Challenges to Brooke Astor's Will

Brooke Astor's funeral service will be held tomorrow afternoon at Saint Thomas Church in Manhattan, but legal papers have already been filed contesting the doyenne of NYC philanthropy's will. Family and friends have been arguing about the legitimacy of Mrs. Astor's final will and testament for a while now, after major adjustments were made to the document in 2002 - a time when Astor was allegedly suffering from reduced competency - as well in the following years.

FUNDRAISER: It's the 3rd Annual Summer, Sex and Spirits cocktail and shopping extravaganza. Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC), in conjunction with Brooklyn Indie Market join forces for the fundraiser, "an evening of mixing and mingling with retail therapy!" There will be $4 drink specials, 1/2 price sangria pitchers, a deejay and a giveaway...we're also guessing everyone will walk away with at least one free condom.

Fleet Week 2007 is Here!

The Navy's ship has come in - as well as the ships for the Marine Corps and other military aircraft - today is the start of Fleet Week! It's a great time of the year, when people get to visit various ships and aircraft AND admire men and women in uniform. Ships are docked at Pier 90 in Manhattan and at Stapleton Pier in Staten Island and are open to the public. Here's a Fleet Week Schedule of Events (PDF) and some highlights:

Pencil This In

EVENT: Charles Ray, who is thirty years deep in the art world, will be at the New School tonight for a Public Art Fund talk. The leader of the "conceptual realism" movement with a "lively, self-deprecating sense of humor" will discuss his "virtuoso craftsmanship" and his depiction of "familiar elements of everyday life and modern art in disarmingly altered ways."

Greenwich Village Gunman Caught on Tape

The NYPD has revealed more details about last night's horrible shooting the Greenwich Village. The police released a photograph of the gunman, David Garvin (pictured below), who apparently was a regular DeMarco's customer and was asked to leave a few times. Garvin fatally shot DeMarco's employee Alfredo Romero Morales, then shot two auxiliary police officers before being killed by other responding police officers. His roommate worked for DeMarco's, but had been fired a few months ago; a resident said that Garvin was an ex-employee, but that has not been confirmed.

Noteworthy Television This Week: Heavy on History

American Experience: New York Underground (Monday, 9:00 p.m. WNET 13) Channel Thirteen re-airs this 1997 documentary about the building of the New York City Subway.
