Fox, Time Warner Nail Down a Deal

fox-time-warner-cable-deal.jpeg Looks like Fox programming won't go to the wayside. Time Warner's Director of Digital Communication, @jeffTWC on Twitter tweeted: "Attn Time Warner Cable customers: We have a deal with Fox. Your programming is safe. Please RT" Fox programming was supposed to be cut for Time Warner Cable customers at midnight last night, but the two companies extended talks. At issue was that Fox wanted more money per subscriber.

A New Dawn for Sports

Everywhere you go, there’s a hell of a lot of sentimentality going on. Best of 2009 lists, best of the decade lists despite the fact that the decade doesn’t end until this year. It’s just a bunch of mushy nostalgia served to cheapen the events that actually happened. As Thom Yorke crooned on “Let Down” on OK Computer, “Don’t get sentimental it always ends up drivel.”

DJ Bonebrake (X), Jack Skelly (Lawndale) and Dark Bob have created this fantastic new year's video to usher in 2010! It seems to be the year when everyone spontaneously regrows their hair. This happy, Beatle-esque video employs 80's graphics because the the 80's were superfun! Jack promises, " this song...would be perfect for all music and laughter-loving Angelenos!!!"

Extra, Extra

At the stroke of 9 p.m.--that's midnight East Coast time for those watching on ESPN where this stunt will air--motocross superstar Travis Pastrana will attempt the longest jump in a rally car, from the Pine Street Pier onto a barge anchored in the harbor in Long Beach. He'll need to fly 230 feet over open water to do it and beat the current record of 171 feet, according to the Long Beach Press Telegram.

What's Going on Here, West LA Christian Center?

This photo was apparently taken near Venice Blvd. and Overland Avenue at the West Los Angeles Christian Center. Those are definitely strong words to make you think while driving.

TV Junkie: New Year's Eve Specials, FOX vs. Time Warner

Will FOX pull the plug for Time Warner customers come midnight tonight? It looks like it so far! In other news, here are some New Year's Eve specials for your viewing pleasure tonight, listed by LAist's TV Editor Tom Lewis in his column on Monday:

As mentioned earlier this month, pornstar-directors Belladonna and Kimberly Kane organized the "Winter Wonderland" fundraiser, benefiting the besieged Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation, at Busbys East.

Cellphone Service on L.A.'s Subway System?

cellphoneservicemetro.jpg Looks like Metro is beginning to the explore the possibility for that. It started in September when a member of the public requested such a service, which was followed up by up Metro's chairperson. Now that some security concerns have been addressed, the transit agency is taking the necessary steps to see this through. It's pretty loud down there when the train is in motion, but this will be nice for texting.

New Year's Eve Reminders: All-Night Train Service, DUI Checkpoints, Freeway Closures

If you're going out tonight, here are some logistics you might want to consider:

LAPD Deems Suicide in Northridge Metrolink Incident

metrolink-suicide.jpg LAPD officials announced today that yesterday's incident in which a Metrolink train killed a man on the tracks was suicide. "Detectives say the man laid down on his stomach in front of a west bound Metrolink train near Balboa and Roscoe Boulevards around 1:50 p.m.," said an advisory. No one else was hurt in the incident. The man's identity is being withheld until a family member is notified.

Recession Obsession Eye Nosh: Old School Pie

LAist is a big fan of Philippe's The Original. The restaurant has been in Los Angeles for so long that you can French Dip Like It's 1909 (and don't forget their breakfast.) For $2-$3 a slice, you can have a generous piece of one of their many pies. They seem to have about a dozen different fruit and cream pies, each looking up at you longingly from below the glass. Need something more? Wash it down with a beverage. Most are under a buck. Philippe's is easily accessible on the Metro too.

Food Experts Predict Food Truck Deathwatch in 2010

food-truck-death-watch.jpgEater LA this week asked a panel of local food industry types a series of questions, one of them being "What are the headline predictions for 2010?" Three of them referred to the all-of-the-sudden-popular fancy food trucks as a dying breed. "Truck Plunge!" exclaimed Pulitzer Prize winner and LA Weekly's Jonathan Gold. Lesley Bargar Suter of Los Angeles Magazine predicted "Flat Tire for Food Trucks." And Jeff Miller of Thrillist said "Deathwatch: Food Trucks." If true, who do you think will go first?
