It's a new dawn, a new day, a new year, and a new decade (and any wiseacre who quips that the 'Teens' don't really begin until 2011 can go to the back of the class). Happy New Year, folks -- let's hope it's a good one, without any fear. Here's some pics of last night's firework fun, and the New Year's Day Parade today, rendered ass-backwards to please our North American amigos.

Despite the "disgraceful" decision by "Scrooge Boris" (© all Labour bloggers / activists) to shorten the display by two minutes for a £70,000 saving, the fireworks last night were pretty spectacular, and a distinct improvement from the drab display we got in 1999 (memories of the disappointing 'River of Fire' have yet to fade). 200,000 people thronged the Thames last night to get a glimpse, while today's parade drew up to half a million.

As reported earlier in the month, the decision by TfL not to subsidise free rail travel last night meant that people using mainline services would have been subject to the standard fare; however, according to Standard blogger Paul Waugh, the Train Operating Companies had "no intention" of trying to sell tickets, wisely reasoning that a few hours' of lost fares would be cheaper than facing up to umpteen lost manhours through staff attacked by aggressive drunk revellers. Anybody have any experience of being charged (or not) on a train in the wee hours of this morning?

Time To Get A Travelcard: Fares Go Up Tomorrow

If you don't want to be immediately hit by the Mayor's fare hikes then get down your Oyster Point pronto - fare increases kick in tomorrow. O2 Boss Blames iPhone For Crappy Coverage

In a rare example of corporate confession, the director of phone company O2 has admitted that the service provided to London has been shoddy in recent months.

As you read this the recession might well be over, Londonist takes stock of the damage the 2008-09 recession has done to our city.

The Yuletide and New Year period is a traditional time for newspaper folk to kick back and regurgitate some of the most interesting, controversial, or just plain memorable content from the past twelve months into a year-end best-of feature. In that solipsistic spirit, may we present a selection of our most popular posts from 2009:

Lions of London #7

London has the largest litter of lions in the world. A magnificent pride their history goes back 120,000 years. There are colossal, legendary and living lions. Lions from one of the seven wonders of the world, from the cradle of liberty and there's a lion on the very first coin. Appearing on the greatest historical treasures, living in masterpieces of art lions are roaring on the capital's biggest tourist attractions. London is leonine.

London Freecycle Is Dead! Long Live Freecycle!

London Freecycle, the online forum for Londoners to pass on unwanted or unneeded items to others who can use them, will be no more come the new year. The gargantuan, London-wide, eco-friendly beast is being killed off to be replaced by the many-headed hydra of borough-specific freecycle and freegle groups.

Study The History Of the Human Body @ Wellcome

Considering some learning for self improvement amongst those new year's resolutions? If the Medicine Man galleries at Wellcome Collection enthral you this could be right up your street: an 11 week course on the history of the human body in Europe using artefacts from the Collection along the way.

Crime & Punishment In A Mayfair Squat

Perfectly in tune with the austerity and chill of January after the lush indigestion of an all consuming Christmas, a site specific theatre company are presenting a new stage adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's classic novel, "Crime and Punishment" at the Oubliette Collective Mayfair Squat - the former offices of the Readers' Digest - between 2-5 January.

Oyez, Oyez: London's Town Crier Dies

petermoore.jpg Sad news: Peter Moore, town crier to the City, Westminster, Southwark, GLA and Mayor and basically de facto town crier of the whole of London, died at his home in Wandsworth on 20 December. He'd been in the job for over 30 years and was due to receive a lifetime achievement award during the New Year's Day parade. His ruddy face and loud, trademark call of "Oyez, oyez" will be much missed around the streets and landmarks of the capital.

North London Power Failures

plug.jpg North London really isn't having fun when it comes to Christmas power. In addition to the 1,000 homes in East Barnet who lost gas (and later, electricity) on 20 December - around 100 of which are still cut off - 2,715 homes in West Finchley lost electricity this morning. Half were back on within a few hours, but the rest are still waiting. Given Londonist's own experiences with EDF during this bloody chilly spell - our street had two power cuts last Monday - we wish West Finchleans the best of British and add 'basic utilities' to the list of things that take forever to sort out when the weather gets bad. And so, finally, to Southwark, where one of Europe's tallest buildings is beginning to rise. The Shard may not be more than a handful of steel beams at this stage, but it's already a firm fixture in the London psyche. The tower was first mooted by architect Renzo Piano almost a decade ago. After years of planning and funding difficulties, the Shard has now begun its ponderous climb, which will see it reach up to 310 metres - a height that will not only make it the tallest building in London but also the loftiest in the European Union.
