New Neighbours credits

The new opening titles to Neighbours have been revealed in a sneak peek video on the official site http://www.neighbours.com/videos/

Together with an updated theme, the overall effect is an optimistic, contemporary bayside tapestry together with a 'photo booth' montage. Characters can be seen jumping off piers, rowing boats, sitting by the old Brighton bathing boxes and dining outdoors.

The featured sequence also contains snippets of scenes that will follow next week including a wedding and a car crash.

TV Tonight also hosts a First Review of the "new Neighbours" and a picture gallery here.

First Review: The Dame Edna Treatment

Is there anything new that Dame Edna can tell us we don't already know? Probably not.

Does it matter? Definitely not.

The housewife megastar could read a shopping list aloud and I'd be perfectly mesmerised. In fact, she'd probably fill it with innuendo and tell us how it illustrates more about ourselves than was ever thought possible, such is the precision of her performance.

After a long break from TV (Ally McBeal notwithstanding), the iconic Dame Edna Everage (the comic creation of ex-pat satirist Barry Humphries) is back on British telly in The Dame Edna Treatment. Set in her own ITV studio/spa, Everage is a colonic hostess adored by an audience suitably attired en masse in white coats. The set is festooned with flashy lights, stairways, chat-show chairs, Edna statues and gladiola trimmings. Replacing evergreen but glum bridesmaid Madge Allsop is Edna's daughter, the plump and stone-faced Valmay. She's lumbered with electronic tags on each ankle, "so we always know how far apart they are".

The show's format is wide-open, giving Barry Humphries the opportunity to do what he does best -hold court. Celebrity interviews are interspersed with filmed sequences of guests in flotation tanks and being massaged. After Nine re-shuffled the eps for Australian viewers, the 'first' show (which I haven't seen) has Shane Warne, Alan Alda and Sophie Ellis Bextor. More exciting is the promise of Matt Lucas, David Walliams, Susan Sarandon, kd lang, Shirley Bassey and Deborah Harry later in the series. In cameo roles are Patrick Stewart, Ronnie Corbett, Mr Bean and Richard O'Brien.

And of course Sir Les Patterson also has a few drooling guest spots with the likes of Bollywood bombshell Shilpa Shetty and Carmen Electra.

Glamazon Sigourney Weaver looked stunning in her classy chat with Edna, deflecting requests for a fifth Alien movie. Poor Mischa Barton, although presenting as inoffensively sweet, is virtually a deer-in-headlights, which makes for a perfect Edna guest. Unlike Parkinson, who allows his guests to take centre-stage, the interviewees under Edna's scrutiny are effectively playing the straight man to her razor-sharp wit. American guests often struggle with this 'complicated' task, generally unable to comprehend what's hit them; or, more foolishly, they sometimes try to compete.

The intense Michael Bolton takes it way too seriously, despite Edna introducing him as having had eight hits.... "on his website". When he duets with Edna on the forgettable 'Time, Love and Tenderness' he must think he's at Carnegie Hall. The showman in Humphries all but abandons the lyrics and melody with consummate ease, and nobody but Bolton seems to care.

The package works effortlessly for Dame Edna. And as I watched a spirited Martin Sheen donning the purple wig and the gaudy frock I was reminded that Everage is many things, but a drag queen isn't one of them. She's fifty years in the making and she's ours. She's Edna.

The Dame Edna Treatment premieres 7:30pm Saturday on Nine.

Brooke Satchwell forgives Newton

Actress Brooke Satchwell has accepted an apology from Matthew Newton according to an article in today's Herald-Sun.

Satchwell was at the centre of a domestic abuse case involving Newton, which this week saw a conviction against the actor quashed in a Sydney court.

In her statement Satchwell says, "Many things defy comprehension until they are experienced.

"This has been an extremely difficult time in my life, from which I am endeavouring to heal and grow. Despite the pain and sadness I feel at the destruction of a loving relationship and moments yet to be enjoyed, I bear Matt no malice and am relieved that he has recognised and addressed these unfortunate issues.

"I wish him only happiness and success in the future."

Satchwell, currently filming Nine's Canal Road, went on to urge men and women to report domestic abuse.

Seriously shameless plug

Many of you know my work in TV commentary, but I also dabble in theatre as another form of writing and creativity. One of these projects is now taking off to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

Seriously: Pet Shop Boys. Reinterpreted was staged last year drawing upon the amazing songs of the legendary British duo as a "popera" with five singers, a grand piano and a string quartet. It had sellout performances and rave reviews, including one from Variety in the US which said, "the impact is electrifying ....an original and resounding success." The Age said "it's a sin to miss."

It has since won the support of composers Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, who we met in April, and so we are off to Edinburgh for August. Tomorrow night (Fri 20th) there is a highlights fundraiser at the National Theatre in Melbourne with the original cast (Maria Mercedes, Tania Doko, Paul Ross, Anthony Costanzo, David Gould) and guests Eddie Perfect, Supergirly and Reuben Krum. Gold Logie winner John Wood is hosting. If you're in Melbourne come on down for a great night!

Maria Mercedes sings "Left to my own Devices" / Cast sing "Red Letter Day."

There is a second trailer on our official website, plus more ticketing info: www.seriouslypsb.com

So as you have probably deduced, this site won't be as heavily maintained through the month of August.

I will still be supplied info and posting when I can but it may be a bit more erratic!

And no, in case you're wondering the title has nothing to do with Channel Ten!

Airdate: Shark. Returning: Las Vegas

UPDATE: Shark will now not premiere on July 30 following a late amendement by Seven. Instead a double episode of Criminal Minds will screen. The move is likely to a response to the competing finale of Big Brother. Shark is now due for a later launch in August.

Seven's new drama Shark will kick off at 9:30pm on Monday July 30.

In a risky move for Seven, the show will premiere on the same night as the finale of Big Brother, currently scheduled to end at 9:15pm -but when has that ever finished on time?

It would certainly be in TEN's interest to stretch the final out to 9:45pm.

James Woods stars as "a charismatic, supremely self-confident defence attorney, who after a shocking outcome in one of his cases - and a personal epiphany - brings his cutthroat tactics to the prosecutor's office."

Meanwhile, Las Vegas returns to Seven at 8:30pm Thursday August 2 with a double episode. It kicks off with Season 4's, "Father of the Bride Redux" guest starring Jewel and introducing Cheryl Ladd as a regular.
