Volunteers

They're Making a Difference

Educational VolunteersLockheed Martin's tradition of volunteerism and community service has long been a cornerstone of the Corporation and its values. Our employees are dedicated volunteers who donate their time and energy to improve the quality of life in the community. In 2005, employees logged over 1 million
hours of volunteer service.

Many nonprofit partners tell Lockheed Martin they couldn’t achieve their goals without the Corporation's volunteer support. For example, the national math competition, MATHCOUNTS®, reaches more than a half-million students through the efforts of its extensive volunteer base, which includes many Lockheed Martin employees.

Our Volunteer Web Site
In 2002, the Corporation created Lockheed Martin Volunteers, an internal Volunteer Web Site that enables us to measure the level of volunteer activity across the Corporation. Based on the numbers, Lockheed Martin knows the volunteer program is growing. There have been 2.3 million volunteer hours logged since January 2002.
The site enables employees to record and track their volunteer efforts. Site administrators can gather statistics in a wide variety of ways — by company or corporatewide, by activity, or by whether the employee’s activity is company-sponsored or being done independently. The information provides a big-picture view of volunteering across Lockheed Martin. It also provides resources that enable employees to locate and respond to volunteer opportunites in their communities.

Volunteer Organizations within Lockheed Martin
Although it is up to each individual to decide whether to volunteer and for what cause, some Lockheed Martin sites boost interest and participation through active volunteer organizations or networks.

Several Lockheed Martin sites have volunteer councils that conduct multiple volunteer activities a year. At corporate headquarters, the volunteer council is managed by employee volunteers who organize 10 to 12 turnkey activities a year in the Washington, D.C., area.

One Lockheed Martin business area with facilities in Arizona, California, Valley Forge (Pa.) and the Washington, D.C., region has established a volunteer network for its employees. The network coordinates volunteer activities ranging from tutoring programs, to collection drives, to fund-raising activities for a wide variety of charities.
Employee volunteers address a broad spectrum of unmet community needs. Volunteer organizations make it easier for employees to volunteer, because the organizations identify the opportunities and make initial arrangements that simplify the commitment for the volunteer.

Recognizing Employees’ Volunteer Efforts
Lockheed Martin recognizes its employees for their volunteer efforts. The Corporation formally recognizes employees who log more than 100 volunteer hours on the Volunteer Web Site by giving them President Bush’s prestigious Volunteer Service Award. In addition, all employees who record hours on the site receive a Certificate of Appreciation for their work in the community. Lockheed Martin companies across the country also recognize employees’ volunteer efforts in various ways.
