St. Mary's River Project - Education
The St. Mary's River Project - Education is an organization dedicated to educating children about our environment, particularly the St. Mary's River and the Chesapeake Bay. S.M.R.P. - Education's goal is to raise awareness in the children who we teach of the care we must show to our environment. This organization is run through St. Mary's College of Maryland. Every semester, nearly fifty volunteers from the college join forces to teach approximately six fifth grade classes in St. Mary's county. Once a week, teaching teams go into the classroom and spend an hour on one of ten different lessons. Once a semester, the fifth graders have the opportunity to go on a field trip to the college, where S.M.R.P. - Education takes them around greenhouses, wet labs and a series of other events and locations to give them hands on opportunities. S.M.R.P. - Education not only helps educate the students, but the teachers as well. It is a mutually beneficial program in which everyone has fun.
