Stung By Close Loss, More Election Finger-Pointing From Dems

2009_11_thompobama.jpg The oh-so-close mayoral race continues to be thorn in many Democrats' side—and many are bitter. State Senator Eric Schneiderman (D-Manhattan) tells the NY Times, “Bill Thompson was always closer than people thought, and on our side, if people had been behind him more, there would have been more checks, more endorsements, more attention, and that might have made the difference. It really is disgraceful that a lot of people in the Democratic Party stayed home or kept their checkbooks closed."

Barbara Fife, deputy mayor under David Dinkins, referred directly to President Obama, noting his lack of direct help (Obama made three, ultimately futile, trips to support defeated NJ Governor Corzine), "He made people feel this was not winnable; Bill got lumped in with Paterson in many minds. Obama had lists he could have given, and support. But he never said boo."

An "Obama insider" told the Daily News, "It was a sleeper race. No one thought it was going to be a close race, especially Bloomberg... There is an argument to be made that a lot of Bloomberg's voters stayed home because they didn't think it was close." But the insider admitted, "[Bloomberg's] an ally, so I'm not sure we would have spent the political capital. Obama didn't even put out a statement endorsing [Thompson]. That tells you how we feel about Bloomberg."

Maybe people stayed home because you didnt make a compelling enough case for people to get out and vote. And Corzine was his own worst enemy. The man just wasn't liked, and no amount of star power could have saved him, not even Obama.

Thompson did a good job as Comptroller these pass 8 years without any scandals such as slush funds, mobsters in his payroll or any sexual discrimination suit as Bloomberg. Thompson lost because Democrats sold out for their OWN self-interest. Many people stayed home because they don't Thompson had no chance since he was overspend by Bloomberg and so called Democrats SOLD out to Bloomberg. We need to make sure Christine Quinn isn't speaker again next year. Citizen Union, UFT and all those other groups sold OUT!!!!

bloomberg needs the obama administration more than the obama administration needs bloomberg.
so obama stop kowtowing to bloomberg, he never had anything positive to say about the President and could care less about him. all I have heard from bloomberg is that he'll work with the President yada yada yada.
what political capital does bloomberg really have?? seriously? what?
I will remember for many elections going forward who sided with bloomberg. Time for more housecleaning.

Yeah, whatever their "reasons," the people who stayed home have no grounds to complain now.

I made the effort to vote so I CAN complain and will: The Dems gave us a very weak candidate against the all-mighty rich-as-fuck Bloomberg. That was a real shame and it's on them, the Democratic so-called leadership in this city!

How was Thompson weak??? It is the new media that keeps stating that he is weak and that he was no contender for Bloomberg. In fact Thompson was strong and ran against Bloomberg. Thompson stayed 2 terms as comptroller as the people voted for. Media states Thompson had no specific plan, neither did Bloomberg. All he did was attack Thompson. People are sheep. I heard them repeating Bloomberg's campaign manager spin that Bloomberg did poorly because of the recession. But wasn't Bloomberg's argument to extend his own term because of the recession??? Bloomberg gets a free pass to lie and NO ONE IN THE MEDIA CALLS HIM OUT. That is why Thompson lost. Bloomberg has the MEDIA in his pocket.

thompson didn't invest any pension funds in the Stuy Town/Peter Cooper village deal like Calif.
he's plenty competent, he went to Tufts, and was elected twice as the city's comptroller.
bloomberg has no plan except to raise fines and fees and now taxes when the city can't afford the Union deals that were made when the city had "money", you know the "money" that cause the meltdown.

He didn't put up much of a fight, that's how he was weak. I'm sure he's smart enough and a very nice man. But being passively on the ballot and running a real campaign for office are two different things.

it's all over. i repeat. it's all over.

I am afraid it has only just begun.

Third terms are a curse in this town. I'm native - Bronx Born, Queens raised and now living in Brooklyn and I can't remember one pol that managed it successfully. But I do remember those that went down in flames - Koch, Cuomo ... Mostly because by the time they got to running for a third term, their arrogance overwhelms their former decent traits and they are unable to relate to 75% of the population who go to work each day via mass transit or a chevy. They become insulated and removed from the day to day. Their decisions favor those around them and the populace becomes increasingly frustrated. Knives and blood follow. Unless Mike keeps paying off the press, they will be looking to help the next Mayor in waiting. And the papers will sell when it all goes down.

Watch for DeBlasio and Liu to pick away at the divide. It will be slow at first - but they are hungry and see an opening. This will not be an easy time for Mike and my bet is within a year, all of the cracks in his administration, the bribery, the payoffs and the corruption will show. Knives and blood will follow and it will be ugly. The city is in trouble financially - and cuts to social services and agencies are in the works. His friends on wall street and in real estate have their own issues and Obama won't be fooled twice - there will be no one to protect or enable him any more.

Believe me - it's not what I want for New York - but all I need to do is take one look at the two thugs guarding him at that rest. to know Mayor Mike is on his way.

very informative perspective. i appreciate your taking the time to write this and look forward to observing (most of) the scenario you describe. bloomberg was born arrogant, continues to openly seethe arrogance in speech and policy and it will be nice to see him go down in flames.

they are all the same: republicrats. obama sucks & i voted for the guy.

We needed a true independent candidate who actually represents the working class not the CEOs and the elite. Too bad that probably will not happen.

“Bill Thompson was always closer than people thought, and on our side, if people had been behind him more, there would have been more checks, more endorsements, more attention, and that might have made the difference. It really is disgraceful that a lot of people in the Democratic Party stayed home or kept their checkbooks closed."

Oh the presumptuousness. Reminds me of Gore voters complaining that Nader voters didn't vote for THEIR GUY. I stayed home on Tuesday and have no regrets. The Dems gave me a weak candidate and I couldn't endorse Bloomy again. The rest of the choices were weaker.
