DWI HnR CEO Gets 15-Day Sentence As Expected

After much speculation that a light sentence was coming, yesterday a Manhattan court finalized the plea bargain deal that will allow George Anderson get out of jail after a sentence of a mere 15 days for the hit-and-run death of Florence Cioffi. Anderson, a Wall Street CEO, was reportedly drunk at the time of the accident, but his blood alcohol levels were not checked until he was in custody hours later. Outside the court room, Cioffi's fiance told reporters, "The arm of the law was not......

Five Stabbed Outside Tribeca Nightclub

2009_02_stabbingmap.jpg Five people out partying in Tribeca last night ended up stabbing victims after a fight broke out outside a nightclub. Three men and two women were stabbed a little after 2 a.m. outside of the Deco Lounge on Brodway in Tribeca. 21 year-old Mario Almedo was arrested on assault and criminal possession of a weapon charges for two of the stabbings, one of a 23-year-old man in the head and one to the neck of a 21-year-old woman. A bouncer at Deco told the News, "It was just a fight. No big deal." All of the victims were taken to St. Vincent's Hospital and expected to survive. The club has a bad reputation with neighbors—one employee at a local bodega told the paper, "Every Friday and Saturday night, they fight."

Paterson's Executive Home Makeover was a Bit More Extreme

2009_02_patersons.jpg In the near-year that Governor Paterson has been residing in the Executive Mansion, his expenditures for the place are up 14% compared with the amount spent over the same period by his predecessor Eliot Spitzer for maintenance, preservation and the day-to-day functioning of the mansion. Since Paterson has been there, his staff has spent just under $62,000 on equipment and furnishings such as furniture, linens and wine glasses. The News points out that the tally even included a $200 toaster. (But it's not any toaster, it browns four slices of bread at once.) The Post says that Paterson officials pointed out that most expenses came before the governor declared a budget crisis and ordered agencies to slash unnecessary spending. The governor came under fire in November when it was revealed that he purchased a $20,000 Turkish rug from a major campaign contributor of Spitzer's.

Piano Man Takes the A Train

Photo taken by hoggardb on flickr This morning we were lucky enough to find this picture taken by hoggardb on flickr at the West 4th Street subway station just yesterday. It makes sense that a piano could find its way onto the ACE platform at that stop due its wheelchair accessible elevator combined with the long ramp down on the 3rd Street side. But the real question is: did he ride the rails with it? If we're not......

SI Tweens Caught Gettin' a Little Captain in 'em Before School

2009_02_dentist.jpg Four middle schoolers on Staten Island are going to be suspended after they were caught drunk at school yesterday. Two boys and two girls drank rum outside a nearby Burger King before heading into Markham Intermediate School in Graniteville. A parent of another classmate told the SI Advance, "My daughter went to the bathroom and she saw them falling all over the place and throwing up on the hallway floor. It looked like they took one girl to the hospital because she fell on her face and busted her lip." A spokeswoman for the DOE questioned New York's allowance of prominent alcohol advertising throughout the city saying, "Really, what it's about is changing the environment youths grow up in." Just last month, Gossip Girl was spotted filming on the island.

Yesterday, longtime Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau announced that he would not seek re-election this fall. The 89-year-old, who was first elected to the position in 1975, told reporters, "Some people are slow to learn. It took me a long time to realize I was getting older... I recently realized I'm 25 years beyond normal retirement age. I decided I would not push my luck any further." Both the Daily News and Post report how his wife Lucinda Franks "repeated some questions for her hard-of-hearing husband." The Post adds that the press conference was "hastily scheduled" after it......

State Sen. Monserrate Puts Onus of Abuse Case on Prosecutor

2009_01_hiramm.jpg Yesterday in court, the lawyer for State Senator Hiram Monserrate, the man accused of smashing a glass on his girlfriend's face, claimed that prosecutor Scott Kessler was distorting the facts over what was merely an accident in order to "incite the court" and as a result should be taken off the case. The judge denied the request and renewed the order of protection barring Monserrate from having any contact from Karla Giraldo, who has maintained that it was just an accident (she refused to cooperate with the authorities). Giraldo tried to speak in court yesterday, but was denied since it was merely a procedural occasion for the order of protection. The judge said, “In essence, what you want me to do is conduct a minitrial here. She can tell the grand jury her side of the story." Queens DA Richard Brown defended Kessler as "a nationally recognized expert in domestic violence prosecutions.” The Times reports that Monserrate, who thinks he is being smeared from many angles, had several dozen supporters in the courtroom yesterday, all wearing purple ribbons.

Harissa Explains it All

The recently opened Absinthe Wine Bar, located at 111 First Avenue, is something of a typical East Village restaurant oddity: the place doesn’t serve absinthe, for starters, and for all the Toulouse-Lautrec opulence the name is meant to evoke, chef Nelson German’s menu features a lot of North African flourishes. All of this has an explanation, however: Absinthe’s restaurateurs Walid Hammami and Rafik Bouzgarrou are both Tunisian. They also operate Angelina Café and Atlas Café, the small, vegan friendly bake sale themed Second Avenue restaurant......

State Police Give Another Go at Finding Garza

2009_02_garza.jpg Today in Orange County, police have resumed the search for Laura Garza, the Brooklyn woman who left a nightclub with a registered sex offender three months ago, never to be seen again. State police will focus once again on trails off of Route 17, including the area where they discovered a piece of carpet that they believe came from the apartment of the man Garza left with, Michael Mele, who police have only named as a "person of interest." Garza's family and friends recently camped outside of Mele's apartment, demanding he provide more answers since being labeled by authorities as "uncooperative." As for the search that will take place today and tomorrow, police say that they have declined offers of assistance from the public due to fears of tainting any evidence and said that they can't make headway into Sullivan County because there is too much snow on the ground. Captain Wayne Olson said the previous searches have turned up evidence but told reporters, "We have submitted a number of items for analysis and we've had some results, and I can't go into specific."

Legislature Works on Deal for $2 Tolls on East River Bridges

Photograph of the Manhattan Bridge by Jake Dobkin NY State Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith voiced his support for $2 tolls on East River and Harlem River bridges, a proposal from Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. However Smith did add, "If reducing the proposed East River Bridges toll results in higher fare increases, fewer service add-ons and layoffs, then it may not achieve the intended goals any toll would have to meet for it to be a prudent option."......

Bronx Cab Accident Leaves Driver Dead, Young Girl Critical

2009_02_livery2.jpg A livery cab driver in the Bronx is dead after an accident that saw him lose control of the vehicle and crash into a minivan with three people inside it. 51-year-old Gregorio Primentel was speeding in his cab across Bruckner Boulevard in Mott Haven when he crossed over the median and hit the van, which carried two adults and one child. The six-year-old girl in the backseat is critical and the two adults in serious condition. Firefighters needed to cut off the roof of the van in order to get the people out. A witness told NY1, "When I reach into the car, the driver was in the back seat facing down, I try to speak to the guy, he was bleeding from his head...Then I went to the van and see three people in the minivan, a little child...she was in the back seat, thank God she was wearing a seat belt, she was in a car seat."

When the NY Times article on how the economy shrunk 6.2% last quarter starts off with, "The economy is spiraling down at an accelerating pace, threatening to undermine the Obama administration’s spending plans..." is it any surprise that over a thousand brides-to-be flocked to the Union Square Filene's Basement to participate in the "Running of the Brides"? The annual event (in NYC; it's held twice a year in Boston) offers wedding gowns—which usually retail for $700 to $10,000—at $249, $499 and $699. Brides generally attend with family or friends to help scope out the gowns. According to......

Meteor Man Marbury Shines with Celtic Pride in Debut

2009_02_stephceltics.jpg Stephon Marbury hadn't played in an NBA game in over a year, but didn't show any signs of rust as he stepped in and immediately contributed during his first game as a Celtic last night in the team's 104-99 victory over the Pacers. Marbury came off the bench and scored 8 points in 13 minutes just hours after the press conference announcing his signing with Boston had been held. Starbury (now pronounced 'STAH-berry') was having such a good night that he didn't even say anything crazy after the game. He told reporters, "It went the way I was praying for it to go...The whole satisfaction of the night for me is that we won." New Coach Doc Rivers said he was surprised and impressed by how good Marbury's timing was after so much time off. When he first entered the game at the end of the first quarter, the Boston crowd gave him a standing ovation. Such a reaction probably isn't as likely Wednesday when he returns to the area to play another team he left with its fair share of headaches, the New Jersey Nets.

Second Hate Crime Murder Suspect Thinks It's No Big Deal

Photo Courtesy AP/William C. Lopez Police Commissioner Ray Kelly released a chilling account of yesterday's police interrogation of Keith Phoenix, the second man arrested this week in the hate crime murder of an Ecuadorian immigrant in Bushwick. While his partner in crime Hakim Scott was reported to have been shaken up by the death of Jose Sucuzhanay when brought in, Phoenix expressed no such remorse. Instead he asked cops, "So I killed someone—that makes me a bad......
