Educational Outreach

Impacting Education

VolunteersEducation is a major focus of Lockheed Martin’s community outreach. Fifty percent of our contributions and activities are geared toward strengthening students’ capabilities in math and science.

Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Stevens has stated, “At Lockheed Martin, we know firsthand the importance of educating our young people in math and science. Our future success — and our nation’s technological advantage — depend on a constant supply of highly trained, highly capable technical talent.”

To help address these challenges and strengthen the pipeline, Lockheed Martin provides generous funding to education programs focused on math, science, information technology and engineering. In addition, the Corporation and its employees reach out to organizations and teachers dedicated to improving the quality of education and to enhancing academic performance in math, science, engineering and technology.
By supporting education, Lockheed Martin is encouraging tomorrow’s scientists, inventors and business leaders to explore their creativity and apply their ideas today.

Corporatewide Focus Programs
Lockheed Martin supports several corporatewide focus programs, including:

  • The Space Day Education Initiative — a year-round program founded by Lockheed Martin that excites children about math, science, engineering and technology through hands-on activities and interaction with astronauts and other aerospace professionals.
  • MATHCOUNTS® — a national competition that focuses on math enrichment, coaching and competition to promote middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. From 2006-2008, Lockheed Martin will sponsor the MATHCOUNTS® final competition.
  • K-12 Mentoring — a formal mentoring program in which Lockheed Martin employees nationwide engage students in structured and meaningful mentoring relationships. More than 4,000 students benefit annually, and the program continues to grow.
  • National Engineers Week — a nationwide effort that reaches thousands of schools, businesses and community groups, promoting the importance of an engineering education and motivating youth to consider careers in the field.

Educational Programs in Local Communities
Across the Corporation, Lockheed Martin participates in a wide variety of local education initiatives. Beneficiaries range in age from K-12 students, to college-age students, to teachers. For example:

  • Lockheed Martin in Dallas, Texas, participates in the “In Unity Tutoring Program,” which provides math and science tutoring to at-risk second-and third-grade students at an inner-city school. When In Unity started in 1988, the school’s students had scored last in math and reading among all K-3 students in the Dallas Independent School District. Today, they rank at the top.
  • Lockheed Martin in Houston, Texas, operates a program called “Getting Students Excited About Math and Science,” in which employees talk to students in the classroom. Students write essays about what they learned, and 40 winning essayists are invited to tour the Lockheed Martin site and visit Space Center Houston as guests of Lockheed Martin.
  • Lockheed Martin in Owego, N.Y., sponsors Engineering Shadowing, in which 150 high school sophomores and juniors spend a day with Lockheed Martin engineers. The students keep in touch with the engineers throughout their high school careers.
  • Lockheed Martin in Palmdale, Calif., hosts collegiate student teams from the United States and foreign countries in a heavy-lift, radio-control airplane competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The student teams are evaluated and ranked based on the quality of their written reports, oral presentations and technical design inspections, as well as the flight performance of their aircraft.
  • The Lockheed Martin/University of Central Florida Academy for Mathematics and Science in central Florida is an education/industry/community partnership aimed at improving math, science and technology education in the area. The partnership serves as a model for the state and national educational reforms by providing schools in three counties with teacher-leaders who initiate, implement and sustain math and science reform efforts.
