LA Lakers defeat Indiana Pacers 118-96. Things looked dicey for the champs on their Grammy tour in the first half. The Pacers came out with a small lineup and really pushed the tempo. Either that or the Lakers were feeling a bit sluggish after their dismantling of the Washington Wizards the previous night. Either way they went into the locker room at half time with only a three point advantage. But the boys woke up in the second half with a huge dose of Andrew Bynum. Bynum scored 27 points while grabbing 12 boards. Even Kobe Bryant who had 29 points seemed to defer to Bynum at times. Pau Gasol added 21 points and 13 rebounds while Lamar Odom rounded out with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The Lakers now head over to Philly on Friday for a warmup to their mondo mega death match against the Boston Celtics.

New Jersey Nets defeat LA Clippers 103-87. I don’t know what was a bigger mess to watch: this game, Obama’s state of the union address or the Republican’s response to the SOTU. Mind you this is a Clippers team that beat the Lakers and Celtics and were a Baron Davis jumper from beating the Cavaliers. Everyone figured the Clippers would have to win this one especially with Devin Harris and Courtney Lee out of the lineup with injuries. But in front of a crowd of 9,220 the Clippers put out a lackadaisical effort allowing the Nets to be the aggressor the whole time. Chris Kaman had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Eric Gordon added 12 points and seven rebounds in his first game back from missing three games with a sprained big toe. But Baron Davis was remarkably absent throughout the proceedings. They now lick their wounds and head up to Minnesota.

Washington Capitals defeat Anaheim Ducks 5-1. Well this was what most people expected from the best team in the NHL and the best player in the NHL. Seemingly toying with the Ducks for two periods, the Caps broke the 1-1 tie in the third period in stunning fashion. Shaone Morrisonn, Mike Knuble and Alexander Semin scored on consecutive shots in a 2 ½ minute span to put the game away early in the third period. Alexander Ovechkin scored a goal in the opening minute of the game and assisted on Knuble’s goal in the third period. Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastian Giguere had to endure 49 shots from the Caps.

The proposal to increase speed limits on two Valley streets was stalled by the City Council's Transportation committee this afternoon after concerns were brought up by the public and politicians alike. "I've got serious concerns with moving this forward," stated Councilman Paul Koretz, whose district includes the two streets in question, Riverside Drive and Chandler Boulevard, which could be raised to 40 and 45 miles per hour, respectively. more ›

As long as he steers clear of movies with numbers for titles, John Cusack's all right with me. Sunday, the New Bev pairs Cusack classic High Fidelity with (500) Days of Summer, both in Scenesteround Sound! The Aero continues the Cusack attack with Better Off Dead, featuring a live commentary from writer-director "Savage" Steve Holland & cast-members Curtis Armstrong, Diane Franklin & E. G. Daily. Considering their work in the 25 years since, it should make for an animated discussion. more ›

LA-based band The Soft Pack are hitting the road on Saturday--the roads of Los Angeles, that is. The San Diego-transplants (formerly known as The Muslims) will play 10 consecutive shows marathon-style all across town in an event that has them partnered with the FYF Fest and riding in a veggie-oil fueled 1992 Blue Bird school bus. The band is inviting fans to follow along all day or hit up spots wherever they can; while some of the locations have been announced some are still top secret, so you can follow the band via Twitter the day-of to see where their next stop is. more ›

LAPD Yanks 24-Hour Work Permit from Expo Train Line

expo-line-delayed2.jpg For an already delayed project, this can't be good. The Los Angeles Police Commission has revoked a permit allowing the Expo Line Construction Authority to work on the rail line 24 hours a day, seven days a week, citing noise that is impacting neighborhood's quality of life. Via the LA Times: "Richard Thorpe, chief executive of the Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority, the organization tasked with building the line, said the 24-hour permit was important to speed up the project. If the construction authority doesn’t have such a permit, Thorpe said, contractors would be forced to shut down some streets and intersections during the day when there is generally heavy traffic."

Yesterday we noted a Variety article that printed viewership numbers for last Friday's premiere of Starz' "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" and stated that the show didn't perform as well as peer network premieres. more ›

Los Angeles could be seeing some neighborhoods with bicycle rental kiosks in the near future, perhaps Hollywood, Koreatown, downtown and around the USC campus. For over a year, the City Council has been interested in exploring bicycle sharing programs that have been seen in Paris, Montreal, Washington D.C. and in Denver at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. more ›

It was just days after a massive earthquake devastated Haiti that local restaurateur and Haitian TiGeorges LaGuerre held a fundraiser at his Echo Park chicken eatery, and in the days and weeks after many other Los Angeles restaurants have followed suit. While last weekend food truck enthusiasts had their pick of ways to eat and donate thanks to a 25-truck gathering at the TLofts in West L.A., this weekend and next there are plenty more opportunities to dine out for a cause. more ›

As the gay marriage debate continues in the courts and within communities, a newly introduced bill by State Senator Mark Leno may win over church leaders who are opposed to same-sex unions. The Civil Marriage Religious Freedom Act, SB 906, will affirm that no clergy member will be forced under law to perform any civil marriage that is against his or her belief system. “While we know religious freedom is protected under our Constitution, this legislation eliminates any confusion or doubt under state law, reaffirming that no member of clergy or church will be penalized for refusing to solemnize marriages that violate their religious tenets,” Leno said. more ›

L.A. City Council Takes a Step to End the 'Culture of the Car'

bicycle-anti-harassment.jpg "The culture of the car is going to end now!" exclaimed Councilman Bill Rosendahl at today's City Council meeting about his ordinance to protect cyclists from harassment on the streets of Los Angeles. "The purpose of this ordinance is to protect cyclists in a way that they haven't been protected before. The LAPD hasn't been part of the solution, but sometimes has been part of the problem... By end of March, I want an ordinance that has teeth in it." And with an unanimous vote, the move to continue developing the ordinance was approved. LAPD Chief Charlie Beck is scheduled to meet with cyclists at a Transportation Committee meeting on February 24th.

Tonight the Elected bassist Michael Runion will be headlining the Bootleg Theater with none other than the Like front woman Z Berg and Rilo Kiley drummer/singer-songwriter Jason Boesel. LA-bred pop singer-songwriter Lucy Schwartz is poised to ring in her latest EP, 2010's Help Me! Help Me! at the Hotel Café. And, lastly, Silver Lake's own all-female quintet Kissing Cousins will be gracing Echo Curio. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Troubadour to catch Los Feliz-bred Top 40 maestros the Airborne Toxic Event. LAist favorites Santa Ana-based indie rockers Aushua are slated to kick things off. more ›
