Foxtel sponsors Nine Footy

As the dust settles on AFL programming for 2007, the fallout becomes more and more bizarre.

Foxtel will now co-sponsor Channel Nine's AFL programs, running ads for its own footy shows.

Yesterday I told you that Seven and TEN had refused to carry Foxtel football ads which boasted it had more live football than any network, running matches ad-free. The two commercials which had paid big bucks were furious with the claim.

So now Nine and Foxtel have stitched up a deal which will see the same ads running during The Footy Show, The Sunday Morning Footy Show and Nine's new Monday programme Footy Confidential.

Eddie McGuire, Nine Network Chief Executive Officer said: "We are delighted to announce this sponsorship. Our AFL programming is an integral element of our offering to audiences and we believe that Foxtel’s sponsorship will be a successful marketing partnership."

I'm surprised he was so polite. Nine is famously unhappy at Seven and TEN securing the AFL rights, so to direct viewers from them to Foxtel (of which PBL is a part-owner) is a nice free kick.

Foxtel CEO Kim Williams said, "The beauty of this sponsorship is that it allows us to talk to dedicated AFL fans as well as a broader audience who tune into Nine’s AFL programming for its entertainment value."

Brian Walsh said: "Foxtel is delighted to partner with the Nine Network as presenting sponsor of the 2007 AFL Footy Show and the network's other signature AFL programs. The Footy Show continues to set the benchmark for sports/variety television in Australia and we are proud to brand the Foxtel name across its marquee."

Ouch. These are the same guys that are in bed with Seven and TEN? I've seen friendler punch-ups down at the local little league.

What a mess.

The Footy Show returns 9:30pm Thursday March 15 on Nine.

Hinch to tell all

Sixty Minutes has another big interview this weekend, at least that's the way it's being promoted.

The rest will really depend on what is revealed.

Derryn Hinch is finally telling all on his illness which in 2006 saw him lose weight dramatically and sent the rumour mill into overdrive. Until now he has been famously silent on the matter.

Updated March 4th: So now we know.

Hinch admits he has cirrhosis of the liver from years of alcohol, and possible cancer. The outlook is grim with a delicate operation due within weeks. Read more.

Are you ready for Wilfred?

Sometimes a premise is so darn bizarre you could be laughed out of an Executive's office if you tried to pitch it. Yet, for all its boldness, it manages to get made and find an audience.

Wilfred might prove to be one of those.

The title role is a guy in a dog suit, and a pretty sad one at that.

Wilfred is a new SBS Australian comedy series based on a short film by filmmakers Jason Gann and Adam Zwar.

The ads currently screening on SBS show a cantankerous (and that's being nice) man / dog abusing people who cross his path, and generally pissing off a lot of people. You can't help but wonder, is this for real? Never let it be said SBS doesn't take risks!

SBS' Press Release follows:

Adam can hardly believe his luck when he's invited home by Sarah – a gorgeous young woman he met at a Powderfinger concert. This joy is quickly turned on its head when he meets Wilfred - Sarah’s cantankerous canine who is determined to make him feel as uncomfortable as possible. This might be cute and everything on the first night. But when Adam and Sarah start a serious, live-in relationship, Wilfred turns up the torment meter in his quest to drive Adam out of the house. Eventually, Adam is forced to question his sanity after spending whole weeks embroiled in an ongoing psychological war with a nine-year-old dog who thinks he's five. So how hard can it be to make friends with a dog? That depends on the situation… and the dog.

Episode 1- There is a Dog
When Adam is invited back to Sarah’s place after meeting her at a concert it all seems too good to be true, until he’s introduced to Sarah’s dog, Wilfred. Wilfred offers him a bong and quickly sizes up Adam as a lightweight. Wilfred encounters Adam again during the night has no problem coercing him into making nachos.

Adam awakes from a bad dream, unsure of exactly what he’s got himself into. When Sarah leaves to do some shopping Wilfred explains to Adam the source of Sarah’s unhappiness. Adam tries to help by cleaning up the yard but a discovery spooks him into a panic. His attempt at escape is interrupted by Sarah, who easily convinces him to stay for dinner.

Wilfred premieres 10pm, Monday 19 March on SBS.

[ABC/9:35pm] Sex Bomb. Of all the propaganda campaigns of World War II, the most bizarre and sinister was the work of the Political Warfare Executive on behalf of the British government, under journalist Sefton Delmer. He was king of the nasty. Delmer had witnessed Germany unleash a new weapon - sex propaganda, and volunteered to beat the Nazis at their own game. He specialised in using pornographic propaganda to undermine the morale of German troops, spreading false stories about German sexual predilections, and ruthlessly spinning dark tales of necrophilia, paedophilia and venereal disease amongst the Nazi high command - but he paid a terrible personal price. The tactic caused a split in Churchill's government, but German propaganda minister Josef Goebbels cursed Delmer as his most effective enemy.

[Nine/7:30pm] Getaway. Getaway goes wild, including Shamu the world’s most famous killer whale.
[Nine/9:30pm] RPA. We meet 26 year old Nathan who faces every males nightmare and Jacob, a 27 year old basketball player who arrives at RPA with an apparent popped patella.

[Seven/8:30pm] Lost. Further Instructions. You won't believe who guest stars. The polar bear is back too, Locke rescues Eko from the cave. Locke has some flashback in a commune where they deem him “amenable for coercion.” Desmond joins the remaining gang.

See fists fly when Heather Locklear happens to run into her supposed best friend, Denise Richards, just after her very publicised split with Richie Sombora.

Ross the Intern

Many TV-O-Philes would be familiar with Ross the Intern.

Ross is a regular guest on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. He's funnier (and campier) than Carson Kressley.... and that's pretty hard.

This week Ross went to the Vanity Fair Oscars After-Party. He met Ellen de Generes, Beyonce, Gwynneth Paltrow, James Woods, Madonna (sort of), Abigail Breslin and P Diddy.

Think that's funny? Ross meeting Steve Irwin last year was even funnier.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno screens on the Comedy Channel weeknights at 11pm. You can also check the guest list by adding 24 hrs to this list here.
