Philahealthia recently tried out the latest Nintendo Wii game from Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaels: Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2010.

Yesterday, a man accused of raping and assaulting a girl from his neighborhood for eight years was ordered to stand trial for his alleged crimes. The man, Tyrone Wiggins, was a cop. And a karate instructor at an Olney community center. The girl, who was ten years old when the abuse began, grew up, became a police officer herself and spoke out to the Internal Affairs Bureau. They took two years to investigate Wiggins, allowed him to retire, and then charged him the next day.

Okay. So he didn't ambush me in blue face paint, tape my eyes open and force me to watch the death of the gods. But that's like what happened in my brain. Mel Gibson is trying to kill me.

"A cross between quaaludes, Enya, and bad therapy." That's how my screening guest, Phillyist Leigh, described The Lovely Bones as we exited the theater post-haste once the credits were rolling. (And when I say "post-haste," I mean there was probably cartoon-like smoke coming off our shoes.)

Oft-time Photoist contributor moocatmoocat found this gem at Reading Terminal market, and writes: "Probably good for getting rid of vampires!" Sounds good to us.

Usually when Uwishunu puts out an all points sale bulletin we casually mark it in google reader with best of intentions, but never actually make it out to said discount retail event. Well this time when our compadre blog shouted out about a $5 for EVERYTHING, pre-remodeling sale at Sazz Vintage, we promptly cleared our Thursday lunch-hour and scheduled a quick trip to Olde City. (A word for the wise: Lunchtime raids are not recommended for amateurs. Unless you have a black belt in vintage shopping and can sweep a store in 20 minutes or less, go after work.)

CinePhillyist industry tip of the week: If you've got a red-headed actress who looks good in green, starring in a movie that's set in Ireland, and that movie's not very good, for gods sakes release it on St. Patrick's Day. That way it's thematically attuned to the weekend. A stunt release like that may not have helped Leap Year in the long run, but at least it's a marketing strategy that would have made sense. In case you were wondering, the Amy Adams flick predictably got smashed at the box office by 4 movies that were released weeks ago and one about vampires. Moving on...

  • Pennsylvania will receive $68.8 million and New Jersey will receive $46.98 million in federal Recovery Act funds. This money is to be used to turn vacant homes into affordable housing.
  • This year is a bit of a milestone for one of the first big performers to hit Philadelphia so far this year. 2010 marks the thirtieth year that Gordon Gano has been strumming his guitar (or banjo, or violin) and writing quirky heartfelt lyrics as the frontman for nerd-angst legends, Violent Femmes. Though the Femmes are no longer playing together, their need for American music, big hands and a person to talk to will live on in the hearts of millions.

Ounsworth is touring in support of his solo effort, Mo Beauty, which was released on October 20, 2009, on Anti Records. He recorded the album in New Orleans and was aided by producer Steve Berlin (of Los Lobos fame). New Orleans musicians including Stanton Moore, George Porter Jr., Matt Sutton & Robert Walter appear on the record along with Ounsworth.
