Into Great Silence is the first film ever allowed to be made about life inside the Grande Chartreuse. Founded in the 12th century, the Carthusians are among the most rigorous of all Catholic orders, and the monks mostly live alone in their individual cells. In an overwhelmingly noisy world, the Carthusians seek God in solitude. No music except the chants in the monastery, no interviews, no commentaries, no extra material. Changing of time, seasons, and the ever repeated elements of the day, of the prayer. A film to become a monastery, rather than depict one. A masterpiece of contemplative filmmaking that will take viewers to a place of absolute calm, this beautifully filmed documentary creates a meditative space as profound as that surrounding the monks' daily routines.

[SBS/8:00pm] Short Stories is a four part series about life, death, love, family, identity and hope, which follows the extraordinary and compelling life experiences of four Australians who are all short-statured. Short Stories considers the everyday life experiences of four key characters - Amanda, Ammie, Rosa and Nathan - their physical complexities, as well as trying to have a baby, growing up in a split family, finding a partner and grappling with tragedy. Part of a small community in Sydney’s working class western suburbs, and linked through their association with the NSW Short Statured Basketball team, the documentary focuses on the characters’ lives rather than just their difference. Short Stories demonstrates that being short-statured adds another dimension to the lives of Amanda, Ammie, Rosa and Nathan. Their lack of height intensifies their experiences and makes their stories more compelling. Filmed in Australia, with additional scenes in the United States and Singapore, Short Stories is a moving and entertaining glimpse into the lives and communities of four short-statured people. This story is a stirring and heroic account of a determined young woman, Amanda, who wants to have a baby in the face of incredible odds. Both Amanda and her partner Damian are of short stature and, as a result, there is a 25% chance of conceiving a “double-dose” baby (with two versions of the dwarfism gene, resulting in death before infancy.)

"The Visit" is told as a film within a film. A murderous scheme develops. Directed by Pedro Almodovar and stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Fele Martinez. Encores? We got Encores!

Encore. int, noun, verb. a demand, as by applause, for a repetition of a song, act, etc., or for a performance of a number or piece additional to those on a program. - Dictionary.com

Encore. verb - the facility by which a programme can source a wider viewing audience regardless of whether anybody actually has called out to see the thing or not. - Australian TV industry.

Repeat. verb. to go through or undergo again - Dictionary.com

Yes regardless of whether anyone actually calls for them again, networks are making more and more liberal use of the word 'Encore.' Shows that haven't managed to attract expected numbers are re-scheduled in low key timeslots to build up a following.

This week Nine has an Encore of The Lost Tribes at 5pm Saturday. It's not a bad show as factual entertainments go, but c'mon, a repeat is a repeat, guys.

And Seven is re-screening Sunday's Ugly Betty at 2:30pm Saturday for all of you who were glued to the Red Carpet Arrivals or Big Brother (admittedly they haven't used the word 'encore.')

A few weeks ago Seven had a What About Brian marathon on Saturday to try to lift its lowly audience figures.

But you know the drill. We've had a slew of Encores over the last 18 months. Several have been scheduled before the first run even airs. How does the audience cry for more if they haven't seen the thing in the first place?

Eurovision: Greece "Yassou Maria"

Is that Ricky Martin?

No it's Sarbel, Greece's answer to the Puerto Rican firecracker. He shimmies, he sparkles, he wears pants way too shiny. And he does that belly dancer thing with his head. He's very, very serious when he sings Yassou Maria too. The lyrics in this lil toe-tapper are Shake it up, shake it up,
There you go - oh ohh, Yassou Maria, Ai, ai, ai, there she goes, Maria! Yassou Maria!

Hmm didn't Ricky sing about Maria too? Oh well. He's so 2001, right Sarbel?

Sarbel is already through to the Final so you're expected to know all the moves by Sunday. Just follow the girls, shake your hips and don't think of Ricky!

Denyer comments off key

Grant Denyer has managed to offend various groups during a radio interview with comments that are being called racist and homophobic.

Denyer, explaining he was recovering from a big Logies night told NOVA hosts that "I'm feeling like I had sex with a black man right now."

You can hear the comment here.

It's very awkward for the host given the new series of his karaoke show It Takes Two includes both Ernie Dingo and Anthony Callea.

He later added, "I'll be the host who looks like he's been riding a horse for a week."

Opposition multicultural spokesman Laurie Ferguson said the comments were deplorable and could be referred to the Australian broadcasting watchdog ACMA.

Ghassan Kassieh from the Spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby said the comment reinforced a stereotype of black men as aggressive and predatory. "This is a totally unacceptable comment, and should never have been made on air," he said.

On Today Tonight Denyer apologised saying, "Anyone who knows me knows I wouldn't go out to offend. It was a wobbly joke, made way too early in the morning."

On the Logies Red Carpet Denyer was happy to chat on TV Tonight for JOY 94.9FM. I'd be surprised to learn he was indeed homophobic, and while the comment sounds like it was in poor form, let's not blow things out of proportion.

After all in the right context that comment could also be considered a compliment.

Rove from NYC

Rove is set to broadcast two episodes in July from the US, one in New York and one from Los Angeles.

The elaborate move is seen as away of maintaining the show as a prime Sunday night choice for TEN viewers.

The last episode of Rove was a disappointing 863,000, the #65 show of the week. It was beaten by CSI's 1.64m.

And this week the show won't even get underway until 9pm due to the Big Brother double eviction (Gretel thought she had let the cat out of the bag last night, but TV Tonight tipped you off last Wednesday!).

Rove was great during his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, no doubt he will have some juicy guests in the American episodes.

Jessica's $1M Handshake

Radio reports today that Jessica Rowe will walk away from the Nine Network with at least $1M.

The source said she was likely to receive a three year payout of her reported $500,000 salary - putting the amount as high as $1.5M.

Rowe and Nine parted ways on Saturday night, less than 24 hours before the Logies.

Generally, media reports like this are wide of the mark, but I hope Rowe is placated by a hefty payout. Nine dealt with her dreadfully, sniping behind her back, publicly supporting her, promising she would return and then dumping her. Throughout it all Rowe behave professionally. It's hard to believe this would have happened during Kerry Packer's day, but under James and his management this was a mess from start to end.

The timing of her departure is also curious. Did Nine hope the Logies news would smother Rowe's axing? Did somebody within Nine time it destabilise Eddie even more?

And where will Rowe turn next? Obviously as a new mum time is on her side. But with both TEN and Nine now behind her there is a shrinking list of options.

Maybe it's time for Foxtel?

[SBS/10:00pm] The Thin Blue Line. “No American film made during the entire decade was as significant in blurring the boundaries between what's real and reel, and in demonstrating the remarkable impact a "small" movie can have.” Emanuel Levy. Billed as “the first movie mystery to actually solve a murder”, this gripping and memorable documentary investigates the 1976 murder of a Dallas policeman. Offering a variation on the prevalently ‘Hitchcockian’ ‘Wrong Man’ plot, Oscar-Award winning director Errol Morris’ The Thin Blue Line, screens in the Hot Docs timeslot on SBS Television, Tuesday, May 8 at 10.00pm. Enhanced by a hypnotic score from renowned composer Philip Glass, it treats the fascinating, polemic and true story of the arrest and conviction of Randall Adams for the murder of Robert Wood. With its use of chillingly visceral re-enactments and interview material, it is credited with overturning Adam’s conviction, which yielded the death sentence. Morris became an impassioned advocate of Adams, released after 11 years and at one point, only 3 days from being executed. Some local lawyers believe police and prosecutors wanted to wrap up the case quickly, in order to preserve Dallas County's conviction rate - the highest in the State. Authorities also wanted to avoid the public embarrassment of a reopened case. The Thin Blue Line’s accolades include Best Documentary 1988, as voted by the New York Film Critics Circle, the National Board of Review and the National Society of Film Critics; Best Movie 1988 by the Washington Post Survey of 250 Film Critics and by the Mystery Writers of America (Edgar Award); and Best Foreign Film (Golden Horse Award) by the Taiwan International Film Festival. Morris’ crusading anti-capital punishment film documents miscarried justice - the hidden motives, the withheld testimonies, the questionable interpretations of facts. Each interview elicits more dilemmas than it can possibly solve until the "truth" is decidedly muddied.

Eurovision : Denmark "Drama Queen"

All week I will have a special focus on the build-up to Eurovision, the good, the bad, and the completely camp. There is simply nothing else like it (well Mardi Gras, Miss Universe and The Footy Show sort of come close)

Let's kick off with Denmark's entry, DQ with "Drama Queen." The song is suitably discotheque in a bad sort of Stock, Aitken and Waterman way. Actually they were geniuses, cancel that comment. The chorus includes I'm your drama queen tonight, All my troubles are out of sight, When the lights are on I will be your shining star. Spice Girls? Donna Summer? Maybe S Club Seven....

There's 2 boys and 2 girls with fans dancing beside DQ. Did I mention it's a drag act? Let's let DQ do the rest of the singing for herself. And if you think her outfit screams Hello Dolly you'd be right.

DQ, who appears in the Semi Final on Saturday night, is no doubt hoping to replicate the success of Dana International from Israel. Good luck, girlfriend!
