Electronic Records Archive (ERA)

Lockheed Martin is working with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to build a permanent archives system to preserve and manage electronic records created by the federal government.

ERA is the National Archives and Records Administration's strategic initiative to preserve and provide long-term access to uniquely valuable electronic records of the U.S. Government, and to transition government-wide management of the lifecycle of all records into the realm of e-government.

In the fall of 2005, the National Archives and Records Administration selected Lockheed Martin to lead a six-year program to develop and deploy a system to handle the rapidly growing volumes of electronic records in their many formats, as well as to ensure the authenticity of those records, preserve them for the long term, and provide public access while protecting privacy and sensitive information.

The system’s architecture must be flexible enough to accommodate evolving policies and information technologies. While technology has enabled prolific documentation and communication, it has done so with a wide variety of increasingly complex formats that can eventually become obsolete, making their contents difficult or impossible to use. Working with the National Archives and Records Administration, the Lockheed Martin team is delivering an open, flexible solution that will set new standards for scalability, authenticity, persistence and service.
