Surveillance, Radar & Fire Control

Between the idea and the achievement, there is one important word: how.

And it is the how that makes all the difference.

Automated Flight Services Stations

See more on how Lockheed Martin is making a difference with Automated Flight Services Stations

Warfighters demand and deserve precise situational awareness to identify threats at long ranges, and superior capability to engage the enemy. At Lockheed Martin, we help put the "precision'' in precision strike. The goal: To equip warfighters with the technology to precisely identify, locate and track threats at long ranges, and engage the enemy.

Lockheed Martin's surveillance and fire control capability includes systems that own the night and shrug at adverse weather. These systems operate in any theater, low-level or high-altitude, in space, on the ground or at sea. In network centric warfare, situational awareness and precision attack are critical elements for warfighter survival. People's lives are depending on our systems.

We provide both platforms and weapons that enable the United States and its allies to strike quickly, precisely and from stand-off ranges, reducing the risk to air crews and minimizing collateral damage on the ground. Delivery systems such as the F-16, F/A-22 and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter are or will be capable of delivering precision weapons such as the Wind Corrected Munitions Dispenser, Low-Cost Autonomous Attack System and the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile. Lockheed Martin has also contributed for more than five decades to the field of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance including the U-2 and SR-71 aircraft. When it counts, Lockheed Martin is there.

Lockheed Martin's surveillance and fire control capabilities include:

Surveillance and Reconnaissance

The situational awareness vital to the warfighter's success depends on sensors in the sky. With a passion for invention, Lockheed Martin has four decades experience integrating the tools of airborne reconnaissance into U.S. and international aircraft. The renowned Lockheed Martin U-2S provides high altitude airborne reconnaissance using state of the art imagery sensors that collect intelligence in all weather and light conditions, enabling the warfighter to download and transmit data in real time via satellite to ground stations located around the world.

The value of Lockheed Martin's airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) systems has been proven as recently as the conflicts in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf. The most advanced open system sensor technology is coupled with the latest in communications, from SATCOM to streaming video.

Maritime borders must be protected from illegal immigration, drug traffic and environmental hazards. Fisheries and other natural resources are in danger of depletion. Cargo and passenger ships need to get to their intended destination safely and on schedule. Ships in distress need to be quickly found and assisted. Commercial and naval ports need protection from terrorist attack. Ships at sea need situational awareness of airborne, surface and undersea threats.

Combining years of experience in advanced sensor technology and platforms, and systems integration, we are providing reliable and cost-effective solutions to better manage vessel traffic, monitor ports and coastlines, protect people and naval, sea- and shore-based assets.

Fixed Wing Systems

For active and passive protection of fighter and transport aircraft, Lockheed Martin designs and builds multimode radars and electro-optical sensors to provide pilots with the situation awareness and fire control capabilities necessary for modern combat engagement.

The systems include capabilities for either air and surface sensing, or both, for true multi-role operation. Interferometer systems offer electronic support measures for long-range detection and tracking of electromagnetic signals from both ground-based and airborne emitters.

To keep pilots safe, the systems offer long-range detection and tracking. The highly capable tracking modes assure locking on and maintaining track during "high g" maneuvers.

Other systems provide detection and warning of missile attack.Leading edge research and development has made Lockheed Martin a world leader in latest generation radar and forward-looking infrared systems that protect friendly forces in combat or engage the enemy with precision.

Rotary Wing Systems

For active and passive protection of attack helicopters, Lockheed Martin designs and builds millimeter wave radars and electro-optical sensors that provide aircrews with the situational awareness and fire control capabilities necessary for modern combat engagement.

The systems include capabilities for either air and surface sensing, or both, for true multi-role operation. Leading edge research and development has made Lockheed Martin a world leader in latest generation radar frequency interferometry, radar and forward-looking infrared systems.

To keep aircrews safe during combat operations, the systems offer long-range detection and tracking. Interferometer systems offer long-range radar detection, tracking and precision location of radar emitters. Automatic target detection, classification, recognition, and attack allow warfighters to engage multiple targets simultaneously.

Radar

Lockheed Martin is a world leader in research, design, development, and manufacture of radar systems. For more than a half-century we have been producing radar and integrated surveillance systems, delivering the world's first solid-state radar in 1976.

Our radar systems are in operation in 38 countries ranging from near the Arctic Circle to the Saudi Arabian desert to the tropics of Brazil. They detect, classify, track and engage distant targets over every terrain imaginable. The modular solid-state, phased-array design provides high performance, improved reliability and ease of maintenance.

Lockheed Martin's ground-based, airborne and shipboard radar systems are used for:

Aegis, the world's premier naval defense system, using the SPY-1 radar, tracks hundreds of targets simultaneously while defending against incoming aircraft, missiles, torpedoes, submarines, and enemy ships. Aegis automatically implements defenses to protect the fleet, countering threats and striking inland targets.

Our tethered aerostats and airships carry radar and other sensors, as well as communications electronics. These long-endurance, airborne vehicles watch over remote border areas detecting unauthorized air, ground, and sea traffic.
