Returning: Jericho. Gone: Veronica Mars.

Jericho's nuclear drama will now be seen on Friday nights from April 27, and Veronica Mars appears to have been struck by the fallout.

Jericho will screen at 9:30pm following the return of Big Brother Friday Night Live.

TEN famously launched the series simultaneously with the US last year. Despite a strong premiere here, the show then levelled out to a more modest following and
did not return when CBS screened new eps in February.

TEN will now pick up Jericho with the episode "The Day Before" which screened in the US on February 21.

It's a bit odd that the drama didn't gain a higher profile timeslot on another weeknight ... say Mondays or Tuesdays at 9:30pm?

As a result of Jericho's return, Veronica Mars looks to be dropped from the current schedule after April 20. 11 more episodes have aired in the series with another 5 yet to come.

There has also been speculation that the series was axed in the US.

CGI Park coming to Nine

Nine's new Primeval series from the UK will premiere at 7:30pm on Saturday April 28.

The series is designed as an action-adventure for younger and family viewing. Nine had some success last year with Prehistoric Park on Sundays, a rather silly mix of documentary and drama.

Similarly, this mixes live actors and CGI dinosaurs but seems more clear on its target audience and that it is a work of fiction, unlike the other.

Prehistoric creatures burst through a tear in time and our team find themselves running for their lives from the hungry jaws of a flesh eating Gorgonopsid.

Nick Cutter, Evolutionary Zoologist, finds himself confronted with the subject of his studies in a way he could never have imagined. Prompted by the enthusiasm of his graduate student Connor Temple, Cutter and lab technician Stephen Hart go to investigate strange animal sightings in the Forest of Dean. Close by, Abby Maitland, a zoo animal handler, is discovering the forest is home to a very strange pet. Could a lizard picked up by a young boy be an entirely new species?

Claudia Brown, Civil Servant, hopes Cutter will dismiss the sightings. However, he's reluctant to oblige. There's more than professional intrigue behind his investigations; eight years ago his wife disappeared from the heart of the forest.

Cutter invites Claudia to join the search, and they find a petrified Abby face to face with Scutosaurus – a giant beast from the Permian Era of 250 million years ago. Abby's convinced the Scutosaurus is “pure veggie”, so what's behind the sickening sight of a dead cow hauled high into a tree?

The young boy's tales of a monster at his window confirm Cutter's worst fears. A savage Gorgonopsid – one of the most dangerous predators of the Permian Era – is on the loose. Only Stephen's bravery manages to stop the boy and his teacher becoming its next meal.

Where are these creatures coming from? The Scutosaurus leads the team to the answer: a shimmering in the air, a distortion in the light and suddenly the Scutosaurus disappears before them. A rip in time – an anomaly – that leads back to prehistoric times. Cutter is determined to make the trip through, convinced that the answer to his wife's disappearance could lie on the other side.

Government hatchet man Lester is reluctant to allow it, but decides the information is more valuable than Cutter's life, and sanctions an exploratory mission. Cutter and Ryan (a Special Forces soldier) find themselves standing in a Permian desert, but become unnerved when they discover Helen Cutter's camera buried in the sand. Is there a chance she's still alive?

Nine offers CSI online

Channel Nine will join TEN in offering downloadable episodes of American dramas as they air.

CSI will be available for download the same night as it has aired via its msn website.

But there is a small cost of around $2 per episode.

TEN currently offers free downloads of Supernatural, and available before they air.

According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, a Nine spokesman agreed that viewers wanted to watch shows at a time that suited them. Funny I thought part of the reason they were suing ICE TV was to dissuade time-shifting....

Well it's good to see some movement from Nine on this, which up until now has only offered the Hat Show (aka McLeod's Daughters).

As I see it diehard fans will have probably downloaded shows from US torrent sites for free as they are, but that doesn't mean there isn't a market for Aussie networks to offer legal, low-cost downloads as well. Just as Napster died, people were happy to pay through for iTunes if it was comprehensive, legal and low cost.

The fact that Nine is making some move forward on this is certainly a move in the right direction.

[UKTV/8:30pm] Who Do You Think you Are? Julie Sawalha. Julia Sawalha is best known for her roles in Absolutely Fabulous and Pride and Prejudice. She has a very interesting and mixed background. Her father, Nadim, came to England in the 1950s from his native Jordan, where he met and married Julia's mother, Roberta. Julia had always felt quite strongly influenced by her father's side of the family, so decided to start her quest by investigating her less well known maternal links. Roberta's grandmother was Gladys Dubock, and as a consequence of her surname assumed that there was a connection with France, possibly of Huguenot extraction. (The Huguenots were a group of Protestant refugees who first came to England fleeing from persecution in France in the 16th century.) Yet there was no proof for such a connection - a common problem for many people make assumptions based on the 'sound' of a name. So Julia's first task was to build her family tree, using certificates and census returns at the Family Records Centre, London. After tracking her family back six generations, she eventually located William Dubock, a grocer and cheesemonger in the 1881 and 1871 censuses. However, he is listed as a silk weaver in the 1861 census - one of the most common professions amongst the Huguenot community that established itself around Spitalfields and Soho, London. Indeed, further research provided a link back to Peter Dubock in the early 18th century, confirming that for four generations her family had been silk weavers. The change in profession was forced upon William in the 19th century, when the French invented a superior loom and were able to mass-produce silk goods far more cheaply than their English counterparts. In 1861, a trade ban on French goods was lifted and the market was immediately flooded with cheaper goods, driving thousands of weavers out of work. The fortunate ones were able to switch trades to survive, hence William became a grocer. Many others found manual work on the railways or the docks, but the less fortunate starved, or ended up in the workhouse. The area around Spitalfields quickly descended into a slum. Confirmation of Julia's Huguenot roots was eventually proved via Peter Dubock's grandfather, Daniel Dubock, who fled from a small village in Normandy called Luneray in the 17th century. He was one of nearly 200,000 Huguenots who fled after the French King Louis XIV passed a decree in 1685 banning Protestant worship in France and stripping Huguenots of their civil rights. This meant they were unable to inherit property, their marriages were invalidated resulting in their children being declared illegitimate and they had to bury their dead in secret. No wonder so many sought a new life overseas. Having found out the history of her mother's side of the family, Julia then investigated her paternal lineage. Nadim's parents, Jochim and Julia senior, had lived in Jordan all their lives and married in 1920s at a time when society was changing. Jochim's family were Bedouins, tribal people who lived a nomadic existence in the desert. Yet Julia senior (maiden name Marar) ran a hotel and a string of businesses in the capital, Amman. It was an unusual position for a woman to hold and one that later won her recognition from the king of Jordan. This was also quite a change from her Jordanian family's traditional roots. The Marar family came from a small rural town called Madaba, 30 miles from Amman, which was also the tribal home of Jochim's family. At the time, your tribe was a more important social grouping than your family, though things subsequently changed as Jordan became more Westernised. Julia discovered that Julia senior's mother originally came from a different tribe, the Oozates, who had been nomadic farmers in the south for centuries, following the same pattern of life until their move to Madaba in 1880.
