugby league clubs in the country, having been financially overwhelmed by the juggernaut super-clubs and fighting every inch of the way to survive.

With three wooden spoons in the last four years, 2007 was shaping up to be another bad year.

But all that changed when the club's new owners, Crowe and Holmes a Court, invested $3.8m this season to bolster its ranks with a new coach and five star recruits. Crowe and Holmes a Court have staked their reputations and their money on the team's performance.

Mikael Borglund, Beyond Production's Managing Director said "This series follows the club through all of these crises and shows how a football club can define a community, provide a heart and a pulse, and give a community a sense of identity."

Stuart Menzies, Head of ABC TV Documentaries said " The South Side Story is an insider's glimpse into the club - from dressing sheds to the boardrooms, the terraces to the public bars - it is an in-depth look at the staggering change of fortune in this the club's 100th season."

Twirling Toddlers try their luck

You can tell Easter non-ratings are around the corner. There's some unusual offerings on the horizon.

Nine has Strictly Baby Ballroom coming.

The UK special promises, "the weird and wonderful world of juvenile ballroom dancing. Based on exclusive access to the child couples and their parents, we follow their lives for a year in the run-up to the most prestigious major ballroom competition of the season, The British Juvenile Ballroom Championships in Blackpool."

I'm hoping the 50 minute doco resembles a Christopher Guest mockumentary but I'm not holding my breath.

Strictly Baby Ballroom airs 7:30pm Wednesday April 4 on Nine.

Lost celebrity dogs home

I hate to sound like a broken record, but TEN has again made a change (its fourth) to upcoming episodes of Celebrity Dog School.

Yesterday I told you it was being relegated from Saturday nights to 12:30 Sunday afternoons as of March 25.

Well that still holds true, except TEN has now decided to just go ahead and make this Sunday its last.

Go get the rifle we gotta put this mutt down.

This is despite a press release for forthcoming programmes as recently as Tuesday which still shows the programme airing in the first week of April.

So is it the axe? Effectively.

I can't help but wonder if news about Larry Emdur preparing a new show with Seven has caused a bit of a re-think.

Pussycats meow for Ten

TEN has picked up new US reality show Pussycat Dolls: Search for The Next Doll.

The series premiered earlier this month on the CW network under the eye of producer McG, and seeks to find a new female performer for the pop group.

TEN will screen it after the Rove Live premiere at 9:30pm on Sunday April 1.

The all-female troupe started as a dance act in 1995 but released its first single, "Don't Cha" in 2004.

Their other hits include "Stickwitu" and "I Don't Need a Man."

The Naomi Winfrey Show?

One minute she's on Dancing with the Stars.

The next she's being talked about for Seven's new morning show.

Now it seems Naomi Robson's shooting a pilot of her own Oprah-style show.

According to reports, Seven's David Leckie felt he owed her the courtesy of a pilot, given her loyalty to the network and for making Today Tonight so successful (for those who can't remember it had floundered under various hosts including Stan Grant and Jill Singer).

Robson had made noises about wanting a chat show after TT ended. But if Seven has a new morning show is there room for this. And if Nine's Catch-Up is demonstrating this is no easy feat should Seven go there? Maybe they think they can do better, and who knows, maybe they can.

In the late 90's every female who could string a sentence together was auditioned for a pilot along the lines of Oprah, Donahue and Rikki Lake.

But many found one fundamental difference to the American format. Aussie audiences were shy to comment. If such a format is to succeed, any Q+A segment may need a big re-think.

Sarah Murdoch is finishing her Today Show stint on Friday March 30, and will be replaced by newsreader Kellie Connolly until Jessica Rowe returns, probably in May.

But could Sarah be headed for Seven's new morning chat show, rumoured to be titled Brunch?

The other name that has been mooted for this project is :

Naomi Robson.

Nine's Nine's director of news and current affairs Garry Linnell thanked Murdoch saying, "It was a big challenge for her to step into the high-pressure atmosphere of presenting three hours of live television every weekday morning.''
