"Exhausted" audience loves their yard

Last year Nine pulled the pin on Backyard Blitz telling producer Don Burke that it felt the genre had been "exhausted."

Last night it aired the first of six episodes that were already in the can.

The show won its timeslot* as almost 1.3m viewers tuned in.

So much for a tired audience it seems.

In fact it had a higher pull than any episode of The Lost Tribes the show it replaced on Nine. Burke and host Jamie Durie will likely find this a bitter irony, both no longer part of the Nine Network.

A figure of 1.28m is very good these days, (National Nine News had the same average audience last week) and likely to see the show wind up in the week's Top 20 programmes. While shows are being dropped all around us, any programme that finishes in the Top 20 should be considered precious to the number #2 network.

Meanwhile, Durie is developing Best Backyards for Seven and pursuing his luck with Oprah in the US.

* Where Are They Now was not broadcast in Adelaide. It pulled 1.22m.

Bert back for another round?

When I saw Bert Newton sign off on his final Family Feud episode a few weeks ago he thanked all his crew and farewelled the audience. But he also slipped in a plug to tell us Feud would be back in July. Say what?

Sure enough, there are episodes scheduled at 5pm from Monday July 2.

The first of these is a first-run ep, featuring footballers.

The remaining eps until Friday July 6 also feature warring groups, but they are repeat episodes.

It remains unclear why Nine would schedule these so soon after a public dropping, but given Bert had indicated the move in his final show, this is obviously no last minute decision.

Nine's website tells us eps will air between August 6-10 and September 3-7. Why?

Kindly link to this website when sourcing or posting in messageboards, thanks!

CBS embraces blogging

CBS has embraced blogging as a promotional tool, contrasting a slow uptake by Australian TV networks to enable internet users to help do the work for them.

CBS site currently hosts a "bloggers toolkit" with user-friendly codes and URLs that enable webmasters to add licensed clips to their own sites.

By freely providing clips and resources, CBS is finding its new programming widely promoted across fan-based websites.

"We want to empower our audience to be creative and deepen their experience with our content by allowing them to share and embed CBS-provided clips to their blogs, Wikis, widgets, community sites and whatever else gets thrown our way," said CBS Interactive president Quincy Smith.

In Australia the commercial networks are still focussed on revamping their own official sites and online partners at the expense of missing out on promotional opportunities that can be built through blogging.

Since launching in February, TV Tonight has passed 95,000 hits a month. Yet only a handful of smart individuals in Australian TV networks have recognised the power of blogging, with some key decision-makers actively blocking the flow of information.

TV Tonight applauds the move by CBS to jump on board with empowering its audience and gaining strength from the benefits of blogging.

In the US, blogging software firms Automatic, IPTV firm Dave Networks and VideoEgg, a video ad supplier to over 70 online communities, are among those joining a line-up that already includes the likes of AOL, Microsoft, Joost, Bebo, Brightcove, Sling Media and Veoh.
