Note from the Publisher: Welcome Katharine Patricia Chung Wilkins!

Jen Chung would be putting up this post, but she's been away from her keyboard today having a baby! Katharine Patricia Chung Wilkins was born at 2:38 pm on January 3, 2010— stats so far: 7 pounds, 1.2 ounces. Surprisingly, the baby does not resemble the projection that the Gothamist graphics staff created earlier this month. Jen writes: "Fun facts: Exactly two weeks early; had umbilical cord wrapped around her body twice; Chung is her second middle name; seems to endure my off-key singing." In related news, Jake will be taking over as Executive Editor of Gothamist for the...

Mixed Reviews For J.Lo

Jennifer Lopez showed off her assets in a sparkly, catsuit during a Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve performance, but did it get the reaction she wanted? The Daily News spoke to some people and their opinions including, "Wow! I think she looks good after having twins!", "She looks stunning," and "There's too many wrinkles. It looks like elephant skin." And some worried that her butt looked smaller than at her peak! So, in the end, it's probably what J.Lo wanted all along—to be talked about....

Nine-Year-Old Stabbed To Death Over Video Game

Nine-Year-Old Stabbed To Death Over Video Game

The nine-year-old New Jersey boy who was stabbed and killed in a Harlem housing project on Saturday was murdered over a video game, according to the Daily News. Fourth grade student Anthony Maldonado was spending the weekend with his uncle in the General Grant Houses when 25-year-old Alejandro Morales — one of his uncle's roommates — plunged a knife into the boy's chest after an altercation involving a Tony Hawk skateboarding video game, according to police. Morales allegedly stabbed Maldonado at around 3:30 am, after two of Morales' brothers who also live in the apartment left to get food....

Paternalism Big in 2010

Death and taxes are still a certainty in 2010. And cigarettes remain a source of both! Back in October, the District raised tobacco and gas taxes -- increases that went into effect yesterday. With the uptick in the price for a pack, the District now stands as one of the most expensive places in the U.S. to smoke. According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the $2.50 per pack excise is the eighth highest in the nation. Drivers will take a hit, too: The gas tax has gone up as well. Smokers and drivers really do ruin it for everyone,...

Embattled Newsman Dom Carter Is Sad

Embattled Newsman Dom Carter Is Sad

In his first interview since being convicted of attempted assault for beating, choking, and kicking his wife, former NY1 political anchor Dom Carter told the Post about how depressed he has been. "I don't set the alarm anymore," he told the tabloid over a breakfast of bacon, Egg Beaters, and wheat toast at a diner near his Rockland County residence. "I wake up. I sit around the house. I read the papers, watch a movie. Sometimes I cry a lot, but I try not to do it around my kids ... I've had time to reflect on my life...

Food Truck Lot to Debut Tomorrow in Santa Monica*

The <a href="http://twitter.com/SMFoodtrucklot">Santa Monica Food Truck Lot</a> (so far) has only issued one Tweet: "Get ready for a new place to eat in Santa Monica," they <a href="http://twitter.com/SMFoodtrucklot/status/7248616471">declared on the last day of 2009</a>. And then over the weekend, <a href="http://twitter.com/BarbiesQ/status/7322522354">Barbie's Q revealed</a> that this endeavor was due to launch on Monday, and that they and about a half-dozen food trucks were slated to be part of it. Winds of Change Blowing Through D.C.

Winds of Change Blowing Through D.C.

Photo by PGCist The news today is as cheery as the weather is dreadful. These Zephyrian blasts that are pushing you and me around as we try to cross the District's long avenues? They are blowing in resumes, signing bonuses, and real estate speculators! The Washington Post reports that Deloitte, which has a new headquarters in the old (current?) Corporative Executive Board in Rosslyn, has issued a quarterly survey of U.S. employers. Their findings are upbeat. A huge boom in federal hiring is predicted for the New Year. Deloitte also says that the timing may be right to leave...

Aren't You Glad You Didn't Go to the LateNightShots NYE Party?

Aren

Photo by kimberlyfaye We've been entertaining ourselves this morning by reading through the surprising number of emails we received over the past several days letting us know about the epic failure that apparently was the New Year's Eve party hosted by LateNightShots dudes Fritz Brogan and Reed Landry. It's not at all surprising, mind you, that this particular party, formally dubbed "New Year's Eve at the National Building Museum," was a huge flop. Rather, we're surprised by the number of folks who wrote in to DCist about it, as though this is something we'd be shocked by. Don't get...

Health Department On How To Shoot Heroin

Health Department On How To Shoot Heroin

Hey taxpayers, we just spent $32,000 on a Department of Health designed Heroin guidebook, complete with helpful illustrations! Just think of all the smack we could have gotten with that money. 70,000 copies of the 16-page pamphlet were printed out, and it's unsurprisingly garnering criticisms from just about everyone. The tip sheet tells heroin users how to prepare and inject the drugs in a safe manner that can help addicts avoid infection. According to 1010Wins, DEA Special Agent-In-Charge John Gilbride says the handout is "very disturbing" and described it as "a step-by-step instruction on how to inject a poison"...

Rikers Guard Busted For Selling Drugs And Booze To Inmates

Rikers Guard Busted For Selling Drugs And Booze To Inmates

It's been a particularly rough week for guards at Rikers Island. In the past few days, corrections officers have been accused of sleeping on the job and possibly sleeping with inmates. Now a Rikers Island guard has been busted trying to smuggle drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes to prisoners in exchange for cash, according to the Post. Teneya Griffith, 25, was arrested for trying to sneak three "zip" sandwich bags holding 2 ounces of marijuana, three water bottles filled with vodka, tobacco, and a few cigarettes into the prison on Thursday. "When they handcuffed her and escorted her out of...
