[ABC/8:00pm] Choir of Hard Knocks. Premiere. Take one musical director, and a group of homeless and disadvantaged people. Get them together once a week, and let them sing. The result is Choir of Hard Knocks - an inspirational five-part series that premieres on Tuesday May 15, 8pm on ABC TV. In this uplifting series ABC TV follows the journey of Jonathon Welch's Choir of Hard Knocks. Jonathon, a former Opera Australia tenor, will bring together those who have no voice in society, and get them to sing. In just six months they'll stage the performance of a lifetime. The choir, Jonathon hopes, will give a sense of purpose and opportunity to disordered lives, providing these choristers with the opportunity to give back to society. But most of all he hopes they will have fun! There are no humiliating auditions. Jonathon will work with whatever voices he gets. He wants the choir to be open to anyone who can describe themselves as homeless or disadvantaged and is willing to give it a go. The day of the first rehearsal dawns. Jonathon has no idea who, if anyone will turn up. He is delighted with the turnout, and although the singing is less than perfect, he's pleased because he can see he has raw talent to work with. But it will be an exhausting and emotional journey for these choristers.
[ABC/10:00pm] IOU: Robert Helpmann. IOU is a three-part series in which contemporary artists from a wide variety of disciplines pay homage to the influence of three towering creative luminaries. IOU explores the life and work of three major Australian artists - Robert Helpmann, Judith Wright and Robin Boyd. We examine each artist's legacy through their works and from accounts by contemporary artists. Sir Robert Helpmann (1909 - 1986): the great Australian dancer, actor, director and choreographer. As one of Australia's most flamboyant and controversial theatre figures, Helpmann's life and work are honoured in this documentary with interviews with Australian choreographers, ballet dancers, playwrights and actors who have been influenced by his work. In a career spanning 70 years, Helpmann achieved international fame for his Shakespearean roles at the Old Vic opposite the likes of Vivien Leigh and Katherine Hepburn. IOU: Robert Helpmann also pays tribute to Helpmann's role in two of the most exquisite ballet films ever made-The Red Shoes and Don Quixote. Renowned choreographer and Artistic Director of Sydney Dance Company, Graeme Murphy joined the Australian Ballet Company in 1968. After discovering the wealth of dance outside Australia, he left the company in 1971- but not before having had a colourful dose of Sir Robert Helpmann. "There were times when he was standing at the bar in very sheer tights right in front of you and….. with a very soft blue rinse through the hair and looking fabulous and I just thought I'm the luckiest person on earth because this is a piece of history. I knew then at 17 that this was a presence to be reckoned with." Graeme Murphy.Interviews also include: writer Justin Fleming, former ballerina Lucette Aldous, dancer Colin Peasley and actor Tyler Coppin.

[SBS/8:30pm] Hot Politics. On SBS Television on Tuesday, 15 May in the Cutting Edge timeslot is Hot Politics. This documentary investigates the political decisions that have prevented the U.S. government from confronting what is one of the most serious problems humanity faces today. Hot Politics goes behind the scenes to examine the forces behind the U.S. government‘s failure to join in the climate change agreements that much of the rest of the world has chosen to adopt. It probes the impact of a well-financed energy industry campaign which challenged the broad scientific consensus on the human causes of climate change, in an effort to stall federal regulation of the carbon emissions that might impact their companies. Hot Politics details the frustrations of federal officials like Eileen Claussen, one of Clinton's chief international climate negotiators, who resigned from her position in 1997 as she felt the Clinton-Gore administration had dropped the ball by failing to push for Senate ratification of the Kyoto climate treaty. She says, I thought it was dishonest to go and negotiate a treaty that you had no hope of getting ratified in the Senate…Economist correspondent Vijay Vaitheeswaran reveals, by the time Bill Clinton's administration was finished, we saw greenhouse gases so much higher than they were at the beginning of the decade of any president. During the 2000 presidential campaign, George W. Bush outflanked his opponent, Al Gore, on the issue, promising to work toward a mandatory "carbon cap," or ceiling on greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. Bush appointed former New Jersey governor Christie Todd Whitman, who also backed mandatory carbon caps, as his EPA administrator. But, as Hot Politics reveals, Whitman's efforts to implement the new caps were derailed at the White House, apparently at the insistence of Vice President Dick Cheney. Soon after, the Bush administration withdrew any U.S. support of the Kyoto protocols and then began a process of stifling the dissemination of key findings by government scientists about climate change. In my thirty-some years in the government, says top NASA climate scientist James Hansen, I've never seen constraints on the ability of scientists to communicate with the public as strong as they are now. In interviews with climate scientists, environmental activists, and political insiders including Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), former U.S. Senator Tim Wirth (D-Colo.), as well as Whitman, Claussen and others, Hot Politics investigates why the U.S. federal government lags so far behind the rest of the world in responding to global climate change.
[SBS/10:00pm] The Fog of War. Startlingly forceful – an extremely intimate, sympathetic and provocative personal biography, as well as an illuminative audit of human fallibility. One of 2003’s best films. Brett Simon. Sometimes dubbed the "architect" of the Vietnam War or “Mac the Knife”, Robert McNamara is shrewd, charismatic and self-assured when explaining the "fog" of ignorance and bogus strategies that surround war and blind the powers that be. Winner of the 2004 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, and boasting an original score by Philip Glass, Errol Morris’ The Fog Of War screens in the Hot Docs timeslot on SBS Television, Tuesday, May 15 at 10.00pm. It presents a disquieting account of the Red Scare period from US Defence Secretary, and Vietnam political chess master, Robert McNamara. With its meticulous film-making and montage, archival footage, stills and graphics; The Fog Of War is imbued with an eerie clarity and uncanny timeliness. Alarming facts are disclosed, including that, in the years from 1961 to 1968, the U.S. came "within a hair's breadth" of nuclear war with the USSR three times. McNamara also reveals that, while the CIA was convinced in October 1962 that Cuba had missiles but not warheads, Fidel Castro informed him 30 years later that, not only were there many nuclear warheads on the island at the time, but that he recommended that Khruschev use them, knowing full well that, as a result, Cuba would be wiped out. It emerges that the 1945 U.S. firebombing of Tokyo was so egregious that the 'brutal, belligerent' General Curtis LeMay conceded that, had the Americans lost the war, those responsible for the raid may have been vulnerable to war-criminal charges. Furthermore, he admits that, rather than being a potential seedbed for the spread of much-dreaded Communism, Vietnam, long occupied by the French, was actually fighting a war for the independence that had thus-far eluded it. The impediment to achieving peace in Vietnam was the legacy, which carried over from the '50s, and which considered Vietnam in strictly geopolitical Cold War terms. Reason, McNamara concludes, is not enough to create order in the world; emotions and human nature often supersede good sense. Resonating painfully with the current political climate, is his caveat that the U.S. should refrain from going into a war unilaterally.

First Mr Denyer. Now Mr McManus.

Another week another slightly inappropriate gag about gays?

This time, from another nice guy, Rove McManus.

On Sunday's show he had a special Mother's Day edition. After chatting about what Mothers want for their special day, Rove joked that all dads want for Father's Day is to find out their son isn't gay.

After the misfired gag from Grant Denyer last week, we again have a rather silly attempt at humour which probably does more damage than the humor it is supposed to elicit.

Neither gag are indictable crimes, and the gay community needs a sense of humour like the rest of society.

But if sections of the media are going to lambast Grant Denyer for his clumsy comment then someone should also point out to Rove that it was a silly and unnecessary comment, particularly when he has such a young audience.
Rove has also proven himself to be very cool and very inclusive in the past. More of this, and less of that please...

New dramas: The Falls. East of Everything.

The bumper year for Aussie drama continues with two new dramas beginning shooting outside Sydney this week.

One is Ten's murder mystery The Falls starring Georgie Parker, Geoff Morrell, Vince Colosimo, Rhys Muldoon and Andrew McFarlane. It's set in the Blue Mountains and centres around Parker's character running a B&B.; They've named her character 'Joni Ferguson' which will be pretty amusing to any Prisoner fans....

The other is the ABC's East of Everything starring Richard Roxburgh, Susie Porter, tom Long and Gia Carides. Roxburgh plays the son of a hippie who returns to Byron Bay to unravel his past.

Press Releases:

Network Ten has announced that filming of its telemovie The Falls will commence in Sydney this week.

Boasting a stellar Australian cast led by Georgie Parker (The Society Murders, Irresistible, All Saints) with Catherine McClements (Mary Bryant, After the Deluge, The Secret Life of Us), The Falls is a murder mystery set in the Blue Mountains.

When JONI FERGUSON (Georgie Parker) buys a run down bed and breakfast in the Blue Mountains, she and her teenage son ZAC (Tom Green) have no idea that The Falls is a place where secrets will be unearthed, skeletons rattled and murder is in the air.

The ensemble cast also features Geoff Morrell (Marking Time, Grass Roots), Oliver Ackland (Jessica, Always Greener, Pirate Island), Ella Scott Lynch (Monkey Puzzle, The Silence, Charlotte's Web), Vince Colosimo (Lantana, BlackJack), Rhys Muldoon (BlackJack, The Secret Life of Us, Big Sky), Heather Mitchell (Jessica, The Society Murders), Leon Ford (Stepfather of the Bride, Go Big) and Andrew McFarlane (Playschool, Through My Eyes).

The Falls is written and produced by Tim Pye (BlackJack, Stupid Stupid Man, Small Claims) and Cathy Strickland (McLeod's Daughters, Something in the Air). It will be directed by Peter Andrikidis (Mary Bryant, Jessica, BlackJack) and executive produced by Ron Saunders (Spellbinder).

"We're incredibly excited that The Falls is now in production" said Tim Pye and Cathy Strickland. "We've got a wonderful cast, a great crew and the opportunity to tell a story which is distinctly Australian. None of this would have been possible without the unfailing support of Network Ten."

Head of Drama, Network Ten and Executive Producer Sue Masters said: "From the outset - we've loved this project (which we always envisaged with Georgie Parker as JONI). Tim and Cathy have created a wonderfully fresh spin on the mystery genre. And at TEN, we're delighted that such a fantastic cast have been attracted to such warm hearted and strong storytelling".

The Falls is a joint venture between Pacific & Beyond and Spider Ink for Network Ten produced with the assistance of the Film Finance Corporation Australia and the New South Wales Film and Television Office. All3Media will distribute the film internationally.

---

Richard Roxburgh (Blue Murder) and Logie-award winning Susie Porter (RAN) will head a stellar cast in the new ABC TV drama series East of Everything which begins filming in Byron Bay on June 4.

Richard and Susie will be joined by Tom Long (SeaChange, Heroes’ Mountain) and Gia Carides (My Big Fat Greek Wedding).

East of Everything, a 6 x 1 hour series, has been created by writers Deb Cox and Roger Monk. Deb was the co-creator and writer of the enormously successful Australian series Seachange, Simone de Beauvoir’s Babies and After the Deluge; Roger Monk wrote and co-produced the award-winning feature film Walking on Water, and was a writer on The Secret Life of Us.

Melbourne producer, Fiona Eagger (CrashBurn, Mallboy and the top-rating telemovie The Society Murders) has been their long-term collaborator and championed their vision to bring this regional series to fruition.

Series directors are Stuart McDonald, whose credits include The Secret Life of Us, SeaChange, MDA and Two Twisted, and Matthew Saville, director of the acclaimed new feature film Noise and the television series We Can be Heroes, The Surgeon and The Secret Life of Us.

Producer, Fiona Eagger, said: “When Deb and Roger came to me with the idea for East of Everything I jumped at the opportunity to work with them to create something really special for Australian television audiences. It is wonderful to have such a fantastic creative collaboration.”

ABC TV Head of Drama, Miranda Dear, said: “It’s terrific that Deb is working with ABC TV again. It’s an absolute testament to the strength of the team and story that such an outstanding cast has been attracted to the series.”

The central character in East of Everything is Art Watkins, a man who has
spent most of his professional life as a travel writer, wandering the globe in search of paradise. But when his mother dies, Art is summonsed back to the town of Broken Bay and the neglected resort he grew up in with his ‘hippie’ parents at the eastern-most point of the Australian continent. Once more, Art is forced to decide whether to deal with all of life’s glorious complications – or to flee – and as he attempts to unravel the mess of his past, he comes to the ironic realisation that his best hope of happiness is to resurrect the ‘paradise lost’ he left behind.

East of Everything will be produced in association with the Australian
Broadcasting Corporation, Film Finance Corporation Australia, in association with the New South Wales Film & Television Office.

TT targets ACA crash.

The current affairs slag-off war heats up again tonight with Today Tonight suggesting A Current Affair was instrumental in causing a crash in a Melbourne tunnel.

It claims to have new witnesses and new evidence from a second truck driver which it will speak to exclusively tonight.

Press Release:

Tonight we speak to the Melbourne truck driver out to prove that it was a Channel Nine crew that caused a near fatal crash between his truck and a Mercedes in the Domain Tunnel.

In an exclusive report, Today Tonight reveals new evidence and new witnesses and looks at the incredible vision that Victoria Police are being asked to investigate.

Now, a second truckie has come forward saying that A Current Affair's crew and their female driver had been driving crazily in front of his truck before the dramatic accident. He talks about the dangerous driving he saw and how when he drove past the crash, he recognised the same silver vehicle leaving the scene.

This key new witness believes the Channel Nine crew were continually driving through the tunnel simply to obtain the terrifying vision.

It premieres at 8.30pm, Monday 14 May on ABC TV.PART THREE - SEAN'S WAR: Dock worker Sean McSwain (Anthony Hayes) is elected as the State Representative for the MUA, just as scab labour begins working on Berth 5 at Patrick's Webb Dock in Melbourne. It becomes his responsibility to run the protest at the Melbourne docks. It is a mission that will test everything he has as an organiser, a mate, and a man. This forces Sean directly up against Tony Tully (Jack Thompson), a second-generation wharfie, who is used to the Union's old ways of fighting. He appeals against the decision. The full bench of the Federal Court hears the appeal. For the first time in history, the decision of the Court is televised live around the country, as Justice Wilcox announces in favour of the Union. Corrigan appeals, this time to the highest court in the land. With everything hanging on this outcome, the High Court of Australia rules for the Union. Corrigan has no choice but to attempt to reach a negotiated settlement with the Union. The MUA workers return triumphantly to work. In the eyes of the public, the story is all over. Memo to the ABC: 6 - 7 weeknights? Zzzzzz.

If there's an award for dullest timeslot of the week, the hour between 6 - 7 pm weeknights on the ABC would probably walk home with the prize.

Seriously, has the ABC given up on this timeslot altogether? It's the start of nightly prime time, but for more than a year the ABC has made no aggressive attempt to revamp this black hole of television.

While the commercial networks focus on news, current affairs and soap, the offerings from the ABC vary from night to night.

This week the ABC is offering Message Stick, Talking Heads, Time Team, Great Artists, The Cook and the Chef, Grand Designs, Hidden Treasures with Betty Churcher, No Job for a Lady and Can We Help? They vary from interview, documentary, arts, cooking, British comedy and local panel shows. As programming these are akin to a lucky dip, and remember they are sandwiched in between children's / teen shows and the news.

That's almost three different audiences in just over one hour.

It's as if the ABC is still licking its wounds over the demise of Something In the Air over five years ago. The broadcaster famously took the plunge into nightly local soap. It was hugely expensive, and despite mild critical acclaim, ultimately did not connect with the audience. Alas, the days of Bellbird ended generations ago.

After that the ABC launched five nights of locally produced chat and panel shows, largely out of South Australia and WA. Three of these, Talking Heads, The Cook and the Chef and The Collectors remain. It also tried George Negus Tonight, which had a modest but loyal audience. After it dropped him and there was considerable outcry, Negus was embraced by SBS.

We've had everything from Keeping up Appearances and Doctor Who to a lazy susan of lazy ideas.

Even SBS has revamped its World News this year, but the ABC acts as if nobody cares about its 6 - 7pm hour. Why can't we have some decent alternative viewing choices to news, current affairs, Neighbours and Simpsons repeats?

Perhaps visitors of this site would like to suggest a way for the ABC to kick off evening viewing.

What ABC programmes would you like to see screened between 6 and 7pm? Try to lean towards shows that have multiple seasons....
