  • Spurs 92, Knicks 80: Depleted as they were, the Spurs took care of the Knicks. They were without Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili but still found a way at home. Zach Radolph, so critical during the Knicks' three-game losing streak, was held to 15 points on 7-of-18 shooting. Jamal Crawford managed 28, but it wasn't enough. An 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter did the Knicks in. They play in Memphis on Wednesday night.

  • Flyers 3, Islanders 1: Uniondale's Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum rightfully hosted this Veterans Day matinee, but things didn't go that well for the home team. They put 28 shots on goal through the first two periods but still entered the second intermission trailing, 1-0. Things didn't get better after that. Trent Hunter scored the lone New York goal, but that came with his team down by two. The Flyers added an empty-net goal for good measure. Colin Powell was in attendance and saw an impotent power play. The Islanders went 0-for-8 and missed on two 5-on-3's. That's no good.

Teens Charged with Hate Crime in Long Island Killing

2008_11_lucero.jpgYesterday, prosecutors said seven teens who attacked and stabbed Marcello Lucero (pictured) in Patchogue were specifically targeting Hispanics. ADA Nancy Clifford said, "In their own words, 'Let's go find some Mexicans to ---- up." Six of the teens were charged with gang assault as a hate crime, while one was charged with manslaughter as a hate crime and held without bail; they all pleaded not guilty. Newsday reports that Latino advocacy group Hispanics Across America may file a civil suit against the teens' parents, "Parents that teach their children hate are just as responsible as the kids who commit the crimes." And Lucero was remembered as a generous person who was excited about Barack Obama's presidential win; his brother said, "He saw it as a chance for people with brown skin to be seen as equals. Instead, my brother was killed because of his appearance." The NY Times has an editorial about Lucero's death, noting the anti-immigrant attitude encouraged by Republicans

President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush flew into NYC today for the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum's re-dedication--and also for President Bush to receive the Intrepid Freedom Award. Bush was jovial in his early remarks--he asked Rep. Anthony Weiner if he was ready for the lame-duck session, called Intrepid president Bill White "the Vanna White of the Intrepid" and said, "You know, oftentimes they ask me, what are you going to miss about...

Prayer Booths as Public Art

prayerbooth1108.jpgPublic art is everywhere these days, and Dylan Mortimer’s work may be the most provocative piece in the city at the moment. The NY Post reports that his prayer booths are located by the Roosevelt Island tram in Manhattan, and are meant to "get people talking." The Parks Dept. describes the interactive Public Prayer Booth as a synthesis of a telephone booth and a prayer station, where "the viewer can flip down a kneeler and engage in prayer." The artist, who is from Kansas City and a graduate of SVA, says, “My goal is to spark dialogue about a topic often avoided, and often treated cynically by the contemporary art world."

Well, this is only a few seasons late, but in case you're just catching Cloverfield for the first time on DVD it may seem relevant! The map above was created to tell people "where things in Cloverfield happen okay." Find out just where the monster punted the Statue of Liberty's head from, and much much more. Warning: the descriptions contain a lot of likes, dudes and oh my gods, okay?...

Hillary Clinton Goes Glam(our)

2008_11_hillarm.jpgLast night, Senator Hillary Clinton was feted at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, and joked to the crowd, "I’m grateful to Glamour because they liked my pantsuits, and that was one of the highlights of my presidential campaign." Also honored were actress Nicole Kidman, primatologist Jane Goodall, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Apparently Rice was looking forward to meeting Tyra Banks, a fellow honoree, and told the Daily News, "I want to go back to California, and I want to write a book on foreign policy and a book about my parents. I want to see what I can do to reach out to young people to get them involved and interested in the world and languages. We're a bit insular here in America." Here are some video highlights.

It's Flu Season! Last week, Mayor Bloomberg got his flu shot and the Health Department recommends that "everyone who wants to reduce the risk of influenza should get vaccinated this year." NYPD Drops Controversial Videotaping But Doesn't Tell NYCLU

111108cop.jpgAfter spending thousands of dollars in legal fees trying to stop the NYPD from videotaping political demonstrations, the NYCLU was surprised and angered to learn recently that the police department had already changed its videotaping practices back in April 2007 without telling them. The Times reports that had lawyers known this, they would have dropped the lawsuit, because the NYCLU is okay with the more restrictive rules, which allow videotaping only where there is illegal activity or for crowd control. Now they're demanding that the city reimburse them for legal fees, and also give them a heads up when they make policy changes. The NYPD insists that they notified both the court and the NYCLU, but one of the lawyers tells the Times, "It reminds me of that cartoon where somebody is running at a wall over and over, and suddenly the door opens, and you realize nobody told you there was a door there." Photo cred.

The Red Hook Bicycle Design Master Plan Competition is over! Probably before you even knew it began. The contest was sponsored by the Forum for Urban Design, and they describe it as follows:The design competition has three components: 1. retrofitting a bike garage (or “loft”) at the Smith/9th Street Station, and 2. connecting this elevated train stop to the rest of the neighborhood via dedicated bike lanes and other bike amenities, 3. identifying funding sources...

Shiny New Year's Ball Makes Debut

phpu3QLDVPM.jpgThere's a new New Year's Eve ball in town, and it's bigger and brighter than the one of year's past (12 feet in diameter, 11,875 pounds, and containing 32,000 LED lights and 2,668 pieces of crystal). One Good Morning America viewer, where it was unveiled earlier today (video), tells us that while it can "do patterns (sun, water, rainbow, American flag)"...it's "ugly" and lacking the charm that the old school ball had. However, the Waterford crystal sphere that will ring in 2009 will remain in Times Square year round! Crazy, right? Newsday reports that the ball will also be in place to "celebrate other holidays including Valentine's Day, the Fourth of July and Halloween." It's the seventh one in the 101-year history of the ball drop, and the several million dollar price tag is being taken care of "privately" (according the the ball's publicist!). Now, the big question is, when will we see the 9 riding the subway?

Photograph by AminTorres Now, that the MTA's 2009 budget gap has quadrupled from $300 million to $1.2 billion, the agency is trying to figure out what to do next to close the gap. Regarding likely service cuts, fare hikes and possible layoffs, MTA CEO Elliott Sander said, "The word 'Draconian' is not inappropriate." The Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA's William Henderon said, "One of the scary things is if you look at...

Herpes Lawsuit Drama

2008_11_herpes1.jpgWow, it's like L.A. Law meets Grey's Anatomy! In September, white-shoe lawyer Frederick Tanne sued his estranged wife, claiming she gave him herpes from an affair an accountant. For good measure, Tanne also sued her lover and her father, a doctor who Tanne accused of secretly prescribing herpes medication. But now a lawyer for the wife says his client tested "negative" for Herpes Simplex Virus 2. Tanne, who apparently has herpes, was suing for "pain, suffering, emotional, mental, psychological and physical injuries and loss of enjoyment of life." Plush: Herpes by Giant Microbes

The Hanger Bar was a beloved dive on East Third Street with a pool table, DJ booth and a vintage clothes for sale up front. It closed some months ago, and owners Jay Schneider and Natalka Burian have given the place a serious face lift while keeping the drinking/clothing consumption combo. Bespoke men's suits will now be sold, but even more eye-catching is the antique sewing machine they've turned into a beer tap. For the...

It seems that more and more taxi TV screens are losing the "off" or "mute" button, turning NYC cabs into hell on wheels. Incensed reader (and big band leader) Gregory Moore writes:

I made the very unpleasant discovery this weekend during a $20 cab ride downtown that those hideous backseat televisions are being re-designed so that they can no longer be turned off, muted or have the volume turned down. As I tried to conduct business on my mobile phone, I continued to be barraged with the same horrendous commercials over and over. Please notify your readers to file a complaint with the Taxi and Limousine Commission over this revolting new "innovation".
Moore goes on to rail against other modern abominations like "dungarees" and "intendos," (kidding) and adds that the driver "said people have actually been stiffing him because they're so pissed at this 'innovation.'"...
