Educational VolunteersOur Commitment
Lockheed Martin is committed to being a valued community partner, focused on enhancing the quality of life in the communities where we live and work.

Volunteerism

  • Lockheed Martin employees have logged nearly 1.9 million volunteer hours in the community over the past few years.
  • Employees logged more than 720,000 volunteer hours in 2005.
  • In 2005, the Corporation recognized more than 2,100 employees with President George W. Bush’s prestigious Volunteer Service Award. The employees logged more than 100 hours on the Corporation’s Volunteer Web Site the year before.

Philanthropic contributions

  • Lockheed Martin donated more than $20 million to community projects in 2004.
  • Half of the donations were allocated to educational programs, with particular emphasis on initiatives in the areas of math, science, engineering and technology.

Community Relations focus areas
We distinguish our Community Relations efforts by focusing:

  • 50 percent on Education
  • 30 percent on Community Outreach
  • 20 percent on Customer And Constituent Interests.

Education
Focus programs include:

  • The Space Day Education Initiative, which has excited millions of children about math, science, engineering and technology through hands-on activities and interaction with astronauts and other aerospace professionals.
  • MATHCOUNTS®, which promotes middle school mathematics achievement through math enrichment, coaching and competition. In 2006-2008, Lockheed Martin will sponsor the final competition, called the Lockheed Martin MATHCOUNTS National Competition.
  • K-12 Mentoring, which engages students in structured and meaningful mentoring relationships with Lockheed Martin employees.
  • National Engineers Week, which encourages students to consider careers in engineering through hands-on programs in schools and the community.

Community
Community outreach is handled at the local level and includes support for:

  • Homeless shelters
  • Food drives
  • Programs that aid disadvantaged families
  • Programs for children who are ill or have faced a tragedy
  • Medical-research and health-related organizations.

Customer and Constituent Interests
Focus programs include:

  • Lockheed Martin Employees Care, a corporatewide program that provides care packages to U.S military troops overseas through Operation USO Care Package.
  • The Corporation and employees have contributed more than $675,000 to the program.
  • The donations have paid for more than 27,000 care packages.
  • Employees and their families stuffed more than 72,000 packages and 26,000 toiletry kits at “stuffing parties” across the country.
  • About 1,000 employees collectively contributed more than 16,000 volunteer hours at the stuffing parties.
  • “Uniting through Reading,” a Family Literacy Foundation program that enables servicemen and women to read stories aloud on videotape to a child in their family. The tapes are sent home to the children.
